Do You Believe in Evolution?

...None of those answers is accurate. Macro and micro evolution are the exact same thing, so those options make no sense, there is no evidence a god exists, and I certainly don't believe one does, so I can't choose that one, and the last option is a joke. Evolution is a fact. Pull the "just a ...
paul1967 replies on Oct 9, 2017:
I've gotten a lot of people reporting back that evolution is a fact. Science doesn't declare absolutes; science offers us the best explanations that support any given model. To claim evolution as a fact is no different than a theist asserting that it is incorrect. The reason for my distinction between micro and macro wasn't that I don't understand that they are similar terms referring to the same thing, as stated above, "Before anyone decides to inform me that micro is macro given time. I am aware." I worded it that way because I know many theists who accept microevolution but reject the macroevolutionary evidence that supports speciation. So Evolution is a theory based on a massive amount of evidence, and as it stands now, it's the best explanation of what is occurring in nature.
First date, who pays?

I'm old school so I pay regardless of how well the date went. I don't assume the woman isn't independent. She may very well make more than me, but tradition has it that the man pays. I would feel awkward if she paid and it wouldn't feel like a date going dutch. For me, there are no strings attached ...

WOW! That last guy you mentioned is a complete idiot. In my cynical mind the upshot of a bad first date is that you don't need to waste any more energy on them. Here's my issue with a good date I keep waiting for the crazy to be exposed. I'm working on not being that guy, because I know I'm not without baggage myself. A real quality relationship is based primarily on knowing your own short comings and being willing to accept your partner for theirs without insisting they must change.

paul1967 replies on Oct 6, 2017:
You're probably a nice guy and in my experience most women aren't looking for the nice guy. They're looking for other qualities and those qualities seem to exclude the nice guy as if as showing kindness means you're not capable of those other qualities. I m sure to get a bunch of angry replies but this is my opinion and not a fact. When I've been the guy that caters to the needs and desires that women claim they want I always end up in the friend zone. Whenever I act less interested I get far more attention but that's not who I am I'm literally incapable of being that person. I'm a nice guy. I want to be clear that not all women are this way I used the word most deliberately. It's just that a high proportion of women seem as though power strength drives financial success all outweigh the nice guy. And sometimes those things can go hand-in-hand you can be a nice guy and still have drives strength financial success.

Do You Believe in Evolution?
Benthoven comments on Oct 6, 2017:
I don't "believe" in evolution anymore than I "believe" that the earth is round or that our solar system is sun-centric. These things just are. Beliefs are created in the absence of data, the absence of facts. Once we have the data, belief isn't necessary.
paul1967 replies on Oct 6, 2017:
I appreciate your conviction. I would say that belief is still a subset of knowledge. Since I have never been to space and seen the Earth go around the sun or done the calculations that prove it without having been to space, I believe that the evidence is being accurately reported to me by those that have. It might just be an issue of definitions, and I think this is likely. My definition of faith is more in line with your definition of belief. My definition of belief is an acceptance of any proposal after the evaluation of evidence. Faith would be acceptance of any proposal despite the contrary or lack of evidence.

I hope your wrong that our atheist culture would try to do something as useless and ineffective and morally reprehensible as making belief in the supernatural a jailable offence. I'm married to a theist. I am in the middle of a divorce which weakens my case, but I assure you that her theism was not the reason for our breakup. It's doable if you accept that whoever your partner is, you can't change them. I won't say that I don't wish she better understood that the lack of belief in a God is a more honest position than asserting not just any God but her God. Honestly, though I didn't ask for the divorce because she was a theist it was for a range of personal reasons.

I live in a very conservative area politically. I have a few friends that are Atheist or have an "alternate religion" (forgive my apparent flippancy). But, mostly I don't worry about meeting other Atheists. Most of my friends are religious in some way or another, but I like them all the same.

I agree I think taking theist out of the dating pool is unwise. There is one thing, admittedly a relatively big thing, but it's only one difference between a theist and myself, we disagree on whether there is a God. If I found a person (in my case woman) that had the exact same opinion on every subject that I do I would be bored and irritated all at once. I really don't want to date the female version of me.

What would be included as part of Sharia Law? 1) Murder of a virgin prior to marriage. 2) Stoning of homosexuals 3) Cutting of the skin around the clitoris 4) Death for apostasy. 5) Death or imprisonment for Atheist. These are just a few of the "peaceful" laws they consider the word of God. Before I commit to this line of thinking I have to admit something that I'm not sure about. I believe the pew poll has given us an accurate accounting of what was said, but given the pressures put on people to confirm Sharia Law I can't know how many of the 50% actually think this or if they felt that they had to answer this way for fear of their safety.

So what jenitaregister is saying is that this purpose that gets instilled in humans through religion gives people hope and community and a feeling that they know that their morality must be right. The result is a powerful glue that blinds people from the reality that they are clinging to an imaginary foundation.

If there is a God maybe he created all this stuff 14 billion years ago and doesn't care or doesn't know that we are even here. I look at it like this, I have no idea if a God exists and I have no evidence that one does or doesn't so until I do I'm not going to believe. But only a little more than half of them (33% of all Americans) express the belief that humans and other living things evolved solely due to natural processes. A quarter of U.S. adults (25%) say a supreme being guided evolution. The same survey found that 34% of Americans reject evolution entirely, saying humans and other living things have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.
