p-nullifidian replies on Jun 21, 2021:
Reality is defined as โthe world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.โ If my mind has been altered by psychotropics or alcohol even, inducing synesthesia or hallucinations, my perception of reality is distorted. Reality does not require an observer, whether drunk or sober, in order to exist.

p-nullifidian replies on Jun 20, 2021:
For many of us, meaning comes from explaining things. The more descriptive the explanation, the more profound the meaning. And since facts are required to support explanations, the body of knowledge and method of gathering such facts, known as science, is irreplaceable in the endeavor to obtain meaning.

@bbyrd009 I've read the Bible, cover to cover, and was raised in a faith where memorizing significant portions was a rite of passage. We were first taught to revere that book, to treat it as holy and to never physically stack another book of any kind on top of it. But it's all noise and bunk to me now. A re-reading of it as an adult led me to the conclusion that the Bible is a book that should be relegated to the cheap fantasy section of any bookstore or library. In addition to being a nullfidian, I'm a positivist. So in my world view, if there are facts to be learned or knowledge gained from any book or source of any kind, they would be scientifically verifiable and universal. Mysticism, metaphysics and religious allegory are all 'woo' to me.

@bbyrd009 Hidden wisdom? It was the divine hiddenness of God that sealed the deal for me. That along with the infinite caprice of inconsistent action (interventions), both in the present and as described in the book I was taught to accept as truth. Finally, the cop out alibi of any occurrence we are unable to understand is simply an example of Godโs mysterious ways, does not satisfy.

@BDair While I would agree with the proposition that, as Karl Popper noted, scientific knowledge is provisional, there are some scientific facts that one would have thought were settled, the shape of our planet being one of them. The fact that one can find all manner of fringe theories and โcitizen scientistโ idiocy on social media is not a commentary on science or the scientific method. Rather, it is a reflection of society in general. That the social network would seek to undertake a fact checking mission on its billions of users is, in my opinion, a fools errand! The average consumer of social media is not so much in need of protection as they are in need of an education, particularly in the area of critical thinking and reasoning skills. We must all be our own fact checkers, and when presented with an assertion of any kind, consider the source.

p-nullifidian replies on May 29, 2021:
@glennlab As the old saying goes, 'shoulda, coulda, woulda.' When stimulus checks are sent to renters who know they can effectively squat in a property without consequences, it's inevitable that some will take advantage of this circumstance. All of this began during the previous administration, and continues during the present one. Housing, whether in rent or a mortgage, is always the single largest and most easily identified expense, and if the government were to truly have been of assistance it would have set up a system that channeled rent and mortgage payments directly to landlords and / or lenders, rather than throwing money at renters without any accountability. Because of the fact that lenders and financial institutions are allowed to conduct business as usual (i.e., reporting late or missed payments to credit bureaus and, worst of all, foreclosure), my father and I have our nuts in a vice. Our reserves include money that was to go for his future care needs. We'll never get our savings back because property owners like my father and I (and there are a vast number of mom and pop landlords like us) have been left without a chair when the music stopped playing!

Is it any wonder that Faux News is so popular among Evangelical Christians?

Just as people refused to practice social distancing and wear masks, they will proudly refuse to vaccinate themselves. And if a sufficient number do so, they become hosts to perpetuate the pandemic and infect the poor few whose compromised immunity prevented them from inoculating themselves. In a democracy, the majority who wish to move beyond the pandemic and prevent any further spread or mutations will demand that the minority who eschew the vaccine either volunteer to participate or be coerced to do so.

@MsKathleen When looking at history through the lens of our lifespans itโs understandable that one might not notice improvement. But when we compare where we are today to any other point in history, where would you really rather be? A century ago, during a time when our knowledge of diseases was limited, our personal hygiene was dubious and life expectancy was less than half what it is today, 500 million people were infected by the Spanish flu killing 50 million. And yet less than 12 months from the start of the Coronavirus pandemic I was fortunate enough to be vaccinated against COVID 19. And as Steven Pinker has identified in his book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, violence in our species has significantly declined, over time. Yes, we must continue to clean up our environment, but weโve begun to identify and eliminate the toxins, and our diets are evolving from an over-reliance on meats and crappy food in cans to organically certified produce and a reduced dependency on meat.

Your insistence on a singular explanation for the ills of the world combined with your hesitance to recognize other mitigating factors serve to undermine reasonable discussions. p-nullifidian replies on Apr 23, 2021:
@Krish55 โThe single biggest fundamental cause of backwardness in the world today is US Imperialism.โ The entire world? One must examine each countryโs failures and successes on a case-by-case basis. I agree that many countries in Latin America have been the target of US meddling, but sub-Saharan Africa has, if anything, been ignored. More than double the foreign direct investment (FDI) comes from China and EU nations than from the US (source: Brookings). Cost Rica, which was never invaded by the US, was pleased to have been left alone, but its success is tied to its choice to eliminate its army, educate its populace, engage in land reform and pattern its monetary policies after Switzerland. Is the US to be blamed for the vast poverty in India, a nation that went nuclear before it had internal plumbing, and relied on the support of the Soviet Union for decades? Speaking of which, the rise of the repressive Taliban regime was spurred by the Soviet invasion and occupation of Afghanistan (1979-89). The US has been, and continues to be, a hegemonic actor in a number of regions of the world, but it is not, IMO, the greatest reason for the lack of progress in every nation of the world. Whether at the micro or macro level, the most relevant factor in the elimination of poverty has always been education, particularly of girls / women. In countries where women are educated and given greater opportunity, the birth rate drops and household income rises (see Hans Roslingโs TED Talk on Religion, Babies and Poverty). And as we know, access to education is determined by the priorities of each country.

And while followers rally around the so-called prophet during their lifetime, it takes their death to allow for them to be elevated, if not deified, through the fabrication of wonders and miracles. These self-serving narcissists I have mentioned, and others, may have claimed that God was at the center, but it was always all about them. @RoboGraham Indeed! The arcane notion of a 'royal family' belongs in the dustbin of history. The very concept that a particular family is genetically qualified to rule is too absurd for refutation. Whether it be Saudi Arabia, Spain, Great Britain or Brunei (to name several), there simply is no justifiable reason for monarchy in the 21st century! Away with kings & queens, princes & princesses, dukes & duchesses, earls & countesses, barons & baronesses, and sultans even--they are parasitic relics who have no reason for being, even in our imaginations (think Wakanda)! Throughout history, the throne has been in league with the altar, and the altar has propped up the throne, a clear demonstration that neither institution is of intrinsic value to the people. Any man or woman whose sole desire is to be a 'subject' (whether it be of crown or church) abdicates their own self-worth, individuality and dignity.
