As an atheist, how do you handle the thought of death?
jacpod comments on May 20, 2018:
I don't have to handle thoughts of death its inevitable like taxes & I wouldnt waste my precious time thinking about my own death it will come when it comes not scared ,only of pain.
I rarely think much about being Agnostic, it's a tiny little aspect of my life.
jacpod comments on May 20, 2018:
Its no part of my life until someone pulls me up on it - I don't walk around with agnostic on my t shirt or in my mind taking up valuable space and I don't really care any more what people think or feel about me; (perks of being 70 y.o.)
Has anybody else lost family members over their beliefs?
jacpod comments on May 20, 2018:
Yes but not over religious beliefs I lost family members because basically our family was mad as a box of frogs and were always falling out with each other - Manic mother ,depressive father and brother with untold problems also all cockney born except me with dubious morality so they were pretty much lost to themselves but were never religious.

jacpod comments on May 20, 2018:
I am okay with it I'd be a bit surprised if my children hadnt twigged by the time they were 6 or 7. My kids played along with the joke when they did catch themselves on. And they were hilarious pretending to believe so they;d still get a stocking I think it was good for us as a family all knowing that we were all pretending but going along with it for the laughs and jokes.

jacpod comments on May 19, 2018:
No not really, I love in a fairly passionately/passionless way. I think because I leave very often . I am a drifter and move around I am now 70 y.o. and have had many different jobs and many different qualifications. It has been an interesting life and I am now slowing down quite a lot but I think being friends is probably my blissful option as well as moving on which is blissful option number 2.
Does justice exist, or is it wishful thinking?
jacpod comments on May 19, 2018:
No I don't think justice does ever happen because it usually involves more than one person judger and judgee at the very least - so yes I think shit does just happen and we deal with it and usually it makes us a bit stronger & sometimes we 'win' on our own terms, and sometimes we 'lose' (Forgive the 'men only' fighting bit, Wm Morris was of his time - just thinking the sentiment is in the ballpark.) I pondered all these things, and how men fight and lose the battle, and the thing that they fought for comes about in spite of their defeat, and when it comes turns out not to be what they meant, and other men have to fight for what they meant under another name. jacpod comments on May 17, 2018:
The wedding cake for a gay couple in Northern Ireland made a lot of news as the bakers refused to bake it - so it became a political issue - (political issues here are often settled with dire consequences) I think its too easy to say "change your beliefs!" they are in a hardened culture which is too difficult to escape from in that easy way of just saying "Change! Change takes time - It wasnt that long ago that people were killing each other here on the streets for religion. I know quite a few local bakers who would have jumped at the chance to make a cake for anyone.

jacpod comments on May 17, 2018:
I call myself Atheist only if anyone asks my status and I care to answer - Certainly, not silly ,as something I don't have can hardly get the label 'silly ' I don't think anyone is silly for being devoutly religious either, because its their life to do with what they want. I suggest you go to the boards where most of the people are talking about terms like atheist/agnostic; because I find it seriously unimportant to me and uninteresting .
Honesty time — how tightly wrapped are your morals?
jacpod comments on May 17, 2018:
I also have an atheist background & never had a god . My mother was Manic and Brutal, my Father, Depressive and weird like a boxer on the ropes. I lied a lot didn't do any of the other things just lied whether I had to or not - At some point I realised that it wasn't good for me and I decided to tell the truth all the time unless it would hurt me to do so - I was a really strange child older than my years and nobody really knew how to deal with me - These days as an old lady I feel obliged to not be so forthright and to be a bit more political about what I say and to whom. My partner is straight as a die and doesn't mind my truths and he also tutors me to understand how to get out of situations with no unpleasantness.

How comfortable are you with the word "Atheist" ?
jacpod comments on May 16, 2018:
I am ok with it because is more pervasive than santa- who only comes once a year and kids do at least know hes not real quite early on in their life.same goes for the tooth fairy its an adults jokey game to with children and nothing to do with . But is pervasive and can be cultish so I find the word 'atheist 'fine . I rarely have to use it but its there if I am called upon to account for myself and am willing to share my situation. A lot depends upon who is asking.
Have you all had a nice day?
jacpod comments on May 16, 2018:
I spent most of my day in the garden planting stuff, weeding ,watering, etc. I live in sheltered accommodation and I collect for charity by doing laundry for other people (we have a laundry room) this morning I did four washes and got £10.00. I also go to the shops for people and collect newspapers. I like being busy don't know what to do with myself if i have nothing on the go. I run a group on wednesdays where we are colouring in from books and then collaging a table - if I get my head round the technical side of it I'll post a picture of our efforts when its done. .

Someone gave me a cigarette and said try this! it helps! and it did - I smoked for a year then quit.

Do you value empathy?
jacpod comments on May 15, 2018:
Yes very much. I was a lecturer in 'person centred counselling' Personal Growth which revolves around Warmth -(prizing) Congruence (Being genuine) and Empathy (reaching out as if you were that person). I don't think I could live without any of these and still feel my own humanity. I guess what it boils down to is caring for humanity. (And of course there are always going to be people who don't want that)

Trying to understand transgender perspective
jacpod comments on May 15, 2018:
I remember reading an article many years ago about how only having two genders was scientifically incorrect and that doctors do get it wrong on birth certificates as there are many combinations of the x and y genes. It would seem that there are more than two possible genders and that we never want to recognise that mostly for religious reasons All of the above that you have said can be true. I have friends who feel that they are men trapped in womens bodies and vice versa and for many reasons and I believe them all - I think having the lived experience of not feeling ok with the sexual pronouncement is something those of us who feel ok in our assigned genders cant even begin to imagine and I totally go along with their right to do, say, be, whatever they want.
So I am curious.

I think if you practise tuning out or catch yourself when you are capacitous of doing it you might be able to replicate it when you need it. Also singing a silly song to yourself in your head - I think there might be many ways to tune out - I have D.I.D because I was adept at tuning out my mentally disturbed family- I called it 'going away' but its good to be in control of ot yourself rather than going as far as I did and getting alters.

I had my second baby at a military hospital in Woolwich London I was scared because I thought that it was all going to be horribly regimented - It turned out to be great and so relaxed, the nurse who was looking after me in Labour - woke me up - as I had napped for a bit and said "Come on! I want this baby born before the end of my shift!" she was really lovely and my son was born and she was really pleased - In contrast the Hospital I had my daughter in, was supposedly the best teaching hospital in England and it was awful, really regimented . And a 15 year old cadet nurse delivered my baby as everybody else had left us to it.
What’s the most interesting experience you’ve had with a zealously religious person?

I wish it had been interesting - I was 15 just left work , and got the wrong train at Charing Cross which was non stop to sevenoaks - The train was a corridor one and crowded and I was pinned to the wall by this man preaching at me about me being a sinner and repenting -& embracing the lord- I had never experienced anything like it in my life before as I have never had a god (not even thor or odin) I then had to get out at sevenoaks and wait for a train going back the way - I didnt get home till 9.p.m
If it's good advice is a whole different story ....
