We have the technological ability to completely replace fossil fuel within less than four years with plant based fuel. @Arouet, did you even read my responses? You say, "In your two posts you have failed to refute a single one of the points I raised." Your point: The amount of energy required to make a small amount of useful product is not sustainable. My response: Apparently you don't understand exothermic. Your point: The amount of biomass required to make a small amount of useful product is not sustainable. My response: As for the amount of biomass required, less than half of the fallow farmland in the US could grow enough hemp to produce all of the petroleum products we are currently using. Your point: Finally, if the goal is is to fight climate change, then this is headed in the opposite direction. Burning the "coke", which by definition is mostly carbon, will create huge carbon emissions. My response: The coke being burned is from the biomass. The carbon comes from atmospheric carbon, not fossil carbon. BTW, you still haven't answered my question as to why you would use liquid hydrogen? As for the allegation of an ad hominem attack, I did not cross any line you had not already crossed with your statement, "You need to brush up on your organic chemistry." You have offered no evidence refuting anything I posted, just half baked objections. This is why I rarely bother arguing with egotistical know-it-alls. P.S. I have a low tolerance for assholes.

@Arouet, why would you use liquid hydrogen? Would you use liquid natural gas? Get real. As for the water produced, it would be 9 times the mass of the hydrogen, and substantially more than a trickle. This is actually a preferable alternative to reverse osmosis for desalinization.

@Arouet, you need to study basic science. The coke being burned is from the biomass. The carbon comes from atmospheric carbon, not fossil carbon. If you don't get that point, please don't waste our time with your comments. "The amount of biomass and energy required to make a small amount of useful product is not sustainable." Apparently you don't understand exothermic. As for the amount of biomass required, less than half of the fallow farmland in the US could grow enough hemp to produce all of the petroleum products we are currently using. I have seen the analysis of the sludge, and it can be run through refineries just like a medium light, sweet crude. Friends who work at local refineries in Southern California have confirmed this. The studies I have seen show this to be competitive with fossil petroleum at $45 per barrel. I have discussed this with my Representative, Alan Lowenthal (D-CA47), and also a family friend who served on the Texas Railroad Commission. Both have told me that politics are all that prevents us from doing this. BTW, in case you are not familiar with the Texas RR Commission, they set the price for West Texas crude.

re: Fossil fuels, see my comment on this post. re: Batteries, there is actually a very elegant solution to large scale storage that uses our current electrical grid and renewable energy. I don't know if you are familiar with pump storage. That is a system involving to sizable bodies of water close by each other but at significantly different elevations. When there is demand for power the water is run from the upper level to the lower through turbines which turn generators. When there is excess power on the grid, the generators become motors and the turbines become pumps, moving the water back up to the upper level. As of now, this is the largest capacity method for storing energy. It has a maximum efficiency of about 65%, and the number of sites where it will work is very limited. I would propose an alternative. When there is excess power, draw hydrogen out of water at the lower elevation and run it through a pipeline to the higher location. When there is excess demand, run the hydrogen through fuel cells at the higher elevation. Then run the water down hill through turbines which turn generators. This is effectively a dual stage (chemical and kinetic) pump storage system that is highly scalable. The maximum efficiency of this system is over 70% with the right conditions. Right conditions include the most efficient fuel cells and a proper catalyst for the water the hydrogen is to be removed from. It just happens that the naturally occurring salts in Pacific Ocean sea water are over 95% as effective as the best catalyst created in a lab. BTW, in case you overlooked one point here, this system also provides fresh water at altitude. I have read more than one report saying that future wars will be fought over water. The only problem I hav with those reports is their verb tense. Every war that Israel has fought has been for arable land (i.e., land with water).

@Antidronefreeman, this is patent BULLSHIT!!! Obama had a majority in both houses of Congress when he first took office and could have rammed through any legislation he wanted. He insisted on trying to create a bi-partisan consensus even though the Republicans were committed to complete obstruction of everything he tried. Then there is also the fact that, if you knew half as much as you think you do about our government, you would know that all Obama had to do was sign a declaration to assume more power than Hitler ever had. He didn't. If I had been President when Mitch McConnell pulled his treasonous bullshit about Merrick Garland, I would have called Turtleface into the Oval Office and explained the situation to him, thusly: "You may disrespect me all you want, but you will not disrespect the Office of the President, or the people of this country who elected me as President. Per the Constitution, I am the executive of this government. That makes it my job to see that the people in this government do their job. That includes you. My job is to nominate a Supreme Court Justice. Your job is to hold hearings and a vote. You will do your job.You have 30 days to hold your hearings and vote, or I will use the power you gave me when you passed the NDAA, and declare you an enemy combatant. Let me be perfectly clear, I am not telling you how to vote, or even how to run your hearing, but that is your job and you will do it or go to Guantanamo." Obama could have easily done that, and it would not have been an empty threat. He didn't. You are full of shit. Q.E.D.

@silverotter11, if Pence goes first then Trump appoints a new VP. That is correct up to that point, where it gets interesting. The VP must be approved by a majority of each house. Nacy Pelosi can take the Merrick Garland page out of McConnell's playbook and refuse to vote on anybody she doesn't like. If the new VP is not approved before Trump leaves, Pelosi becomes President. So, Nancy can give Donnie and Mitch their choice of anyone on her short list, or having her replace Trump.

Apparently most people are unaware of Pence's background. His brother has been very involved in Russia for quite a while. He was the VP of Cummins in charge of Russian operations. A vast majority of the diesel engines used in Russia are made in the Cummins factory there. I cannot say that Pence's brother did anything at all illegal, but he was functioning at a very high level in a country run by a mob. Manafort was in deep debt (millions of dollars) to the Russian mob when he volunteered to run Trump's campaign for no pay. He is the one who set up the choice of Pence as VP, and then used Pence as the point man to get the party platform on Ukraine changed. And, as noted earlier, Pence was the one lying to cover for Flynn. Maybe Pence really is the squeaky clean Boy Scout, but if it waddles, quacks, swims, and lays eggs, I would not bet on it being a hamster.

@Mofo1953, and Hillary could have won if she had listened to the Sanders supporters who tried to warn her that she was losing key states, and wanted to help her. She was so upset with them for even challenging her "right" to the nomination that she would not even listen to them, much less accept their help. As I said, Worst. Possible, Candidate. Her damned sense of entitlement was even worse than Trumps; he never expected to win. How bad do have to be to lose to Donald tRump? I still blame HRC, DWS, and the DNC for not letting America have the President they wanted and needed. It is on their heads whether you acknowledge that or not.
