A French Teenager’s Anti-Islam Rant Unleashed Death Threats. Now 13 Are on Trial
p-nullifidian comments on Jul 6, 2021:
Beliefs have consequences. If one believes that it is a crime, punishable by death, to blaspheme, or to become an apostate, this belief will lead to great harm. To quote Ghandi, who was evidently inspired by Lao Tzu: “Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.”

Why Nobody Should Be an Atheist [theapeiron.co.uk]
p-nullifidian comments on Jul 6, 2021:
Too many fallacies in this brief article to address. Suffice to say, the burden of proof lies with the theist who claims that God exists, and thus far, the evidence presented has been insufficient to prove the existence of a deity, so I find God 'not guilty' of existing.
In my mind there are two separate issues.
p-nullifidian comments on Jul 6, 2021:
As a nullifidian (one who is without faith or religious belief), I tend to agree with you ... so I suppose I don't need to fuck myself. ;-) My de-conversion process from religious faith to no faith at all involved a way point or rest stop called Deism, the faith of my avatar, Thomas Paine. At some point I understood that all organized religions are the creations of human beings who acted on their own (i.e., without divine inspiration), and that all religions that have ever existed, including those today, are feckless at best, and immoral at worst. Paine believed that 'the Almighty' created the universe and all the laws that govern it, and then went on to other more important matters. A Deist doesn't accept that there is a 'personal god' who, on occasion, intervenes in human affairs. Deists thus reject reports of miracles, prophets, houses of worship and all self-anointed clergy. Paine said, "My own mind is my own church." I was fine with this position for a time, but soon realized that whether or not I believed in such a deity made no difference, and so the Deist god became just as irrelevant and nonexistent as the others.

Meaning of life
p-nullifidian comments on Jul 5, 2021:
'Meaning' (which I assume you to intend as making sense of things) cannot be imposed. It can only be what we, and not anyone else, attribute to our own lives, never to those of others, or to life in general. To ruminate any further on the subject is, IMHO, a waste of our time. p-nullifidian comments on Jul 4, 2021:
Prog Metal is its own sub-genre. This band appears to follow in the tradition of bands like Dream Theater, Riverside and Opeth. I have to be in the mood for prog metal, even though bands like Rush and Pink Floyd were among my favorites. The best prog rock was from the 70s, IMO. I was a huge fan of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, early Genesis, Yes, Focus, Camel, Jethro Tull, and many more. In recent decades, I’ve encountered very few bands that invoke some of the best of what prog rock has to offer. IMO, notable exceptions of 21st century prog rock bands/projects/artists include Transatlantic, Frost* (Milliontown), OSI, Steven Wilson, Spock’s Beard and Pure Reason Revolution.

Even Ronald Reagan, in his speech at the signing of the bill for reparations to Japanese Americans and their families interned in camps during World War II, emphasized: “For here we admit a wrong; here we reaffirm our commitment as a nation to equal justice under the law.” That law signed by Reagan in 1988 admitted, via formal apology, that the United States had committed a grave misdeed. Our government was wrong, as were the majority who supported this action, and we must never forget this!

Precisely. Trump did not create his followers. His followers created him! The majority of his followers fall into a particular demographic. p-nullifidian comments on Jun 24, 2021:
Interesting how nearly all of these “news” sources couch the IRS denial as an infringement or affront to Christian meddling in politics, the very thing that infringes on the establishment clause of the First Amendment. The value expressed by the Framers when separating church and state through the formation of a secular government and drafting a godless Constitution is not shared by today’s Republican Party. A conservative Republican senator from a previous generation had this to say: “I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.'" - Barry Goldwater

I knew that as soon as the press left Beijing that the people who’d gathered in Tiananmen Square, along with their Goddess of Democracy paper mache statue, would be wiped out. Sadly, most Chinese students today have been taught from a very early age that the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre was in fact a necessary action taken against troublemakers and rioters, and not a massacre at all. There is a similar party line when it comes to Hong Kong!

p-nullifidian comments on Jun 1, 2021:
Pride, as we all know, is one of those seven deadly sins (not that I believe in sin as a construct), and it does often seem to, as the proverb says, precede a fall. That said, it seems to me that taking pride in something like skin color, or any other genetic trait in which we had no say in the matter, is simply misguided. The positive accomplishments of any individual or group of individuals should, IMHO, be celebrated by all. Human achievement uplifts humanity, not simply a subset thereof.

As a landlord who didn’t plan to be one (I’m helping my 83-year-old father rent his home while he’s in assisted living), I have seen both sides of this issue play out. My father’s tenant hasn’t paid rent in months, taking advantage of the moratorium on evictions here in California. Meanwhile the tenant has used their stimulus checks and unemployment to buy things like new furniture and a big screen TV! And do you think the bank who has the mortgage on this property gives a damn about our situation? We have dipped into savings just to cover the mortgage for the past 8 months and our savings is almost gone.
Is it better to stay silent?

I have no problem staying silent when it comes to discussing philosophy or religion ... it's pretty much what I do at every family gathering. But when it comes to attempts by the faithful to impose their belief systems in the political sphere and society as a whole, I cannot ever remain silent.
This is atrocious
