Unexplained Religious Experiences
jacpod comments on Mar 3, 2018:
I have a dx of D,I,D dissociative identity disorder, It is usually abusive parent/s or other adults that cause this - I never remember what it is my alters get up to but sometimes I am really whacked out- It sounds like the same kind of arena to me.
Noam Chomsky said that both aethist and theist organisations are doing the same sales.
jacpod comments on Mar 3, 2018:
Atheist organisation? what would that be? I am laughing inside because I was remembering going to a rally in Trafalgar Square and we were looking for that red and black flag, to get behind and it was going round and round as hte flag bearers couldn't get it together to move forwards. This is a kindly post I am anarchist and atheist.
Higher Power and AA
jacpod comments on Mar 3, 2018:
My partner before I met him went to AA and he can leave the higher power stuff out of his consciousness- I went a different route before I met him and just went to my doctor and told him "I think I am an alcoholic" he asked soem questions then said yes I think you are too take these tablets and don't drink wholst youre on them or you'll die. After the first tablet I went to the pub with my friends and drank dark lemonade that looked like lager. Nobody noticed any difference in me and I was surprised to find that my bubbliness was mine and not die to the drink. I havent wanted of felt a need for a drink since. so about 40 years sober without AA.

jacpod comments on Mar 3, 2018:
I am not sure if its the same thing, that youre talking about but my partner lives above me and we meet up for dinner at one o clock, then go our own ways and watch T.V together in the evening, we share a van and live sort of co-independently
What's something that has never (or will never) changed about you?
jacpod comments on Mar 2, 2018:
I like that you said that because it got my neurons firing up and rememebered how I would do really fiddly things like painting used matchsticks different colours (cutting off the burnt bit) and then sticking them together with glue- We also had two big gardens and I would sit in it the front one that was just grass painting the daisies (small weeds not big ones) with my watercolours. Since then I have probably had a go at every craft I ever met - weaving woodcarving knitting crochet tablet weaving decoupage - I like the challenge of learning and read a craft book get inspired and then mess with their patterns doing my own thing,.
Stash Reduction People like me, who like yarn and fiber or fabric, always have a large stash of ...
jacpod comments on Mar 2, 2018:
My major problems with stash is I can't go past a wool shop without buying some more - I am in the process at the moment of knitting baby blankets simple pattern so I can go at it at any time and use up my oddments but its a bit like the Rumpelstiltskin story
Why are people so greedy?
jacpod comments on Mar 2, 2018:
Because they are hungry for the things they can't get {love, self worth, a better job, nicer home etc}. So greed for having substitutes never ends because it isnt reaching the right spot - so manufacturing things never ends - sales never end. the word greed itself has a poor reputation and sometimes I find myself bored and then greedy for amusement or knowledge - (Things don't count much with me )
Do you eat meat?
jacpod comments on Mar 2, 2018:
Vegan/veggie
Why do religious people feel the need to go announcing to the general public that they love and ...
jacpod comments on Mar 2, 2018:
I think its just hardwiring that has set solid, I doubt that anybody who does it has any inkling of their own personal process behind it - probably a bit like us Brits sayign 'Hallo nice weather for ducks?' when it rains - to all and sundry- One is religious based one is socal nicety but I think at base -Its just a greeting ,probably said so many times that its meaningless to all parties.
Whose lives do matter?

jacpod comments on Mar 1, 2018:
I never had a god so its a short story, my parents didnt have a god ,maybe what you have never had, you never miss? - so no need for an intellectual journey. I actually don't think my agnosticism /atheism is of any importance to me at all -Its describing a non state, an absence of ......whatever...if it were not for theism we would probably not be talking here together so I guess thats one good thing at least....as I admire you one and all
Does anyone think religion will go away some day?
jacpod comments on Mar 1, 2018:
France is the most atheistic country in Europe (source the Independent newspaper)
What is the worst thing you have ever done. (be honest)
jacpod comments on Mar 1, 2018:
I actually can't remember the worst thing I ever did , it must have been seriously bad as I seem to have erased it completely ; but I remember the aftermath as I said to my Partner 'I'll do Anything to try to put this right!" He answered that he wanted me to cut my hair - he has OCD - (I had very long hair and it shed - the only reason I had long hair is because I have a fear of hairdressers) So time went on and at one point he asked me point blank When are you going to get your hair cut then? I told him about my fear and he made an appointment to come with me and hold my hand all the way though and promised to dive in if the hairdresser came too close to my head with the scissors - It went swimmingly - It was a long time ago and I am still afraid of hairdressers, and cut my own fringe and grow the rest for cancer wigs

Do you prefer showers or baths?

Showers these days because the bath that was here in sheltered accommodation was only fit for an extremely short person who isn't claustrophobic, so I elected for a shower.
Why does being nice to rude people make the situation worse?
jacpod comments on Mar 1, 2018:
If I get grief from anyone I just walk away - quite often, its in a shop and athey will run after me sometimes especially if it was seen by a manager. I find walkig away the easiest way to deal with most abuse. I dot think it counts as a mental handicap as people can learn to be civil and respectful to others.
Temper Temper..
jacpod comments on Mar 1, 2018:
Only if someone picks on me first ,and then it depends on how severe they come - I have hyperacusis so don't want anyone shouting in my face I am pretty easy going - don't start fights.
Why do you try? Plain and simple. What keeps your clock ticking.
jacpod comments on Mar 1, 2018:
Oh just for that sensation of imagining I give a toss - actually most of what I do rather than coming here is cooking cleaning doing errands washing - ironing - an d thankfully art and craft work

Different path?
jacpod comments on Mar 1, 2018:
I would never have stayed on the Bamford Review of Adult Mental Health and Learning Disabilty so many years it came to nothing and the psychiatrists were so disrespectful of service users it was humiliating to be with them on any sub groups. I actually complained about a retired High Court Judge who had asked me sympathetic questions then blabbed what I had said about D.I.D to all his cronies. I faced him down and he apologised and withdrew but it was a battleground a lot of the time and we service users were serioulsly taken for ornamental mugs.

Do you think non-believers are less trusting?
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
I think we trust ourselves more - In terms of trusting others I go on the basis of "catch me once shame on you!"" catch me twice shame on me!" I think that I find the ending place of my trust for each person I meet and work out what I would trust them for .( Reading this I think I am not terribly trusting but fairly good at sussing out others weaknesses of being trustworthy}
What would it be like to be married to you?

Have any of you agnostics faced death and how did you deal with it?
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
I had a post on here somewhere about being at deaths door in 1952 from double pneumonia and measles the doctor was worried my relatives were worried and I was pretty much out of it and energy-less I remember being so wiped out that I couldn't swallow or talk taking the medicine was awful as it left my mouth so dry and I really think it would have been easy to slip away because I so didnt have energy to care. I have been in other near death situations -I haven't ever courted danger but it seems to dog me - but after that first big one I somehow got over the fear. I recognised death at an early age. now I am old I still recognise it and its a good reminder to be living.

If you had the chance to start over with someone, would you go back and meet them again or choose ...
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
I am actually choosing not to meet them at all my daughter is 50 in March and her father will be there so I'll see her some time of our choosing. Post birthday. I have had 3 long term relationships. the father of my two children, who left us to be with the guys; after five years . Someone I met who was in another commune and we worked together lived together for 8 years, but I couldn't have more children so we left each other amicably; and my current partner who lives above me in sheltered housing we have been together about 30 years.I was in love with the first two but got over it very fast did a mountain of crying then faced reality.

How do you feel about talking openly about athiesm
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
I don't feel the same about deciding what other people should and shouldn't do, but I do for myself think the less I say about belief, or lack of, the better when talking to other people. I have a a friend who says 'don't let them start!" I find it pointless talking to anyone about religion unless its a safe space like here because tis a waste of my time- I am not out to change anyones mind about anything, thats their mind their job. I think you missed something when you complained about him hating the idea of certainty that was his cue to you that god -fearers are certain that they are right so it was important for him to say that; so I don't understand you saying 'even though he is atheist -' Certainty is for gnostics. Agnostics and Atheists know at any one time that they don't have a god.
Who else is short and they are constantly reminded daily about their height?
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
I am 5 ft 1and a half inches the manual work I did was plastering and at least you don't get such a bad back if youre short but it is energetic work up and down ladders or scaffolding and if you're short you always get given the cupboards which is awful and only because NOBODY wants to do cupboards.

jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:

Is it possible to be in love with multiple people at once?
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
I nearly answered this as a yes but then realised the 'at once' clause I suppose its still a yes if youre in a like minded group & HAHA I am multiple you could love 9 at once 'theoretically' as I can't call them out to order.
What creative outlets do you enjoy?
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
I am surrounded by my own colourful artwork I made lots of shelves do woodwork and plastering and am always fiddling around with textiles, paper, love finding new, tools new methods, crazy ideas some I leave halfway through but its the process of making that I like - My hands seem to always be wanting something. to go at
Has anyone else attempted university in their 30's+ (after years out of school)?
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
Yes it was good! at Liverpool Uni they had a scheme for older people who hadnt been to uni before and we were half mature students give or take and half youngsters. It worked really well in tutorial group s for instance the young ones were shy and mostly had got through A levels by regurgitating what they learned so learning to think for themselves was a big challenge and we were there supporting them by showing the way. I have 3 degrees but haven't used them in what seems like another lifetime ago.

It certainly does.
Is it better to settle for a good relationship or wait for the best, even if it might never happen?
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
If you reframed that and asked instead "I have a good relationship how could we make it better" you might find yourself with further options.

Why all or nothing
jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
I tend to state my case and if people agree with me fine! if they don't also fine! I don't see the point in trying to get anyone "on my side" as if its a tug -of -war and someone has to 'win over' the other. I see , telling how it is for you personally; as an exchange. I am not interested in the ideas of a battle for the soul or winning hearts and minds just - this is me if its at all interesting welcome to it - if not - read on - plenty more posts.

jacpod comments on Feb 28, 2018:
Just loud ones; I found out that I have hyperacusis which means that I have some bottom end hearing loss so when my hearing kicks in its far too loud for me to cope with. I really want to scream when it happens (in shops mainly) its so immediate I seem to have no control over my response . Its part of getting old doh!

Have you ever bought a home?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I bought a home in London for £4,000 in 1971.the woman who had lived there had changed nothing since the house was new - It was a bit creepy because all of her stuff was till around including ration books from the war . It was also during the miners strike and the three day week so the electricity was always going off - It was a very mad time.
I'm struggling and looking for advice.
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
Most of my failed were pretty long lived & we parted on good terms so I never got to feeling that looking would be a hassle - I had plenty of women friends to go out with - If you have single women friends its a good place to start as you have someone with you - to trust to watch your back and give you hankies if it all goes a bit pear shaped I think 'failed' is a big word and that there must have been quite a lot of success in between the let downs might be a good idea to sit down and wonder what worked in the failed ones and see if you can spot a pattern .

Question for the ladies, does true love have age constraints?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
Well I am 70 this month so up to now there have been no age constraints for our true love - I'll let you know if I'm still alive in another 10 years if we are still in love.I am 5 years older than him.
Why do you reject the idea of religion?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I don't reject it I never embraced it - it has no meaning for me whatsoever -I don't reject it for other people, its a free country you may believe whatever you want .
Boyfriend is agnostic, I'm an atheist. How to cope with disagreements?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
If you want a real relationship you need to get to work on it and hammer out what you will cope with and what you won't - What are no go areas etc. If you just enjoy the hassle stop complaining and live with it till it sends you crazy and one of you leaves.
What's your biggest regret?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I don't really have regrets , I saw my life as just learning - I am sure that I had them fleetingly after relationship break up s etc. at the time but they faded away -and were replaced by a new challenge' I married a right eejit but life was kind and he mostly stayed out of my life _ I think I had quite a big life (in my own terms as I was up for anything anyone proposed) - I'll be 70 shortly and still no regrets nothing left undone that I wanted to do - which is just as well really ,
I'm hoping someone can shed some insight for me.
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
Silence is golden - sometimes you can say hey we don't want to do this old dance again do we? What is good that happened in your week - If he continues to throw barbs at you leave early - he probably needs the company and you might be able to negotiate your way through some no-go area propositions. For atheists - what makes you believe no deity exists?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
O 'oh stop right there! atheism isn't based on belief its based on lack of hard evidence A-gnostic means without gnosis (which is knowledge) cut it any way you like they are the same thing. and you can believe whatever you like its a free country!
What goes through your head when you see someone wearing a cross necklace?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:

Are you an open or closet agnostic/atheist, and why?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
Neither, because I'd like my lack of religious zeal to be a nothingness of no consequence to me or anybody else . I have no need to tell anybody what my opinion of a sky god is and I have no wish to hear about theirs. I wouldn't for example try to explain myself to somebody by telling them all the things I don't like we tend to make friends on positives "oh you like cheese on toast too! wow! come on! My treat!
How do you socialize?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I don't - I am not bothered if people have a god its not my problem as long as we can have a laugh together hoooray! Most people where I live now - N.Ireland, don't 'come out' because of memories of violence and 'The Troubles' thankfully I missed all that - But the wit and humour 'the craic' is good
So, if you're Agnostic what causes you to "sit on the fence?". Why are you not an Atheist?
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
Not sitting on any fence there actually isnt a fence to sit on both 'agnostic' and 'atheist' mean the same thing 'without a god!' I don't care what I call myself as long as the other person gets the message and doesnt have a go at converting me
I hope this wasn't posted already.
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I never have; they are a person same as me under the robes and I don't ever think there is ever something I 'should' do- I might want or choose to do something but 'shoulds' and 'oughts' are a bit near the bone for me . What's the strangest thing you witnessed personally
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
The' personally' bit made me think to share this - I was living in Ballintoy in a house halfway down a cliff all by itself which was above the carrick- a -rede rope bridge. At night it was really dark and we were in bed and my partner was telling me about the the Black Perceptory who were ultra strong Protestants who had massive drums - (our cottage was in a mixed area)- I woke up in the middle of the night to a huge booming and shook him awake and said 'the Black men are here.!'We didnt actually know what it was but woke in the morning and went for a walk and there were clothes abandoned everywhere at the lime kiln below - It had been a good clear site for a rave. (Apologies to Black Perceptory)
I haven't been around much. I've been very depressed.
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
Sorry to hear that ,I too slip in and out of this state of mind so I hope that its over soon for you wishing you weller.

I have been a bit rescued from this for about ten years as I came to live in sheltered accommodation Due to ageing and mental health worries) Its quite hard to actually get in to the building if you don't have a key so we aren't really bothered . People in here have different religions Northern Ireland is - either /or and I am living in a Catholic region. Most people keep it to themselves and there is a culture of getting on with neighbours as we need each other.
I was born into a family where my Father's side was Jewish, and my Mother's was Catholic.
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I didnt have a life changing moment as my parents were atheist and left it up to me to decide what I wanted to be - but if anyone knocked at the door they were let in to do the sales talk for jesus. I think in a way the relaxed approach was a good one when I am with people of religion I don't judge them unless they cross my boundary and start hard "youre gonna burn in hell "preaching - Im ok with J.W.s I let them come in and say what they want, they do preach but they always seem very vulnerable to me. the people that are sent out, seem to have unfixable problems .
It's like day 11 of being an atheist and everything going great.

jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
No I don't, I expect mutual respect to all from all , (unless they seriously don't merit it ) I wouldnt even start with 'earning' respect whats that all about - I have a personal mantra which is" I have enough, 'I am enough' I do enough" - that is self respect - I don't respect anyone else more than I respect myself
What's the strangest thing you witnessed personally
jacpod comments on Feb 27, 2018:
I was on the C.N.D action called 'Stop the City ! 'It was the day of reckoning when the City stops to count its loot and decide what the bank-rate is going to be - Up to then all our marches etc. had been cleared with the police, this time we took them by surprise turning up from all over the U.K dressed as ordinary people with handbags etc. we actuallly did stop the City; the police couldn't kettle enough wandering people to make it worthwhile. When I did find myself kettle I was one of five and we were all chirpy together nad were quickly let go bit that was the story all around us as we left them without a plan - We were pretty aimless and it was a nice day so to see the police be so completely bamboozled was just funny (boot on the other foot) The strangest thing I saw was that a handful of us got to the stockmarket (we didn't know what it was till someone told us) which was state of the art plate glass all the way through - They had decided to block their enormous glass doors which we weren't wanting to get through anyway and we just had this view of all these absolutely terrified stockbrokers making a line to push against the big plate Glass doors (The poor wee man at the door end was really seriously screwed by his own bosses) - we were just looking in at them and laughing and they got more terrified there were only about thirteen of us people on the outside, we ambled around and laughed there was a mum with two children in a pram and this enormous german man who was very tall who just laughed and kept pointing and laughing . When I left there we got to Leicester Square where there is a big MacDonalds and a young man was busily taking the sign down and no one could get to him as the crowd there had sheltered him and n o one could get through he was joyously pulling down the sign; I think at that time there was something hinky politically about McDonalds putting horsemeat into the burgers. The sad thing was that the Police kettled a man who was just on his way home from work and he had a heart attack so not all was well . It was the most powerful I have ever felt in my life because we did 'stop the city' and strangely I am pretty law abiding .
What makes a relationship work
jacpod comments on Feb 26, 2018:
Having a mutual sensitivity to the other persons ideas ideals, wants, needs ,I don't mean being a doormat, more just considerate of each others profile for living. My partner and I live in the same building but don't live together so if we get to a sticky place its a good time to make a good exit and each sleep on it and do apologies/post mortems later if they are still needed.Lovingkindness I think is a good ideal and to remember why you actually like each other. (But then thats just my recipe I am sure other couples have far more dynamism than we do)

About Yourself
jacpod comments on Feb 26, 2018:
I was the first woman plasterer in the U.K to complete a Topps course training. At the time I was living in a commune and we could do all the building jobs ourselves except for plastering - so I decided to train- I was the only woman in a skillcentre of 400 men - Later a group of us set up Women in Manual trades and one of the women who joined us as a plumber was Phillipa Roe the sister of the woman who streaked naked across the pitch at Lords because the cricket was boring .
Love?
jacpod comments on Feb 26, 2018:
I think that there might be a huge package of elements that go to make the spark of love between people . I think I would make a difference between 'Love' and 'In love ' in love to me always seems to be the mad bit where you can't wait to see them and you're a mix of emotions and its all a bit too much - I think the love comes in when you settle a bit and look at each other for real and become best friends as well as lovers, we do give off endorphins which accounts for a perceivable glow in people recently hooked up. then there are many obstacles and changes along the way if its going to be eternal love - BTW I don't think couple rows are not love I think the sorting out of who does was and how and why is really important - I have noticed that easy going people do it with the least amount of hysteria.
What was your favorite food as a kid?
jacpod comments on Feb 26, 2018:
Twiglets I don't know if you have them in the U.S. they are a twiggy looking knobbly straws which are baked in marmite they are crispy and very savoury - I just found out recently that they contain palm oil though. Some cereals I love dry like Jordans crunchy nut clusters.

To dispute or not to dispute?
jacpod comments on Feb 26, 2018:
As long as you know what your actual truth is, why not ? Its humanitarian - I don't argue about religion with anyone I'll listen if I want to give that person my time because I like them so I don't make religion a no go area but it might be nice to try to get them to talk about other things as well as maybe there are things you would like to know from him before he leaves you.
There is one thing that that I have learned that a person that wears their religion on their sleeve ...

You don't - You don't ever have to go there. I don't argue with people who have closed minds its a mugs game and no on ever wins and it does't help anything. -Be kind - leave them with their beliefs and have a yourself nice and easy life doing what you want to do- I don't see what anyone gets out of trying to change people - We all need to learn for ourselves or it isn't in our ownership.
