This is a question for recovering addicts (drug, sex, food, etc) .
jacpod comments on Mar 25, 2018:
yes I think i have already posted this - I was alcoholic and went to my doctor he gave me some yellow tablets and said iI had to take one a day and if I drank alcohol I'd die. I did as he said and found that I was the same person sober as I was when drunk so no need ot drink - It was good learning and early enough in my drinking career to really learn that lesson.
Oh, God!!
jacpod comments on Mar 25, 2018:

What do you find sexy?
jacpod comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I am not very sexual because of childhood abuse, I like cuddles and fun, laughter and good conversations playfulness good humour but have given sex a by-pass for a long time now - I just like being with intelligent ,funny people.
For atheists - what makes you believe no deity exists?
jacpod comments on Mar 25, 2018:
Wrong wording I do not 'believe' that no deity exists as there is no evidence for a belief of that kind. My unbelief is of no importance to me at all it is a non subject . You say 'there isnt enough evidence' There is NO evidence and - To make the point once and for all there is nothing to believe.there is a story - There are many many stories do you think Heidi exists or Tom Sawyer? I am totally uninterested in gods
Ethics verses family
jacpod comments on Mar 25, 2018:

What Guides You?
jacpod comments on Mar 25, 2018:
I dont have a chosen path and dont have a guide I just play it as it comes I dont feel the need of any explanation or a list of things. I think I am probably just playful and have emotions that come and go and ideas I'd like to try out - I am not a planner by any means just meet what comes to me . Yesterday my neighbours garden was a mess and I tidied it up for her as it needed doing. Someoen needed me to be kind to them and it was no big deal so I was - I think my life is simple enough for me to just live it.
Do you believe in a HIGHer power?

Do you find giving advice to someone who disregards it, is a waste of time.
jacpod comments on Mar 24, 2018:
Mostly People asking for advice are using a hook- gambit to reel you in to listening to what they want to tell you or to get a free pass from you to do what they want to do and will do anyway.
What defines a good person to you?

jacpod comments on Mar 24, 2018:
Don't come to Northern Ireland its even worse than what you describe over tehre where I was born and raised - and relationships are paramount and knowing everyones name to the nth generation. I have so many conversations that start off sane and end up in that - talking about people to the n'th generation. Its hard to be different I empathise and sympathise. if you arent bothered about the person saying this to you - YOu could always have forgotten to turn the gas off........
What's humanity's best attribute? It's worst?
jacpod comments on Mar 24, 2018:
Lovingkindness - worst is fear!
What is the meaning of life?
jacpod comments on Mar 24, 2018:
I think the problem i have with even thinking about this is my head hurts with all the information about all the people in this world and all their differences. 7 Billion I cant even encompass it - my brain hurts -and then all teh different beliefs approx 4 thousand and two hundred religions - I cant think of any meaning that would mean anything given even those first two variables. I wouldn't even know where to start about giving the universe meaning

Are the people around you religious? Are you the oddball?
jacpod comments on Mar 24, 2018:
I live in a very religious country N.I. Strangely its ok to be atheist and out . Its only not ok for catholics ot accept protestandts or vice versa (some are O.K ) Round about the Marching season it all get s a lot hotter but atheists are pretty much left alone - It is so not okay to be gay here though -seriously dont come unless you go to the south where they have a gay Taoiseach.
Are the people around you religious? Are you the oddball?
jacpod comments on Mar 24, 2018:
yes but people are Ok with me its the catholic protestand divide that annoys them - Atheists arent even in hte picture in N.I . (nice for me)

For atheists - what makes you believe no deity exists?
jacpod comments on Mar 24, 2018:
I dont' 'believe no deity exists that would be a complete and utter waste of my time which I cherish- I HAVE NO SKY GODS - I WANT NO SKY GODS - simple eh? you are the one who needs the proof, dont put it on me! And if you are as I suspect proseletysing - I will block you!

jacpod comments on Mar 23, 2018:
I live amongst some of the most religious peopel I have ever known who drink like fish are the 4th in the Country charts for Obesity and seem if my Gossip Mill is in any way correct to have very many relationships on the side as well as abuse. Apparently being with one man for 25years without resorting to other abandonments is not even noteworthy if youre not Protestant or Catholic
How reliable is the study of history?
jacpod comments on Mar 23, 2018:
I remember in a history lesson, being told that the bible was at first mainly verbal , people carried the verbal tradition forwards and as the Emperor Constantine was the head of a troublesome empire that had many different factions in it .He himself was a pagan but got scholars to write the bible which previously had been mostly word of mouth tradition in order to unite his kingdom. (I dont really care if this is true or not my self) but it seems to have worked for him.
What percentage of your relationships are you “out” as an atheist?
jacpod comments on Mar 23, 2018:
All of them Not everyone asks as it is potentially divisive but people seem fine here that I would be atheist - a very minority group no hassle from us heathens!
Is atheism in America still worst than ANY religion?
jacpod comments on Mar 23, 2018:
I'm not in the U.S but in Northern Ireland where there has been a lot of unrest concerning religion, strangely atheists are rarely talked about here as long as we are quiet its a free passage the struggle is definitely still protestant v catholic
Should athiest really be saying 'rest in peace'
jacpod comments on Mar 23, 2018:
I would say sorry for your loss amd wouldnt overthink it people expect you to say something comforting & I dont mind doing that because its ritual time and the whole ending of life is ritualised.
Reunited
jacpod comments on Mar 23, 2018:
Brilliant picture! well done you's*
I am going through a very rough patch in my life right now.
jacpod comments on Mar 23, 2018:
This happened ot me at a time and i actually had nowhere to live, my children had left home by then, I stayed with different friends and was obsessed about always having a clean pair of knickers so I had stashes of them at the house of everyone i knew - I think having that one clear plan in my head was a focus for everything at that point ,and yes I burst into tears often but not because of my partner just lack of structure, - I was working as a lecturer in person centred counselling, so work was important - it was all the between hours that were hard not having a structure. I got over it pretty well but there are so many losses you have to grieve - Might be a good plan to list them Yes its always fine at the end but that middle bit needs a lot of cossetting I seriously wish you well!
My Sister is probably indifferently agnostic.
jacpod comments on Mar 23, 2018:
Thats me because I never had a god and was abused as a child so I never had parents either mother manic, father depressive. older brother got away out of it - I wouldn' t know him if I saw him - Its immensely freeing to just be and have your own self - I am not interested in religion at all - interested in people who are having a hard time with it but probably more sympathetic than empathic as i have never been there or done that god thang.

What moral code do you follow now that you are non-religious?
jacpod comments on Mar 22, 2018:
I dont have a code just some guidelines for myself, if I fall short of them I will apologise; I liek the wiccan creed 'an it harm none do as thou wilt!' (though I am not Wiccan) But I like that 'if it harm none' bit: so me angrily chunnering to myself is fine. I think also learning by your own mistakes is a good ideal for me - I want to create my own manners and be ready to be pulled up if it does impinge on others as then there would be learning - I am a bit of a mousy character and tend to stay in the background and not like a lot of fuss so I get to watch others and decide what I dont want to be like and that sort of leads me to what I want to be like- Kindness gets me out of all sorts of trouble so thats in the mix somewhere.
Feeling a bit emotionally shackled at the moment.

Losing Faith in Humanity
jacpod comments on Mar 22, 2018:
I dont know if this is the right ballpark I am in, but I seriously mistrust my own Government (London and Northern Ireland). I feel I am being fed fake news, I feel I dont have a community any more even though I live in a sheltered housing scheme - also I have Hyperacusis which means Loud noises are really troubling for me and send me a bit dotty and no one recognises this . My Housing Association is off the chart for just doing stuff without consulting us even though we are the ones who have to live here and pay for that privilege and I realise to that the word community can be bandied about but mean nothing. so many things just happen- to us and htis asn tthe case when I came here - Consulatation was key! Safety was key!

jacpod comments on Mar 22, 2018:

jacpod comments on Mar 22, 2018:
OOOh I am so glad that I am seen as dangerous no one else has ever said that in my entire 70 year life. Makes me burst with pride - Now I feel seriously dangerous no more mrs Nice gal - I will be wolf whistlin all the men on building sites - WARNING (I SHALL WEAR PURPLE) Jenny Joseph When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings and make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other people's gardens and learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat and eat three pounds of sausages at a go or only bread and pickles for a week and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes that keep us dry and pay our rent and not swear in the street and set a good example for the children. We must have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Can true feminism ever be achieved?
jacpod comments on Mar 21, 2018:
I was a plasterer, always hte only woman on site, got shedloads of shit from men, when working on large projects they would use my mixing bucket and leave it dirty and always walk away from me at any break times . An old man passing by when I was pointing a gable end, shouted at me that I was taking jobs of scousers and I ran down the ladder and chased him and made him apologise - There were too many instances to count sexism alive and kicking last time I looked ;

jacpod comments on Mar 21, 2018:
I read 'the water babies' as a child and there was Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby and MrsBedonebyasyoudid - It was a terrible book at that age I didnt realise all the christian values in it just read it but there is something like 'karma' in there that I'm not ashamed to own. I think I judge them on how they treat others.

Mother Theresa. Bad or good?
jacpod comments on Mar 20, 2018:
I find it hard to judge because you never really know what brought someone to that kind of conclusion - To me it sounds totally out of wack, but I am not religious and I cant really imagine anyone saying this unless it was a comfort to someone who was suffering and did have a god. proseletysers seem to speak in a different language to the rest of us so maybe thats why we dont get the comfort that is only really in 'believer territory"
Not believing in god/s began at an early age for me.
jacpod comments on Mar 20, 2018:
I didnt have that pressure irreligious family I had a friend when I was in my forties who told me that she was part of the 'We free's' and on Sunday they went 3 times to church adn at home had to sit in their best starchy frocks and read the bible all day - Sounds hellish!

Are you an open or closet agnostic/atheist, and why?
jacpod comments on Mar 19, 2018:
Open Atheist, if anyone wants to know; - very few people in Northern Ireland do want to know: - I do remember going to an ongoing symposium of 'All faiths and None', here. - And I was the only one who was 'None' It was funny really because I kept going even though people were a bit nervous of me, then the whole thing collapsed when we had a Born Again christian being told to get out of the building because she got into a heated verbal struggle with a Muslim who was 'The Guest' I dont really know if htere was any way they could have handled it better - but I felt sorry for us all.
Atheist wedding vows
jacpod comments on Mar 19, 2018:
I got married in a civil wedding ceremony it took about five minutes to complete at our local town hall which is about 100 yards from where we live , no vows or anyhting just sign on the dotted line - the nicest part was that we then went to a photographer who posed us in different ways and it was kindly and nice more intimate. Later we decided marriage wasnt for us because we felt - more tied and responsible than we had before, so we got divorced.
Is life meaningful without religion?
jacpod comments on Mar 19, 2018:

Ladies I have question for you. What do you think about facial hair?
jacpod comments on Mar 19, 2018:
Not really sure I am 'a lady' but will respond - I dont think these hirsute things are of themselves are sexy I think its the person who is either sexy or not -YOu could surprise your wife by taking her out somewhere where she has never been and doing somethign surprisingly kind and generous. I ma sure she loves you whatever your hair situation is.
What do you find sexy?
jacpod comments on Mar 19, 2018:
Kindness.
I work for a company that is contracted through the county.
jacpod comments on Mar 19, 2018:
Really sorry to hear that , I have never been in this situation, now retired , as a baby boomer it was a sellers market regarding work - I understand that everyone is now being hammered and don't really get why? Surely there is enough to go around and surely we can have a community that looks after each other ?
Without religion, what keeps morality from being completely subjective?
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
I had an image then of a child falling over and crying with a cut knee and I odnt know anyone who wouldn't comfort them - (Well unless they were glued ot their mobile at teh time) I was once on a CND train going to a demo when we got derailed - people got off the train in the middle of a field dazed and some with cuts and everyone who wasnt wounded automatically helped found sweets and shared them tore up petticoats to tie round cuts. My friend had a whole pack of rescue remedy on her and she was so kind that others followed suit, And I have experienced this sort of community spirit many times in my life - People on the whole are great whenever they are called upon to give of kindness.
What's your inspiration?
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
I think I lost my early life round about 15 years old when I left an abusive home and went to live with a boyfriend - that probably gave me some confidence and I love learning new skills I mainly diddle with this and that I, have many craft skills and implements, sometimes I teach other people if they want to make something and dont know how - In another life I was a plasterer in a workers co-operative and later got together with a joiner, we made a good team. I have lived a full and interesting life and at 70ish am beginning to slow down and write things here ;and just do whatever I wish -poor health is a bit of a pesky downside - but so far so good.
What moral code do you follow now that you are non-religious?
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
I never was religious at any time, but - I do my best to be kind and helpful , I lived and worked in Housing and worker co-ooperatives for a long time so have a certain code for being with & dealing with people in need and also people who want to put me down . when I am angry I try to defuse myself and if that doesnt work I get someoen to help me not to fan a grudge- I live by myself most of hte time and do whatever I want so its not like I meet tons of people who might do my head in.
How do you tell religious people that you're an atheist?
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
It works: most people I say that to just say 'oh right ' But then the U.K is pretty godless, if they start to try to convert me or say they'll pray for me then I just get off. Lifes too short.
I have a question for anyone who wished to respond.
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
I am not sure that I have very many 'beliefs' I think I am pretty much tuned in to my minute by minute life - before I retired I was a practising person centered therapist and grounded in that approach. I like to stay 'here and now' when I am washing plates I find it pretty easy to keep washing them without tuning out so I probably dont have room for beliefs and the more I say that 'b' -word the less sense it seems to make - Life just is.
Do you believe in any higher power at all
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
I believe the sun moon and planets exist, they seem quite like higher powers
How to 'come out?'
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
Its a hard question ot answer because we dont really know what you r mum is like and how she might act. My mother and father were not religious at all so there were not any expectations on me - Given that I dont know her, I'd go with move away and then tell her in a really nice letter including how much you love and respect her but need to live your own life adn live with your own choices.
Should religion be taught in schools?
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
NO!
What was something that pushed you towards doubting your religion?
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
I never had a religion but would go with different friends to their churches with them when I was younger as all the local kids were made to go to Sunday school except for me - Basically nothing to do - I found it all so lame - I learned to read at a young age and wwas ploughing though books and they had structure which was completely lacking in bible stories. I couldnt see what the other children could see in it - Stopped goign and made the local library ny reference point.
How many people have had the experience of having to deal with an AYA (Angry Young Atheist).

jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
I am artistic, lacking many technical skills, my partner is the opposite we complement each other pretty well -we also look after each other, as I can do domestic stuff and he can plan and see future problems - I think we probably have each others backs- We dont live together but just near each other and we have many of the same wants for entertainment etc. It works well but we have been together over 25 years so a lot has been ironed out in that time .neither of us are dominant personae.

I read books and watch series with violence in it (violence doesnt only show itself in fisticuffs) I think most of us know the difference between whats out there that can really harm us and that which is a sort of 'what if? entertainment - But no one needs to watch anything they dont want to and on English T.V there are very often warnings about explict violence and bad language.
Without religion, what keeps morality from being completely subjective?
jacpod comments on Mar 18, 2018:
Upringing most parents start off with please and thankyou ( or in childspeak maybe peas and fankoo) When children are older and get into fights with other children parents step in as peacekeepers and moralists. I never had a religion my parents never had a religion and so how do YOU think I picked up manners, morals and a fair code to live by?
:-) just preaching to the choir....

I'm vegan I am strangely allergic to meat - have been since a child and also could not eat anything that had different textures in it and couldn't eat any food on my plate that had touched any other food - I must have been a nightmare child- So not for any reason I guess just OCD and craziness - I like bananas they are simple if you ever invite me to lunch a hand of bananas and a spoon or two of rice will suffice !
What's the best book you've read lately?

How comfortable are you with the word "Atheist" ?
jacpod comments on Mar 17, 2018:
I am Ok with the A- word because those other-s you mentioned santa and tooth fairy arent quite so all powerful and all consuming as god and angels which appear in conversations very often - A child losing a tooth is a pretty family sort of affair not involving a god and santa is usually seen off by the age of seven or eight with no hard feelings because most kids actually know it is mum and dad- But god is actually very present for many many people we are exposed to and so while I agree with you about that state being the norm it is constantly under pressure no one really proseletyses about santa or tooth fairies its in the hands of the parent s but people go on and on and on about god its on the radio every day etc. I like 'atheist' as it shuts people up and you only need to use it once (where I come from). My friend always says - 'Dont let them start!'
What makes you are great partner?
jacpod comments on Mar 17, 2018:
My partner lives in the flat above me in sheltered accommodation he is funny and kind and more intelligent than me in terms of seeing thinks from all sides I am more artistic and I make all our food - We Complement each other what I cant, do/see, he can and vice versa, We are both pretty tolerant although when I get angry or scared he deals with it. We do both laugh a lot and enjoy watching dramas together in the evenings. We have a lot in common which is nice but a lot of time to do our own things. (getting older is the rub)
Are most agnostics intelligent and left-leaning?
jacpod comments on Mar 17, 2018:
I am in the uk but labour to the core, never been anything else, havent ever beeen anything else but agnostic either - I was in my youth and up to forties - a big fan of demonstrations- My children seemed to get in the swing of it too when they were old enough to get out there and protest- bit too old now with creaky jointy hips, but I always vote.socialist.
What is your response to "god blees you" after sneezing?
jacpod comments on Mar 17, 2018:
I put up with it dont want to be an absolute party pooper for all those who like it or say it automatically without thinking - Gesundheit! would fit the bill just as well though -( I rather think that might be what German people say)
