We obviously need campaign reform. I do not support publicly financed campaigns. Here is the content of a note I posted on Facebook: Public funding of election campaigns does to campaigns what the ACA did to health care. It puts money from our pockets into the pockets of the oligarchs, in the case of elections this would mean paying tax dollars to the corporations that own the radio and TV stations and the cable channels. The problem is the money in politics. Just throwing taxpayer money at the problem doesn't make it go away. We need to take a different approach and take the money out of the equation. Start by looking at where the money goes, election campaigns. And 90%+ of that money goes to advertising on radio, TV and cable. Those media are all licensed for the public good. What public good is being served by subverting our democracy? We need to enforce the existing laws and regulations regarding equal time for candidates and ballot measures, specifically 47 USC 315 and 47 CFR 73.1941 for broadcast and 47 CFR 76.205 & 76.206 for cable. Once we have done that we institute an income tax of 110% of the gross income received by any licensed media for political advertising, direct, indirect, any and all. Then enforce 47 USC 317 and 47 CFR 73.1212(e) for full disclosure of who pays for political ads. Will this completely solve the problem? No, the fundamental problem is human nature. But it will level the playing field. And we don't have to amend the Constitution, just enforce the laws we have and add one very limited tax.
