What are the best come-backs someone pushing flat earth science?
p-nullifidian comments on Jul 17, 2018:
Wow! I’ve heard of flat earthers, but never met one. As a skeptic I’m inclined to believe that no one is really a flat earther, and that they’re only doing this for attention. How do they explain the navigational patterns of aircraft and ships transitting the oceans? They always use great arc circle navigation. Even though both cities are very close to the same latitude, a plane or ship leaving San Francisco headed for Tokyo never heads west, but always heads towards Alaska following the curvature of the earth to save time/fuel, thus proving that a straight line is never the shortest distance between two points on the sphere!
The church should stay the HELL out of politics. [yahoo.]

Now you're sounding like a conservative Republican ... from a previous age! ;-) "I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in "A," "B," "C" and "D." Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them." Senator Barry Goldwater, Jr.

Which is actually an excellent lead-in to a concern I’ve had for many years with Second Amendment rights purists. Do we honestly think that it’s a good thing that everyone will be walking around with advanced weaponry of the future? Is possession of Star Trek style hand phasers by every citizen a net positive? Do you want to live in a world where our next-door neighbor, who gets wasted once in a while and with whom we sometimes quarrel, possesses a weapon that could vaporize us without a trace? We should all consider that when the Second Amendment was written the weaponry was, to say the least, less lethal. https://youtu.be/SJMbxZ1k9NQ

Ethics in a pandemic.
p-nullifidian comments on Oct 13, 2020:
"Forced" immunization? Perhaps not, but we already have coerced vaccination in many quarters, as schools won't allow children to attend who haven't been vaccinated against a number of diseases not nearly as deadly as the Coronavirus. Parents whose child is able to receive the vaccine are left with the choice to home school or get their kids inoculated. Natural (without vaccines) herd immunity may be a pipe dream. Smallpox existed for thousands of years killing hundreds of millions before a vaccine was discovered centuries ago. But it took a vast, WHO sponsored effort to inoculate the planet and eradicate this scourge. COVID's just getting started, as we're already seeing signs of a second wave. The Spanish flu had 4 waves. Ethics are inevitably situational but often come down to numbers. Here it seems to me that the needs of the many [compromised individuals who are unable to be vaccinated] outweigh the needs of the one [who, on some principle, refuses to be vaccinated]. Once a vaccine is widely available, until this disease is eradicated, those who refuse it should live like the Amish, isolated from the rest of society.

Whether it be gunshot wounds, overdoses, strokes, embolisms, or a sore throat, ERs always prioritize, based on the severity of the condition. If someone is code blue due to an overdose on Ivermectin and they happen to out-prioritize the gunshot victim whose wounds are not life-threatening and is in stable condition, I would say that is an effective and appropriate prioritization. That people are overdosing on anything, whether it be OxyContin or Ivermectin, is a significant problem in this country, however no one’s forcing them to open their bottle of pills. With just about any substance (including alcohol), each of us has a limit—a point at which we can no longer remain breathing. Mondale was a true statesman. Awesome share! In the 60's, a political generation before Reagan's infamous love fest with the so-called Moral Majority, another statesman who happened to be a Republican espoused the following prescient viewpoint: "Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them." Senator Barry Goldwater, Jr. 1964 And then even after his retirement, when the Republican party had decided to hop into bed with the evangelical Christians, ol' Barry said this: "I think every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the nuts." Barry Goldwater, Jr. 1981
What is your definition of stupidity?
p-nullifidian comments on Nov 22, 2021:
In my opinion, stupidity is making the same type of cognitive errors and decisions repeatedly. Yes, I’ve heard the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result, but stupidity is a failure to take cognizance of one’s ignorance or shortcomings, ignore new information and thus fail to learn, whether it be from one’s own prior mistakes or the mistakes of others.

I've never been paid, never heard of anyone who I know having been paid, and find it rather 'twisted' to be 'incentivized to dontate.' Is there a relationship between personality and intelligence?
p-nullifidian comments on Mar 3, 2022:
I agree with @RichieO, as IMHO, human beings possess many different types of intelligences. Some of us are mechanical geniuses who could MacGyver their way out of any situation, others gifted and intelligent mathematicians or theoreticians, while still others have social intelligence skills and aptitudes that suit them well for interrelationships and problem-solving, particularly under duress. Would we say that the Mensan who scored in the top 2 percentile of a standardized exam, but couldn’t find their way out of a paper bag is necessarily more intelligent than the streetsmart individual who never gets lost, whether on land or sea, yet didn’t graduate from college? Personality, it seems to me, may correlate better with the type of intelligence one possesses, as opposed to whether or not one is regarded as intelligent, or even gifted. All of that having been said, when it comes to IQ tests, some studies have shown a correlation with the highest scores and the self-reported “I” and “N” attributes of the MBTI.
