Folks, we REALLY nned to be talking about this.
memorylikeasieve comments on May 28, 2018:
Okay. How? Where does the average person with no money, no power, and no connexions even start? We scream at our 'elected' officials until we're blue in the face only to be told point blank that they aren't listening and don't care. We cast ballots only for those votes to be ignored. What's the next step?
Just a question to the Star Wars fans out there.

Probably the same way anything else got from one planet to another--hyperdrive. I get the feeling mass isn't much of an issue as hyperspace has its own physics.

Have you ever been a victim of gaslighting?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 27, 2018:
For years from my mother. I moved out and she would phone me all the time and continue it. I only escaped when she died.
I’m witnessing the most phenomenal thunder storm I’ve ever seen in my 50 years on the planet.
memorylikeasieve comments on May 27, 2018:
It's one of the few things I liked about driving through S. Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana over a couple days during the summer--there were some gorgeous storms. Then we hit a deer and ended up marooned in Wyoming for a week and that ended my love affair with the scenery really quick. But I still love the storms I saw. We don't get them much in the PNW.
What do you usually listen to in the car?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 27, 2018:
Music, almost always. Or Google maps giving me directions. Or any people I'd have with me. But usually music.
What Do You Do When You Are Sad?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 27, 2018:
If I'm just feeling a bit squashed, I look at pictures of smart cars--seriously, those things are so wee and cute they make me giggle every time. If I'm sad enough to cry, I have some sativa, which gets me out of emotion mind enough to then figure out why I'm crying and what, if anything, can be done and when. It helps immensely for the depressive episodes I'd occasionally have. If it's just a shitty brain chemistry day, at least then I know I can just take a nap or find a distraction like reading a book or watching a movie until it kind of blows over.
Would you have a sign hung up like this to keep missionaries away?

Fat.
memorylikeasieve comments on May 27, 2018:
Couldn't tell ya. I was considered ugly when I was thin, and am considered ugly when I'm not thin. They'd say it to my face. When I'm out with friends, strangers speak to them and not to me despite my attempts to be personable. Sure I've never been assaulted or even wolf-whistled or catcalled, but being considered either invisible or too ugly to even look at ain't no picnic, either. The only time people's eyes don't slide right off me is when I'm wearing something 'outlandish'.

Something is not worth considering if you don't have someone else to take it into consideration .
memorylikeasieve comments on May 27, 2018:
I kind of agree. After a while doing things alone just gets dull and depressing. People seem to think there's something wrong with you or that you have to 'learn' to be better just because you want to do something with other people.

I believe a quality and successful long-term romantic relationship is built upon a strong foundation...
memorylikeasieve comments on May 26, 2018:
I'm leery of it. This dude I knew who thought we were closer of friends than we actually were tried to convince me to take it further on the grounds that one leads to the other and it was how his parents got together so it followed the he and I should, too. I was only just learning my own sexuality and was still very isolated in an abusive parental environment which resulted in my having very few contacts with the outside world, so I had to keep hedging around the subject for years, which got really stressful. Kinda left me a little weird about people insisting on a specific course a relationship 'should' take.

Any roleplayers or board gamers out there? I am totally both. What do you play?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 26, 2018:
Aye. Though a couple friends and I just had to drop a Strange game we were in because the GM flaked out on us too many times. I collect Lovecraft-themed board and card games and have a huge trunk full of them, though it's practically an event to play some of them. ?

Okay, here's a question. How much of the time do you have a song playing in your head?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 25, 2018:
Earworms are pretty common. What annoys me is when I have a song in my head with lyrics that I can't completely remember and I'm in no position to look it up at that moment. ?

I can't speak for anyone else, but to me, signs of ageing mean I'm that much closer to death, which is something I'm definitely not ready for.
Ahh.
memorylikeasieve comments on May 25, 2018:
I did something similar when I escaped my narcissist mother. Really badly. Because I had no identity other than what she forced on me. My ex-girlfriend and her friends had to weather what was essentially a second adolescence. None of them speak to me any more and on the one hand I don't blame them, but on the other hand I do kind of resent how they labelled me a lazy drama queen, which only made things worse for me.

What are your favourite shop names?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 24, 2018:
The PNW is full of em:. There's a liquor store called 'Pint Defiance', the joke being there's a locality nearby called Point Defiance. A weed shop called 'Two Five Trees' after Tacoma's 253 area code, I'm sure there's more, but my fave isnt a pun but funny nonetheless, an obstetrics service called 'Baby Catchers.'
What are your thoughts on standing for the anthem?

memorylikeasieve comments on May 23, 2018:
I can't find it, but I don't doubt it's there. There are some real head cases wandering about on this site, who don't seem to realise that crystals and chakras and organic this and homeopathic that are exactly as effective as praying--ie, not at all. Does this mean there's something wrong with me?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 22, 2018:
Yes. It's completely normal. You grieve however you grieve and it's nobody's place to tell you you're doing it wrongly. I bawled when my father died, partly because I knew I'd miss him and partly because it was the first time a close relative died. My grandparents were very old and very ill when they died and it was sad but expected, so I didn't mourn much. But my father's second cancer spread so quickly he was gone in a matter of weeks and I knew it was because he gave up. He'd been dreading it for as long as I could remember because it was how his father died. Conversely, I felt only a brief stab of emotion when I heard my mother died. She was an abusive narcissist and I had never felt close to her. I've never doubted either of my reactions.
How do you handle being gawked at by either complete strangers or just people you could know?

Do people become more bigoted as they age?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 22, 2018:
I've found I've been getting more liberal as I get older. I used to have some terrible opinions about poor people and LGBTQ (I thought I was straight) and was afraid of Muslims. Or maybe I just grew up.

OK babyboomers, how many of you are like me and thinks todays chart topping music really sucks ...
memorylikeasieve comments on May 21, 2018:
GenXer here, and I think music declined after the 80s. Sure a lot of 80s stuff was slick and synthy, but it still had some kind of musicianship to it, and a kind of emotion that Reagan and Thatcher era Cold War politics was pretty much directly responsible for, a kind of perfect storm of economic optimism and political pessimism, the last gasps of the U.S./Soviet space programmes and the beginnings of the information age that will never be recreated. It frothed with energy and ideas and anger. I miss it, especially now.
This has proven time and time again to be so true.
memorylikeasieve comments on May 21, 2018:
Oh, for fuck's sake. This has only been debunked numerous times. There is absolutely nothing true about it.
How do people feel about deleting or rewriting certain words in old books?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 21, 2018:
I think they should just run a disclaimer on page one that's kind of like what Warner Bros. does with their old cartoons. Something to the effect that there are words and images that can be offensive but that this was what people wrote/said/etc in the past and the past should be faced and learnt from, not hidden.
Tea or coffee?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 21, 2018:
Both, though I'm regrettably having to stay away from coffee if I have to go anywhere that day, as it really makes me poop. A lot. ?
What's in your coffee?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 21, 2018:
I miss coffee, but I don't miss ending up on the shitter for the rest of the day. When science figures out how to solve that problem, I'll go back to brewing it nice and strong and then adding some milk and some stevia which, last I checked, coes not alter the caffeine content at all, so I don't know why y'all are bitching about it. ?

If a woman wants an abortion should the father have a right to keep the child?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 20, 2018:
Maybe she *sporfle* 'knew what she was getting into...' *snrrrk* '...when she had...' *heeheeheehee* 'THE SEX.'. AHAHAHA... ????... Haaa... 'the sex...'. That's funny.... Okay, calming down. Maybe she did know a pregnancy was likely, but no-one can know what health implications it can have for a woman until it happens--family history is a poor indicator and a lot of people who were adopted don't know their family history at all and are going into it blind. 9 months of medical trouble that could permanently ruin one's health or even kill one is a bit much to ask, I think.
I have a question for the women on this site.
memorylikeasieve comments on May 20, 2018:
No personal experience (dyscalculia kinda gets in the way of such things) but I dated a woman who was an astrophysics student. She was (and probably still is) very much an 'I do what I want and fuck society if it tries to tell me no,' type, so she really didn't care that she was often the only woman in any given class. The fact that she was so matter-of-factly stubborn about staying visible amidst the guys was probably one reason she succeeded at it. That and she was very good at astrophysics.

memorylikeasieve comments on May 20, 2018:

Why Liberals Aren’t as Tolerant as They Think - POLITICO Magazine
memorylikeasieve comments on May 20, 2018:
I'm a liberal but I never laboured under the illusion of tolerance. There are things that should not be tolerated, like homophobia, white supemacy, etc. I will admit that I am prejudiced against people who espouse these things. Saying this is as bad as those who are prejudiced against sexualities or races is disingenuous at best. People choose to be racist, sexist, etc, and I am free to fault them for their choices.
Why are the school shooters almost always young boys?
memorylikeasieve comments on May 20, 2018:
People need to stop trying to humanise these creatures. There is just something fundamentally defective about them if they can decide to pick up a gun and blow people to bits with no remorse other than regretting that they got caught. They can watch the life drain out of a human or an animal with no apparent effect on their psyche. They are not mentally ill, they are defective. At the risk of sounding like a hypocrite, I think they should just be put down like a rabid dog. They forfeited their humanity the moment they chose to kill for vengeance or whatever it is they're after. Soldiers come back from combat with PTSD, and one of the reasons they do is because they had to kill other humans. I have never seen any evidence that these school shooters experience anything even remotely similar. The survivors will have nightmares and flashbacks and the perpetrators will stare with dead shark eyes and admit they'd do it again which, to me, is a sign of an irretrievably broken mind.

memorylikeasieve comments on May 20, 2018:

Homelessness
memorylikeasieve comments on May 19, 2018:
When I lived in Minnesota I was able to use the state-funded healthcare if I declared zero income. Not a problem because I kept losing jobs due to poor health. So I ended up in a homeless shelter for three months while figuring out aid programmes and having a differential diagnosis done. All I can say is I'm glad I did this during what passes for late spring there, else I'd have frozen solid during the hour every day that they toss everyone out so they can clean the place. It was very educational.
