I haven't much to say about myself. Childfree, nonsmoker (but 420-friendly--I just hate tobacco smoking), GenX, lesbian, Doctor Who fan since about 1983. I like to do active things as often as I can. I have narcolepsy. I'm sure I'll update with more.

At what age did you stop believing in traditional love as perpetuated in music / movies / mainstream...
memorylikeasieve comments on Sep 30, 2018:
Aeons and ages and thingee ago. And I keep getting shown that it's not a thing no matter how much I want it to be.
When did you start drinking coffee and why?
memorylikeasieve comments on Oct 31, 2018:
I was the same way--i liked the smell far more than the taste. Then my now ex-gf introduced me to mocha frappuchinos about 10 years ago and I was hooked. Then it spread to other ways of drinking coffee. It's a good pick-me-up when I'm feeling especially narcoleptic, but it's not too kind to my insides, so I don't have it very often any more.
Which toy(s) would sum up your childhood?
memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 7, 2018:
I was born in 74, so I had things like Tinker Toys, Lincoln Logs, LEGOs, etc, but also Barbie dolls, Cabbage Patch dolls, and about a hundred Star Wars toys. I had a wee Fisher Price record player and also the cassette player. When I look back on it, it's interesting the kind of technological advances I saw in my childhood. My favorite toy, though, was an electronics kit. Just a 'breadboard', a tonne of wires and diodes/transistors/etc, light bulbs, switches, dials, and instructions. I will say this about my parents, they weren't at all sexist when it came to kids' toys.

I dunno, but I don't want opioids for my joint hypermobility pain. They don't do much other than make me puke. It does, however, make me wonder what other meds they'll go after once they think they're done 'fixing' this 'crisis.'
How important do you think our buying power is?
memorylikeasieve comments on Apr 28, 2018:
I don't think mine really makes any kind of a difference. Sure, I shop local when I can swing it, but that isn't very often. Too broke to really expect my tiny purchases to even be noticed. Also, I don't boycott.
Well, I did a dumb thing.

Who remembers those awful cheap plastic masks for Halloween masks and costumes?
memorylikeasieve comments on Oct 18, 2018:
I remember them. They were banned for pretty much that exact reason--you can't see a thing while wearing them and some kid probably wandered out in front of a car. For ages after that, all that was allowed was face paint. They've brought masks back, now, but they're loads better.
Just a question to the Star Wars fans out there.

I've asked this question in a different forum, and the answers were interesting.
memorylikeasieve comments on Sep 28, 2018:
I have no idea. It's been way too long, I'm way too ugly and socially inept, and I've no clue if lesbian dating has any similarity to hetero dating. I realise as I type this that I'm out to sea on this, too. ?

What is your go to beverage of choice?
memorylikeasieve comments on Jul 30, 2018:
Caffeine. Any kind. Coffee, tea, soda, all good. Though my relationship with coffee is a difficult one. If my narcolepsy meds are working, I can get away with having mild caffeine. If not, it's coffee all day, especially if I have important things to do.
How do you handle people who tell you that they will keep praying for you?
memorylikeasieve comments on Apr 28, 2018:
For me it really depends on why they're saying that. If it's because I'm sick, I usually just smile and say something like 'thanks--I'll shore that up with some NyQuil/pain meds/etc.' or 'thanks--now, if you'll excuse me, I've got doctors to talk to.' They mean well, for the most part, so I'm not gonna make a scene. On the other hand, I've heard them say this because I'm an agnostic, and because I'm gay. In these cases, they sincerely think it'll get their god to /change/ me, and I have no tolerance for that. If they think my lack of belief or my sexuality are things that are fundamentally wrong with me, then there's no reason to mollycoddle them. If I'm in a decent mood, they'll get a 'please don't, you'll be wasting your time,' and if I'm not, I've been known to really give them a piece of my mind. I've wanted to slap a few of them, but thankfully it's never actually come to that.

memorylikeasieve comments on Jun 25, 2018:
No. I stopped trusting my parents ages ago and never went back. They did nothing to earn it back, either. Especially my mother. They're both dead, now, but while they were alive I did not trust them at all.

memorylikeasieve comments on Oct 20, 2018:
I'm glad I got the 'cultural' thing out of my system when I was 13 in 1990 (I think)--I went to parties that year as a 'gypsy' fortune-teller. After that it was all monsters or steampunk or, like this year, some good ol cyberpunk body horror. I don't miss cultural or historical costuming at all. I don't have any desire to implement it. I find it boring, uncreative, and, yes, offensive.

How would you explain humanity to a visiting alien?
memorylikeasieve comments on Apr 12, 2018:
I'd tell them that humanity is young. It's only just got started, still hitting a lot of stumbling blocks and figuring out how to get over them and how to avoid future ones. I'd tell them that humanity is capable of terrible cruelty and amazing kindness. That it can destroy and create. That it hates and it loves. But with all that, it still isn't done growing. It deserves a chance to find out what it'll become, just like any sapient species. ...And I'd probably say all that with stirring, inspirational music playing in my phone because of course I fuckin would. ?

Does something someone has done in one area of their life, negate something they've done in another?
memorylikeasieve comments on Apr 5, 2018:
I see this all the time on the HP Lovecraft forum I'm in. He was a xenophobe from a very insular New England community in the early 20th century and some of the things he wrote are egregiously racist. However, he was also a genius and invented an entire genre of literature whose impact can be seen far and wide. As we become more and more able to dig up dirt on folks, I've come to a decision. Essentially every human being is a terrible person. Everyone has done something that someone, somewhere, is going to find offensive. Sometimes it's clear and obvious, like with Lovecraft. Other times, it's a matter of interpretation. But if I'm going to stop following the work of every person who did/said awful things, I would literally have to throw everything out. I have to draw a line and consider things like time period and severity of what they did/said. I will continue to read and positively discuss Lovecraft's fiction while acknowledging that his racism, while common for the time, is still inexcusable. However I will never knowingly watch anything involving Kevin Spacey ever again. These are just my examples, though.

Can you share your experience with stock market?
memorylikeasieve comments on Apr 26, 2018:
My dad and my uncle set up a hypercomplex network of stocks and mutual funds and all this other arcane stuff and then bequeathed it to my brother and me. Neither of us have even an inkling of how any of it works so, rather than try to touch it ourselves at all and end up investing badly and bankrupting ourselves, we have trained professionals at the bank handle it. That is the beginning and end of my knowledge of it. It's not, in my opinion, something amateurs should handle unless they're really got at not only the maths but at speculation.

memorylikeasieve comments on Jul 1, 2018:
They both suck. I used to get so cold that no amount of layers and such would even make a noticeable difference. I'd be wrapped up in a sweater and a blanket, have a space heater going, be drinking hot tea and still be so cold that I was in pain. Nowadays even looking at warm clothing makes me sweaty and vaguely nauseated. So, yeah, I hate both.

What's the worst job you've had? Why?
memorylikeasieve comments on Mar 27, 2018:
Production office in a plastic thermoforming plant. They made clamshell cases and whatnot. There was a constant particle haze in the air and I went home every day with a terrible headache. The office had only just enough ventilation to make it not lethal, and there was a literal 15-degree temperature difference between one side and the other. They measured it. I was cold all the time anyway, and was stuck on the cold side and they refused to let me move to the warm side. So picture it--it's June in Illinois. I'm wearing layers, I have a space heater, I'm drinking hot tea, and I'm still blue with cold. I step out of the office and my glasses immediately fog up because it is literally 120 degrees on the production floor. Again, they measured it. To top it off, I'm in a constant somnolent daze because of undiagnosed narcolepsy, and I had to stay at that job for over a year because if I quit, the abuse at home would have gotten even worse. I was miserable.

That is a lot of questions. I probably won't remember all of them, but here goes. I got on with my dad a lot better than with my mother, but even that wasn't too well when you step back and look at it. I don't know what role he felt he had but to me it seemed like he was playing peacekeeper--just enforcing my mother's crazy in order to keep things quiet. I really think he should have divorced her because she was abusive to him, too, but they were of a generation that Just Didn't Do That. That said, I know his sense of humour and love of technology kinda rubbed off on me. As to marrying someone like my dad, I'm a lesbian so probably not.
