I've been agnostic my whole life, but when I was younger I had that fear of "what if I'm wrong?". It didn't cost anything to believe, or to pray, so I left it at that. Besides, it could be true (I thought), and praying is a sort of meditation, so I thought what the heck(?).
At some point I thought, "if god's going to punish me for not believing, or doubting, even though I live a good life, then I don't want to be in his club anyway". No god would do that, and if he/she does, then I have no use for him/her.
It's my belief that being a good person benefits me as well as others, and that is what I try to do to the best of my ability. If there is a god, that is what god would want - do good, make amends when one falls short. What else can be expected of us?
