If you have depression, did atheism contribute to it?
jacpod comments on Jul 30, 2018:
No I have always been an atheist never been a theist - depression is something that hits everyone at some point. I think I had to sort of 'get ' the world and how it works - Yes people let you down they die they dont keep their promises etc.etc. and we learn how to cope in such a world as this is all there is. I think truly getting a life is when you achieve some measure of self confidence and build on that get stronger 9not harder ) just stronger enough to take the knocks because it is all so random. One day you have a dog the next day not - you learn to grieve and so it goes ... you learn all the time how to deal with living.
So I've been here on this site for about a week now.

My parents made on e a long time ago by digging out the shape you use a rope and decide where the slopes will be then take out the rocks and save the big ones for the fish to cool themselves under put in sand and make that smooth, then a thick concrete mix on top when its dry you need it to cure in the sun for quite some time tehn again with water in it my parents made a little wooden bridge across theirs again to give the fish more shade and also to be able to get nearer to them

jacpod comments on Jul 29, 2018:
sometimes they seem to be conforting enough to live with as you know that the person giving you one is really probably doing their best to help and thats ok in itself -and some problems are pretty much unfixable so a platitude might just work - It doesnt really bother me recieving them as Iknow the person is trying their best and not fobbing me off they usually just dont know what to say.
So what is your favorite Sunday morning routine with your coffee?
jacpod comments on Jul 29, 2018:
My friend and I meet up every morning to do the pub quiz in the newspaper, we have coffee and biscuits together and just have a riotous time laughing ,we both live in the same sheltered accomodation scheme so the routine is about 8-30 a.m each day - Its usually Ok but sometimes th cleaners want to get in on our fun - time and they usually turn the convo into some version of 'isnt it awful!' so we have to find ways to get rid of them
I think it's so brave of people in the last years of their lives to remain atheistic.
jacpod comments on Jul 29, 2018:

jacpod comments on Jul 29, 2018:
The International sign of co-operation is a rainbow flag, because it contains all the colours of all the flags of all nations - I have one outside my door - (not on a flagpole). It started in Rochdale because the workers were given flour adulterated with talc so they formed the Rochdale Pioneers and set up their own shop in Toad lane to supply good healthy food and demand better wages. Also no one with money can order a rainbow they are for us all and cone and go with weather changes nothing to do with us. But its a real pleasure to see a double rainbow!

What moral code do you follow now that you are non-religious?
jacpod comments on Jul 28, 2018:
I have always been non religious and I follow my own codes which change at my whim according to what is goign down - there was a book called the water babies (not a great read - religious connotations all teh way through ) There was a character called 'Mrs Do as you would be done by!' and I rather liked that .Basically I live and let live and if I am totally peed off by anybody I let them know ; and if they are insufferable I blank them - If I have friends they are people I can have a really good laugh with.

Does aggressive antitheism beget anti-atheism?
jacpod comments on Jul 28, 2018:
I don't know I am slightly conflicted by this as i feel all views are valid and that saying some are worse than others is limiting our capacity to make our own judgements - i seriously only care about my own thoughts; and so what if there are backlashes! this is what discussion and self-will is for - we are doing it here, right now & just because i dont agreee with you doesn't mean that I will not defend your right to say it
How many of you live in the moment as much as possible?
jacpod comments on Jul 28, 2018:
I don't wan to sound weird but I don't think I have the capacity not to do that - Its possibly because I have D.I.D - I don't know but I just seem to live seamlessly without thought - I get immersed in what I am doing and that is all there is, like just picking out weeds or watering and my head doesn't seem to run around needing entertainment - I have friends who are the opposite so I understand and not sure which of us is luckier
It has been discussed, and I wonder if people understand what love is, even from other species.
jacpod comments on Jul 28, 2018:
I have always held that love is the absence of fear - fear is a big 'stopper' love seems a big 'go-for- it! there was a set of short stories by some philosopher whose name I cannot remember one of them was a man was going to jump off tower bridge and a policeman saw it and knew if he tried to save him he too might perish but in the moment of weighing up he realised that this would endanger his whole sense of himself and his humanity - -they both survived.

Do you have religious friends?
jacpod comments on Jul 27, 2018:
yes - yes ; they know I'm a heathen (in their terms)- I was on a counselling course with a vicar two priests a deaconess and a nun and some ordinary people - I handle it by treating everyone just normally and tuning out or even leaving to do other work if if it gets seriously goddy. The nun on my course never revealed herself as such and she was Irish; one day we had a huge set-to and she told me to feck -off which is Irish for the English version - I laughed myself silly when it came out that she was a nun.

For me it s not a question of being convinced as if there were a argument going on somewhere - There is only this here and now and - I never had a god I have never ever felt a need for a a god and for the full 70 years of my life i have been without a god - It snt about being convinced its about getting a life= I dont care/mind if people want/ need a god in order to have a life .I just dont I really enjoy living my life the way it comes to me.

I phoned our housing association to report the nest that they are busy building by the front door ,no one came to help us, and they are going at it like wildfire. It actually looks quite good but I seriously don't want to get stung again. I have put up a big notice saying Angry wasps leave alone but it wou;d ne nice if our housing association actually came up with a plan .

Is 'Athephobia' a real thing
jacpod comments on Jul 24, 2018:
My Atheism is no secret to anybody I have never tried to hide it nor wanted to promote it - If anyone is phobic about atheism. I might suggest that they try to see a counsellor ot help them get over it. The telling bit would arise if they didn't want to do anything about it and in that case they would have to just bear it.
Not religious, but spiritual? Really?
jacpod comments on Jul 24, 2018:
I am often carried away by music or kindness or just a colour or a babys smile these moments feel special; and the word 'special' would do and I don't mind them being called spiritual because I can relate to some emotion that is more intense - moves me more - etheric might do the job too but I know that I need a word not commonly used for a feeling that is not commonly felt by me. like being overcome or weeping at artwork, music etc. If anybody has a word that is more fitting and just as punchy I'll listen. I think 'spiritual' 'being of the spirit 'is of 'my spirit' my own inner high point . I don't care much what any one else thinks of my choice of word to explain only what is going on inside me rather than something for everybody.

jacpod comments on Jul 24, 2018:
No. I have friends who used to be religious before I met them ( I dont mean that it was me that converted them). When I was a child my bedroom was on the third floor in the large attic of an enormous house. The light switch was at the top of the first flight of stairs so it was dark and I always insisted on someone taking me up the four flights to bed - My mother was a spiritualist and used to frighten me half to death with stories of meeting spirit etc. she said that if I was frightened I should just say "I don't want to see you right now thank you !" I was so scared though that I was saying it constantly and without any space in between the words that this 'spirit' might be able to slip in to. So Nothing ever did happen and now I am a grown I doubt that it ever would have and I rather think that there are no supernatural events - I think there is a difference between being scared and how your mind reacts to that fear and what your later memories become in response to the fear response if that makes ant=y sense I think its all in us in our perceptions/misperceptions.
Minimalism...Is less really more?
jacpod comments on Jul 22, 2018:
I think I am probably an inbetweeny on this one.I tried . As a creative artist i have lots of art materials which don't really go together plus the accoutrements of easels spinning wheel, knitting needles etc. sewing machine, weaving loom, felting equipment silk painting -etc - and I live in sheltered accommodation so really only one small room to keep it all in - I also get a lot of library books given to me by the library van man about once a month - so its hard to practise minimalism with a lot of things that dont go together easily - Believe me I have tried. At 70 years old I have a hard time remembering where I put stuff and so have to use a whiteboard to write plans on . So I tried but cant really make it work
