I've been thinking about Morality .
jacpod comments on Mar 17, 2018:
I grew up with war stories (born 1948) of ordinary peoples heroism and capacity to withstand - I sometimes think that you never know what sort of person you are till tested or till someone takes you to one side and gives you a lesson in humanity. I wrote a post here this morning when I was angry, about never again getting a man's newspaper for him because of his attitude to me. I think people who are deferred to, for age or soemthing related to their work get an inflated sense of their own merely human worth, within the community, and it isnt helpful for their relationships with others .I rather think upbringing has a lot to do with it but that change is always possible.

Is there such a thing as too much kindness?
jacpod comments on Mar 16, 2018:
Not that I know about - from my psychology days some troule d children and adults have difficulty taking in positive strokes and need to have a bit of negative in teh mix - as in "thats really good for a person in your position!" Hard to judge though unles you have been working with them for quite a while.

Do you find giving advice to someone who disregards it, is a waste of time.
jacpod comments on Mar 16, 2018:
Sometiems I wonder if giving advice is more for the giver than the givee and also to teach us a lesson that people often have to learn their own lessons in order to claim the learning . I am not sayign i dont give gratuious advice but if people take a different way that is still their learning .

Can you provide a label for my belief system?
jacpod comments on Mar 15, 2018:
Given that the only reality you are in at the moment is 'here and now' 'on planet earth' - your belief system is easily explained with agnostic/atheist - given that you also ruled out life after death - no other words needed - or; wait and see what happens if you manage to transcend and reach another plane of being - then you can choose your own word.
Is sex a touchy subject for you to talk about?
jacpod comments on Mar 15, 2018:
Pretty much I was sexually abused as a child by my father (depressive) and physically abused by my mother (manic) those scars take a long time to heal - I once phoend the Samaritans and they told em to get get off the line -I left home at 15 years old - My current partner and I are physical and loving & caring but non sexual . I have D.I.D from my childhood experiences and that takes a fair bit of managing - I think its perfectly okay to state boundaries straight away and maintain them with vigour to make sure they are not breached - and there are kindly souls out there. I hope that we both get to meet them !
I really liked this post.. had to share.. pretty much sums it up for me anyway.
jacpod comments on Mar 15, 2018:
None of my family are religious in any way and when I first went to grammar school our R.E teacher gave each of us a random passage out of the bible and we were asked to comment on it for homework - My text was about Rahab the Harlot - I asked my dad what a Harlot was and he shuffled around shiftily and theb wrote a letter to my teacher saying that if she was going to teach this stuff then she was going to have to explain what a Harlot was , because he wouldnt. I dont remember being enlightened by a red faced teacher.

Could Society Benefit From A Paradigm?
jacpod comments on Mar 15, 2018:
I have always liked this idea when i lived in communes we had the same amount of spending money , or just took what we needed if there was money in the pot as some people smoked some people didnt really need money so a bit of Marxist ;from each according to their means to each according to their needs - I have never needed very much dont drink dont smoke like wearing well worn clothes.

jacpod comments on Mar 15, 2018:

Question worth thinking
jacpod comments on Mar 14, 2018:
I have never found it to be so for myself but many people take comfort in the idea that there is something 'better' 'after ' this vale of tears,' Science whilst exciting is not partiicularly comforting in that -story telling sort of way - its easier and some peopel want 'easy'- I wouldnt rip any of that 'easy' off them in order to replace it with basically nothing they can hang on to. We all have different strengths and weaknesses and like the possum that turns over to play dead yet again, its a sign to leave them to their own resources and conforts
There is no agnostic vs. atheist! The peeve I have...

My children are not baptised, strangely my daughter thought she could get married in a church, when she realised she would need to get baptised first she changed to a hotel.
What has been your experience, as an atheist, in a commitment with a person of faith?
jacpod comments on Mar 14, 2018:
My partner is atheist as am I - I can see the problem but seems only a problem if converting someone is part of the mix if you can love each other as you are without wanting change you have it made! I have had in the past people crying at me that htey dont want me to die and not go to heaven with them - Its a big turn off and doesnt work.
Can you provide a label for my belief system?
jacpod comments on Mar 14, 2018:
As far as I know teh terms agnostic (without knowing ) or atheist (without gods) covers all of that, and is simple.
How do you make life meaningful without the help of religion?
jacpod comments on Mar 14, 2018:
I dont have to 'make' my life meaningful it always was and always will be - Most people I know enjoy my company and i have enough to do to keep me amused - I am seldom bored but tell me why do you think life is less meaningful without a god - It is your life after all. I thankfully have never had a god and have always had plenty of friends to play and laugh with.

Government Tyranny
jacpod comments on Mar 14, 2018:
We had armed conflict with government in Northern Ireland - Scary stuff I had a massive gun pointed in my car window at me, held by a spotty 16 year old kid after The IRA tossed a bomb into Army barracks and the hard borders were awful - So many guns.
Is advertising immoral?
jacpod comments on Mar 14, 2018:
Yes I think so, although I am not sure that affects me personally; I can see how children 'need' to have the 'new' trainers etc. to keep up with their peers or be ridiculed and some of them cost and arm and a leg and we have people sleeping rough on the streets - I dont know how to square that circle for my self. I wish we could start over again. Shpping seems to have taken over where religion ended.

Is there such a thing as too much kindness?
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
Not that I can remember. I think when tentatively offering a kindness its sort of important to remember it may not be what the recipient wants & putting someone in the position of having to accept a kindness they are not ready for, or willing to take on board is a bit counter to good intentions. I think gently offering and seeing what happens next might be useful. (I have known people to take me over completely and that is a hard one to deal with)
Were You Raised In A Single Parent Home Or 2 Parent Home
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
I had two birth parents both emotionally wounded by war experiences, neither of them were capable of being parents. Mother Bi-polar father Depressive so I left home at 15 y.o. adn constructed myself - looking back I am grateful to them for letting me go so easily.
Considering you don't believe in God or heaven, are you afraid of dying?
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
I'm fine with it - not afraid of dying - afraid of living soemtiems in this political mess we all seem to be in - I might not want to have a lot of pain in my dying process but that wouldnt really be in my gift to choose either way - No I'm cool with death!
What was the most expensive clothing item you owned and how much did it cost?

How important is it to people to have political compatibility?
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
I am happier to be with someone who is socialist, than anything else my partner isnt particularly politicially minded but is humanitarian I dont think I could tolerate a partner with religious belief unless tehy never ever talked about it and that doesnt seem feasible. One of the problems I have with religious folk is that sooner or later they will start to proseletyse bringing in small anecdotes and its wearing - I'd far rather give them a wide berth - Its me that cant really handle it. .
God and pronouns
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
'They' is acceptable if you get the grammar to go with it on here I never give god, a capital G but I might if I were somewhere where it would be offensive to others. I only ever want to speak for myself and let others be with whatever they want to believe.
How would you explain Easter without referreing it to as the ressurection of Christ?
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
The druids called it Oestre and it was a festival more about the returning cycle of a warming sun and a spring that promised a coming fruitfulness and good harvest with the buds devleoping - I am guessing that is where we get 'oestrogen' from - the druids were aware of the oneness of all nature.

If you are a conservative, do consider insulting the president a personal attack on you?
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
No I think its a personal attack on themselves because they are the losers- I vote in the UK I vote socialist always. No one can insult me personally because I have nothing to do with them apart from making my mark- at the polling station - Politicians are a breed apart as far as I am concerned and I wouldnt trust many of them.
What makes a person "intelligent?"
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
Nice post thanks! I remember taking an I.Q test for a work assessment the assessors said after a full days work - I had a great score but, sorry to point out that my spatial awareness was seriously low and that I wouldnt be able to be a potter as I wished - I gained several prizes for my raku pots and achieved a first in fine and applied arts despite my 'apparent ' disability, the tests were proven not to be accurate, good job I never listened. I agree many many ways to be intelligent

If you could reinvent the education system, what would it look like?
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
I went to a Free school and it was amazingly good for me -we were allowed ot work at whatever we liked as long as we were working it gave me confidence to learn for myself and to be the person I was rather than pushed into a box - I know of other people who went to free schools and our experiences were good - So I would reinvent that self learning skill.
Why do people hide their feeling/emotion? How do you let emotion out?
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
I have D.I.D I'm pretty immediate with my feelings, but have never grieved for people who died, I wondered if it was coming from an abusive family that made me not care about death -
What are your best coping strategies for dealing with death?
jacpod comments on Mar 13, 2018:
I have never grieved for anyone who died and I dont know why -Its sort of a mystery to me - People I really loved - they died I felt nothing; people i never liked died, I felt nothing. My best friends dad died and she felt nothing until a famous celebrity died and then she cried - I have never cried, maybe I have a chromosome missing.
Why do supposedly intelligent people believe in god.

Do you believe time exists?
jacpod comments on Mar 12, 2018:
Not really but I do get comfort from my clock and having something that tells me when to put my dinner on - I'd like a speaking clock that said - finish that sentance my love its nearly time to start the dinner - look at me! I used to live 2 miles away from Greenwich Mean Time and was terribly disappointed when i was little to see the puny very ordinary clock on the wall that keeps the time. Outside the observatory is also a line of bronze some king put a finger on his nose and his right arm out and that became a yard measure and it was put in the ground as a weights and measures initiative but in the summer the bronze gets longer, and shorter in the winter due to heat and cold .

I r smart?
jacpod comments on Mar 12, 2018:
Everybody is smart about something thats why it somehow works when you co-operate with others who have smarts - to get a job done. My Atheism has nothing to do with my smarts (if I have any left at my age!) An absence of belief is hardly noteworthy in my book, its what I actually do and say that counts that is why I like the ideal of co-operation /mutual aid whatever.
Time
jacpod comments on Mar 12, 2018:
I loved my friend Mandy, she was really amazing, she had problems walking and used sticks and her arms and legs seemed ot have a mind of their own and she was outrageously funny - When grown men picked her up to carry her accross the road she would make them pick her up and go back accross the road so she could do it herself - We went to the Co-operative college at Beechwood Leeds to a worker Co-operative fair and it was hilarious when she got tipsy and tried to pee, in teh wild - She taught me such a a lot and died youngish - She taught sex hygiene to young apprentice boys as an FE lecturer and confided in me once that she was terrified of falling over on stage and all the lads getting off and leaving - It actually happened one day and she said they very respectfully caught her and put her upright and returned to their seats as if nothing had happened. I do miss her - She knew that she didnt have long here and she made the most of it.

God vs santa clause?
jacpod comments on Mar 12, 2018:
I think honesty is possibly the best policy most children grow out of Santa by themselves when they get the joke- Pets that dont have a long shelf life are good for explaining death after they have been ritually buried in a shoebox with all your best flower blooms and great ceremony. I dont think there are any shoulds or oughts about explaining. At some poing tou will pass a burial place and they might ask questions then about what it is - I think its a good idea not to put it on them till they ask or it happens naturally.
What is the greatest joy in your life?
jacpod comments on Mar 12, 2018:
I think the fact that I am in sheltered accommodation which makes me feel slightly safer - that I(now retired) can have all the time in the world for diddling around with craftwork that might come to something and might not it doesnt matter - that I feel freedom as a positive I owe no one anything and no one owes me - I have a very kind partner and we dont overdo the time together so there are no rules - Also I can play the 'aul' doll 'card if anyone would be trying to upset me - it seems far more straightforward than when I was younger and pretty much anybody's - I remember the title of one of Carl Rogers' books - On becoming a Person - At last I am a Person-Put out the bunting! dance in the streets!
Any amusing/amazing stories about your pets?
jacpod comments on Mar 12, 2018:
My grandmother lived on the Isle of Dogs in the East end of London - (Dockland) because they were so close to the river and rats , she always had a cat called 'Fluffy !' There were many many fluffy's over the years most were not at all fluffy = Then she moved to the south east of London as all her children had moved out and the grandad had died - Our extended family were all living in two streets next to each other - The last fluffy was loved by everyone in our neighbourhood he had extra paws on each paw and once fell out of a very high window having gone to sleep on the outside sill; he landed well and just shook himself - then he went to sleep in the shade under the back tyre of my uncles car and his head was actually run over but he survived with broken teeth all on one side. He would go to sleep in the middle of the road and neighbours would stop their cars and pick him up and hang him over the fence where he usually napped. He died when he was the grand old age of 18y.o. There never was another 'fluffy'
How reliable is the study of history?
jacpod comments on Mar 12, 2018:
well its a guide and sometimes history is able to be well documented or authenticated but we would do well to remember that history is always written by the Victors. I am not particularly interested in History dont claim any for my self and I do like watching documentaries on any history to see how the story has gone and might go.

How many actively seek to expand your horizons?
jacpod comments on Mar 11, 2018:
I read a lot of books never really without one I have been challenged a lot by my own lifestyle choices - living and working in communes & worker co-ops travelled a lot - Europe, China America. I guess the most 'new' was going to China before they opened up to the west. My friend and I were the only Europaens, everywhere we went and it was mind blastingly different. My friend a Health Visitor from Manchester wanted to close the whole country down - We gave a seminar to a symposium of Psychology and Psychiatry Lecturers who were hungry for all things Western and when we got there they - the lecturers were busy trying to clean the whole place up (thats mind blowing!) . I was also in East Berlin - when I was in West Germany, We were allowed to visit the East on a one day stamped permit. I was wearing cut down Levis and I was so' stared at 'for the whole day because the East Germans were so hungry for anything western.Something they hadnt previously been exposed too -
Who is the most eccentric person in your family?
jacpod comments on Mar 11, 2018:
Me - Basically I dont care what I look like; rarely in my 70 years have I worn makeup and then only when someone has forced me into it, I love 'old' clothes, My hair grows quickly and its straight so I grow it for childrens cancer wigs. I have D.I.D and that can be disturbing (but mostly for me ) I find the preoccupations of my society strange and havent ever really fitted in though I do have friends. I was always a strange child and grew up to be a strange mother and granny .

What do you do when your child does something that makes you resentful?
jacpod comments on Mar 11, 2018:
That is a really tough one - resentment is like a simmering fire inside - the old platitude 'time heals' is probably only useful if your'e on the road to recovering already - If you can let go have a good howl at the moon one night when youre on your own , physical stuff is good for anger like using up the energy in your body so that adrenaline levels are nor an issue, and if you do get to have a cry thats a real help too.
What do you like most about yourself?
jacpod comments on Mar 11, 2018:
There isnt any one thing that stands out -I am easygoing most of the time, I like being busy at anything really and have a wide range of interests - do a lot of craftwork and gardening - I thought when I wrote 'easygoing' that it was a sort of non-descriptive element but I think its worth more than that; like being the one who truly doesnt mind where we are going for a coffee so doesnt get in the way of any decision -I dont mind where we go or what we do as long as I am with friends.

I didnt, they knew that neither I nor their father had a god, nor any of our wider family that they came across - We moved around a lot when they were little and also lived in communes My daughter and son are now 50 and 49 y.o and I cant remember the subject ever coming up - I always let them look for themselves to find their own schools Children know better than adults I think what they are looking for because they are the ones in that school era- my daughter always nosed out the toilets and cloakrooms first my son the games facilities.
Do you thinks symbols and words change meanings over time?
jacpod comments on Mar 11, 2018:
I think its one o fhte things that we have to accept each new generation changes the language and the meanings, mostly so the old codgers wont understand what they are saying - Its their culture - It's like cockney rhyming slang by the time you have worked out the meaning of the rhyme from only the first part of it - they are ten steps ahead of you but mostly 20 steps ahead of the police.

I used to be a fan of Hawkwind.
