@PontifexMarximus, at this point I doubt that would even come close to working. Liberty University, founded by Jerry Falwell, had Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump each speak on campus before the primaries in 2016. I encourage you to find the speeches on YouTube and watch them. Bernie comes across as someone knowledgeable of the scriptures, respectful of the audience, and basing his platform on what Christ taught. Trump, on the other hand, starts by quoting from "Two Corinthians." It got worse from there. Of course, Falwell Junior gave the school's formal endorsement to Trump. Before I come across as completely pessimistic and negative, I would note that, at their convention in Dallas earlier this year, the Southern Baptists officially began distancing themselves from the Republican Party.

To be honest, there is some debate as to whether or not tRump is an idiot.
mcgeo52 replies on Sep 9, 2018:
@zeuser, there is a real difference. Morons are more intelligent than idiots. If that alone were not reason to side with Murdoch, I would also make the following argument: Donald Trump is obviously mentally challenged. However he is so brilliant when it comes to manipulating and conning people that I would have to classify him as a savant. There are no moron savants, only idiot savants. Trump is a fucking idiot. @glennlab, the irony of the fascistization of the Rethugs, as you so correctly named it, is that it was started by the Goldwater wing of the Republican Party. It has gone so far that Goldwater would be embarrassed to run as a Republican today. Remember, Hillary Clinton is an unapologetic Goldwater Girl.

@glennlab, the JBS was co-founded by Fred Koch, Charles and David's father in 1958, and help lay the foundation for where the right has built. The real move did not start until after Goldwater lost in '64. And while the Koch's have been major players, they were far from alone. The move was greatly accelerated when Reagan threw out the fairness doctrine.

Nike admen *had* to have known where their Colin Kaepernick advertisement would go.
mcgeo52 replies on Sep 9, 2018:
The ad was a very calculated move. Nike needed to bump their credibility with minorities. I'd be surprised if more than 10% of their market before the Kaepernick ad was tRump supporters. You give up less than 10% of your market to strengthen your overall brand, and create buzz worth at least three or four orders of magnitude what you paid for the ads. Brilliant move from a business standpoint.

@glennlab, but it is not just the Republican Party that has moved right. The have dragged the rest of the country with them. Eisenhower's '56 platform is too far to the left for him to get nominated by the Dems. If you doubt that, read the platform; it is slightly to the left of Bernie Sanders.

@glennlab, tRump has moved way beyond where Reagan ever hoped to go. We are looking at a number of factors. Two key people to watch are Pence and Ryan. If you see both of them resign or be removed from office, expect tRump to resign very shortly thereafter. Don't be shocked if it happens before the end of the year. The reason they will be gone is that Robert ...
mcgeo52 replies on Sep 7, 2018:
@Charlene, if the Dems take the House in November, the Speaker in January will almost certainly be a Dem so Ryan's retirement is a nonissue. I expect Pence to resign or be arrested before tRump resigns. I said I have a scenario where it actually makes sense that the Dems would choose a Republican as Speaker. Buckle up. For starts it would have to be a moderate Republican that they could work with. There are two reasons for choosing such a person: 1) This would be an act of statesmanship aimed at healing our country. I know it sounds too radical, but such things have happened. 2) What the new President needs to do is have a full investigation into the 2016 election. If there was fraud, the President needs to issue an Executive Order declaring the fraud. This means that the validity of anything tRump did as "President" could be challenged and overturned. That would include all of his appointments, and everything done by all of his appointees. It would also include all of his judicial appointments. If a Dem were to do that, no matter how right and legal it would be, there would be blood in the streets. A Republican might actually be able to pull it off.
