What are your honest thoughts on astrology?
mcgeo52 comments on Aug 3, 2019:
A different take than my other answer here: A friend of mine has been an astrologer for decades and is certain that it works. She had even developed a system which she believed would allow her to predict events accurately enough that she would be able to profit from them, although I'm still under nondisclosure and not allowed to say which form of gambling was involved. She had worked for years to perfect her system and was convinced she had a better than 90% success rate. She hired me to program the system and further test it. I told her up front I doubted it would work, and that she was basically wasting her money. She challenged me to take the job and try to prove her wrong. It quickly became apparent to me that her "successes" had come from modifying the system to fit the data. Every time the data changed, the system required further modification. After over a year of paying me for some fairly sophisticated programming (i.e., over 8k lines of JavaScript), she ran out of money and ended the project. She still believes that with a little more effort we could have made it work. I stand by initial statement that it was never going to work.
What are your honest thoughts on astrology?
mcgeo52 comments on Aug 3, 2019:
I had a very interesting conversation with a friend about this yesterday. We both agree that astrology, as currently practiced is superstitious claptrap. However, he has been doing some research, and this is where it gets interesting. He has not finished the research to the point that he is ready to publish it, but I do have his permission to share the general outline. Basically he is working on the hypothesis that astrology, as originally practiced, was used more for predicting variations in climate. These would be caused by things such as solar flares. Those, in turn, would be caused by what would be analogous to tidal forces within the sun. the forces would be caused by the gravitational pull of the planets in much the same way that the moon exerts gravitational pull responsible for tides on earth. Studying the relative positions of the planets over time could possibly reveal the pattern in weather caused the sun's cycles driven by the gravitational forces of the planets, and allow for reasonably accurate prediction of climatic conditions. I find it an interesting hypothesis.
