Times like this are when not particularly close friends and co workers become close and you learn who and who not to become closer to. Opening yourself up to others for help can be hard but the rewards of learning that there are people who will come through for you are awesome. I did 20 years in the military and found out not to discount anyone when the chips are down. Some of the most repugnant people where the ones that stood shoulder to shoulder with me when the going got rough. I have been open about being an atheist( not an easy thing here in the bible belt of Florida) and been willing to discuss in an even tempered manner with religious people about their beliefs and mine. That helps me sort out the people who really believe from the ones who believe their own self serving version of their religion. I have found that asking some good questions and their answers help me sort them out. If their answer is I don't know I need to read that section of the bible more, than I know that they are truly seeking answers to the unknown and probably someday come to the conclusion thats its all bullshit in their own time after enough study. If on the other hand they respond with a question of their own without answering the one I posed than It becomes evident that they are just using religion as a nice warm blanket to wrap themselves in to confirm their own desires and wants by claiming their invisible friend in the sky wants things to be their way. This second group will never disavow their religion because they use it to justify every thing they want weather its evil or not as long as its self serving.

Since I retired a couple of years ago I have found a happy medium to the camping bug. Every year my wife and I go out camping in the southwest for several months. It's amazing to see our country but it's wonderful to get home after an extended trip. The health benefits are great, I lose an average of two pounds each week we are out and the ability to unplug from the daily news and all the stress that goes with it are a wonder for our mental health. Another fun part is going over the pics from the trip and remembering all the great people you get to meet and amazing place we get to see. I personally have found the greatest resource for self educating about religion is the website called "the skeptics annotated bible" it lays out all the inconsistencies and contradictions in the bible and is easy to use as a research tool. It also has the Queran, and the book of Mormon broke down the same way. I spend about an hour a week on the site myself and have no problem holding my own in any discussion about religion with true believers.

When my father passed away he was cremated and three months later we had a celebration of life for him. It gave everyone a chance to arrange schedules to be there. We told stories about him and had a great BBQ and had a great time. No religion, no priest , just people that he knew and loved. I have been to many funerals in my years( military retiree) and this was the most comfortable and respectful one I have ever attended.

Was I a tad out of line?

I buy a fruit bearing tree and decorate it.. Grapefruit, Lemon tree, Navel orange. Plant it after new years and know that in the years to come I will enjoy its harvest
