Why are theists afraid of evolution?
atheist comments on Sep 23, 2017:
Evolution is proven whereas god is not, so it makes god irrelevant. No evidence, where there should be evidence, is evidence that a god doesn't exist.
paul1967 replies on Sep 23, 2017:
I want to start out by saying I accept evolution both in a micro sense and a macro sense since they are essentially the same thing given enough time. I do not doubt our current model of evolution is mostly accurate. Having said that I couldn't agree with your statement that all of evolution in the macro usage, is a "proven" model. Pointing this out might sound trivial, but I think it's imperative when speaking about evolution that we represent the facts as accurately as possible.
Why do you reject the idea of religion?
paul1967 comments on Sep 20, 2017:
I don't reject the idea of religion I reject the practice of religion. I reject kids not getting medical treatment because an old book tells them God will heal all things if you pray hard enough. I reject children being taught that science is BS and it's just a bunch of men in white coats grabbing ...

SonnyMIAPH You said you envied those people who scammed money when you're scraping the bottom of your rice pot to feed your family. I just want to say that I respect you more for scrapping the bottom of your rice pot and I know respect doesn't feed your family, but it's not nothing either. You're a leader to our future, every parent is and the shitty part here is I can't offer you a glorious reward in an afterlife for your efforts I can just say thanks.
Where do we go after we die other than turning into dust?
Vistile comments on Sep 22, 2017:
The assumption that you go someplace has no evidence. If you would like a somewhat accurate representation of what it feels like when you are dead, just imagine what you felt like before you were ever conceived.
paul1967 replies on Sep 22, 2017:
You nailed it. It was not a feeling it was not existing. I'm not afraid of death I'm afraid of living badly
Has anyone read Genesis: 38.
SonnyMlaPH comments on Sep 21, 2017:
Mr.Paul1967, I think Mr.Atheist said it quite clearly and I happen to agree with him. If back then a tribal custom constitutes the law of the tribe then there's nothing ethical in what the head of the family want to impose upon his household. What could be unethical in the story was the woman's ...

Here is my issue. Er may have been a bad guy or maybe not but God kills him knowing what the laws are and knowing the outcome. He essentially put all this into motion. Here's a novel idea, how about instead of killing Er, God creates an angel that can come down from Heaven and act as a perfect psychological counselor. Offering help so that Er can stop being a bad guy.
How to deal with religious family and friends?
MartinKen comments on Sep 20, 2017:
I politely explain to them that while our views may be different , I don't respect theirs any less. If they are persistent and/or inquisitive, I may discuss the reasoning (questioning and considering other possibilities) behind my views, but not in a way that attacks what they believe. I may even ...
paul1967 replies on Sep 21, 2017:
I'm not trying to be disrespectful. I'm just asking, do you really respect their beliefs or are you just telling them that not to cause friction? My extended family knows I don't disrespect them as people, they know I love them, but they also know I have no respect for their beliefs. They sure don't have respect for mine, and I feel no obligation to hide my dislike of theirs.
Why do you reject the idea of religion?
joshua comments on Sep 20, 2017:
I believe in each persons right to find God their own way. I believe Judaic based religions are based in falsehood
paul1967 replies on Sep 20, 2017:
What reason do you have to believe any God exists?
Has anyone ever forced their belief on you?
atheist comments on Sep 19, 2017:
Those jehovah's witnesses are worse than zombies. It doesn't matter how many times you kill them they keep coming back.
paul1967 replies on Sep 20, 2017:
Oh, I love it when Jehovah's witnesses come knocking on my door. I invite them in, we gather around the table, I'll make them a cup of tea or coffee. Then I'll start talking about some of the crazy crap the Bible has to say and how unethical it all is. Without even cracking open the Bible I'll start naming off passages, I'm sure they've never read. My favorite starter story is Genisis 38 - Here God the omniscient one who knows everything that's about to happen kills Er the brother of Onan because God didn't like Er, no other reason given other than God thinks Er's a jerk. Then he commands Onan to have sex with his dead brother's wife and to knock her up, but Onan doesn't want to. So Onan said oh yeah all have sex with her, that's no problem, but I don't want to get her pregnant because it won't be my son (even though it would be. Just more craziness in the Bible.) So God insists, basically at Gunpoint, so Onan agrees. Onan devises a plan to pull out and spill his seed on the ground which allows him to have sex but won't get her pregnant. Onan figures, Gods an idiot he'll never know I'm pulling out. Well God, of course, finds out and kills Onan too. The moral of the story is God knows all this is going to play out just the way it does, but what fun is being a God if you can't find imaginative ways to kill your creation. I go through a few more of these stories straight from the Bible. They usually excuse themselves around story two or three. It's a bit mean I suppose, but it's their Bible that they're trying to sell me on. They had better be more prepared to defend it or acknowledge it for what it is.
How certain are you that there is a god?
spiritual1947 comments on Sep 3, 2017:
God is the highest intelligence in the total Nature. As a computer gets its hardware or body from matter or material nature arrenged or developed or evoluted in a way and energized by material electrical energy. It gets the operating intelligence from the intelligence of human. Different functional ...
paul1967 replies on Sep 20, 2017:
1) The problem with your analogy is we have examples of computers and computer programmers. We have no examples of a supernatural deity. 2) "Only intelligence can bestow intelligence" this is a common fallacy. It's called House of Cards fallacy: Theories based on a theory or in your case assumptions based on assumptions presented as fact unsupported by the evidence directly (example: “Life arose spontaneously and randomly on this planet. Therefore millions of other planets have life as well”) 3) "This Intelligence is the god." You are asserting again that you know this without providing any data to back it up. My advice is for you to research critical thinking skills. It isn't hard, but it does take practice.
What theory of the beginning of the Universe do you support?
SketchyBuffalo comments on Sep 10, 2017:
I believe that before the known universe there was a tiny (like universally speaking), scorching mass of matter and antimatter constantly crashing. Chain reactions like this allowed simple atoms (hydrogen) to come into existence. From there things are pretty simple. Masses of hydrogen gas gather ...

bobbymagee41, no Debra is correct, and the big bang model is not the same as a supernova model. The word galaxy is not the same as the word universe. To my knowledge, we have never witnessed the formation of a galaxy. You might be confusing the word galaxy with the phrase for a solar system, I'm not sure, but in either case, sketchBuffalo's was giving us his idea of how the universe began. I don't think he was describing the formation of galaxies and if he were, he would have been wrong.
Is there such thing as a soul mate?
seekthetruth comments on Sep 15, 2017:
To begin with- what is a soul? Secondly, why does it need a mate? If our soul is some part of our spirit, personality, experiences that continues without the body, then it would seem that that part of us would be made for freedom, growth, and constant change. It is outside of physical constraints....

I don't like humans - is that bad ?
Lonely comments on Sep 17, 2017:
Not to like humans? In general? It sounds monstrous, hostile and hair- raising. Who do you like then?
paul1967 replies on Sep 19, 2017:
I'm not criticizing your response, I'm just disagreeing with it. I don't know if what sharkgirl meant to say, is she hates humans period all of them or if what she meant was she hate humanity. If what she meant was she hates humanity I'm with her on that. I see humans as a failure with the potential for success. We are the only species of animal that I know of capable of real global altruism. We could if we wanted to end much of the suffering in the world. We would first need to drop religion, then drop borders and then pool our resources. Humans could make the world better for us and all the life on the planet, the question is will we? I think that would take more time than we have left on this Earth to evolve socially enough to get there. But I could be wrong.
How do you tell religious people that you're an atheist?
JLsobel comments on Sep 16, 2017:
In my early twenties I was pretty angry and abrasive with my beliefs or lack thereof. I've found that communicating an aura of open acceptance, humility and a willingness to listen completely changes the receptivity of the knowledge that I am agnostic. It almost catches people off guard. There is a ...

What story in the holy book/s was totally silly?
Jeeee123 comments on Sep 19, 2017:
Tough question, there are so many! I remember questioning the Noah's Ark fairytale as a child. I think I gave the Sunday School teacher a nervous breakdown with all my questions. She was so frustrated she told me Jesus wanted my to be quiet.
paul1967 replies on Sep 19, 2017:
LMFAO Oh that's funny.....I'm still laughing "Jesus want's you to be quiet" I'm sure he would since the answer to the question is, its utter nonsense and an entirely immoral story about a failure by God and his solution to genocide all but one family.
Should religion be taught in schools?
JLsobel comments on Sep 16, 2017:
No. Separation of church and state is VERY important to me.
paul1967 replies on Sep 19, 2017:
I hate communicating through text because so much of communicating is with body language and the nuance and meaning can be easily misinterpreted. I am not criticising your view, but rather, tossing out another aspect that you may not be considering. If the question were "Should religion be promoted in schools," I would agree but the study of theology isn't a subject that should be left off the curriculum, and it isn't a question of church-state separation. If you disagree with this point, I would very much like to hear your views.
