With a military budget of $622 Billion the Capitol can only be overrun with help from inside the Pentagon. That has been made exceptionally clear by recent hearings. I expect that at least one grand jury will be looking into this. Nor would I be surprised by a spate of courts martial. The other question to ask is: "With the Capitol under attack, why wasn't the President removed to an undisclosed, secure location?"

That happens millions of times a day. Far more issues are settled by the market than by violent, naked force.

My understanding is that they had worked out a defense based on questioning the Constitutionality of trying Trump since he had already left office. He insisted on basing his defense on his claim that the election was stolen. They refused to go along with that particular insanity and quit. BTW, not only is there historical precedent for impeaching and trying someone after they are out of office, the Constitution gives the Senate the right to bar Trump from office if he is convicted. That requires a trial, and to say he cannot be tried is to put him above the law. The Supreme Court ruled twice so far that Trump is not above the law.

Regarding the first one: Prosecutors are standing by. At this point the line looks something like: • SDNY for cases handed off by Mueller. • EDVa for cases handed off by Mueller. • US Atty DC for cases handed off by Mueller. • NY AG for financial crimes (e.g., bank fraud, tax fraud, insurance fraud, money laundering). • NY County DA batting cleanup on the overflow from Tish James (NY AG). • Fulton County, Georgia DA for election interference (find 11,780 votes). In light of January 6, DC may get to cut to the front of the line. So, what is everyone waiting on? I suspect they are waiting for the Senate to confirm the AG so he can green light the prosecutions and help decide the proper order for the cases. The states are apparently deferring to the feds for now.

Decent analysis except for the last 15 seconds. Saying the Democrats ran on nothing but bet Trump and don't know what to do now that they have united control of government is really absurd. They've had control of the committees in the Senate for less than two days.Bills are clearing the House already, and will clear the Senate soon. By the time they reach the White House Biden should be able to find time to sign them, in between the Executive Orders that he is working his way through. I would be willing to wager that 100 days in to this administration they will have a record to match or beat any administrations first 100 days, with the possible exception of FDR.

Just to be clear on what really happened regarding the January 6 rally and the attack on the Capitol: • The rally itself was planned by the organizers as a legitimate political rally. They had acquired the proper permits for a legit and peaceful rally. • They were never issued a permit to extend the rally beyond the original site. There was no permit for a march on the Capitol, and they were aware of and ok with this. • Before he spoke, Donald Trump was informed at least twice that there was no permit for a match to the Capitol. • Donald Trump ignored the advice, warnings, and pleas of the organizers when he sent the mob to the Capitol. Failure to secure a permit for the march on the Capitol may well be one of the least charges that Trump faces, but it is a very telling one.

Some state AG or local DA needs to file manslaughter charges against Fox (i.e., Murdoch and the top half dozen on air personalities) for the deaths they caused by knowingly spreading lies about COVID. The fact that Rupert Murdoch canceled his 89th birthday party in March of 2020 proves that they knew of the danger at least that early. Once the jury returns a guilty verdict, the FCC will have to, as a matter of public safety, pull the Fox licenses. If anybody even tries to argue that pulling the licenses was political, they can explain why they are ok with licensing a company to kill Americans.

It’s a lot more interesting than what was published here. The people who planned the official rally were putting together a legal and peaceful protest. They had a permit for exactly that. The permit was for just the rally, not a march, and definitely nothing at the Capitol. They told Trump this before he spoke and emphasized that they did not have a permit for a march so he should not encourage one. You know the rest of the story.

mcgeo52 comments on Jan 16, 2021:
While it is nice to have an adult in charge, and Biden is obviously a major improvement over Trump, I am not sure he realizes what he really needs to do. Biden has his work cut out for him. Stop the Pandemic. Stop (or significantly slow) climate change. Restore the economy. Ease racial tensions. Restore faith in government. Any one of those five would be a serious challenge in its own right, but I don't see it as an exaggeration to say that each of these five represent an existential threat to our country. We are at a moment in our nation's history not unlike when FDR took office in 1932. We came perilously close to becoming a fascist country at that time. If Gen. Smedley Butler had been any less of a patriot, there would have been a coup staged against FDR, and it probably would have succeeded. The people supporting Trump are hurting, in many cases to the point of desperation. They have not only seen the middle class decimated by Reaganomics and neoliberalism, in many cases they are the no-longer-middle-class-victims of those policies. The good news for Biden is that if he does the right thing in restoring the economy, it will go a long way toward easing racial tensions and restoring faith in government. The bad news for Biden is that it means he will have to show the same kind of courage and leadership that FDR showed when he turned his back on "his people" (i.e., the Oligarchs) and did what was right for the greatest number of Americans. Biden is going to have to stop being a centrist, corporatist, neoliberal, and become a populist working for the people. If he doesn't do that we will in all likelihood end up with someone in four years who is smart enough to pull off a coup.
