@Barnie2years I have serious skepticism towards the economists claiming a problem with depopulation. The worker shortage could be compensated for by increases in efficiency, which is the case in many developed countries. Also, I'm betting that nearly all countries suffer from severely (or ridiculously) imbalanced wealth and income. I am all in favor of robots replacing farm workers tasked with severely arduous labor. While people could be depopulated with pandemics, developing a virus that causes sterility is an option. If people won't accept making hard choices, they will be made for them, one way or another.

@JackPedigo And the good news is... Humans have become stock for experimental breeding by various ET's interested in such pursuits. What they do with their specimens after creating them is unclear, but slavery probably figures into it. Our body plan is more robust than those of several species. We may destroy the planet for our successors, but humans may survive elsewhere. Does it really matter? In the following video, I believe Maria is a marooned experiment. Imagine what level of technology is capable of creating such a hybrid. https://tubitv.com/movies/588613/alien-mummies-of-peru

@JackPedigo I don't disagree with Malthus or Erlich. The subject reminds me of how bacteria grow on a petri dish agar until they've produced enough toxins that growth stops. I'm also reminded of how commercial products are produced in increasing quantities, until market forces compel a decline and finally a cessation. We live in a chaotic free-for-all sustained by Earth's bounty, but the pollution and exhaustion of resources reduce the reproduction rate. Can we reduce our numbers and still survive? Can we live (culturally) in a state of environmental tolerance? I wish I could survive long enough to see how it turns out, but that's not realistic.

The proposition that science should have trouble distinguishing between 6000 years versus 4,300,000,000 demonstrates a dishonesty that defines evil.

@Triphid @Betty @Fernapple Skado: But the preponderance of evidence suggests that religious thought and practices are a product, or at minimum, a byproduct of natural selection. Which means it has served to enhance our survival and reproduction. (Absurd assertion followed by false conclusion) When you are dealing with immeasurable quantities, there's no way to claim one quantity is greater than another. (That is just hilariously and pathetically stupid. So there's no difference between a pond and a lake...) What are you going to blame for the hideous crimes in history of regimes that outlawed religion? (So Skado accepts the Christian propaganda that communist regimes that committed mass murder didn't control people with a belief system, usually a personality cult). ...psychological traits that formed in the context of pre-human and human hunter/gatherer societies over more than two million years on the African savannas are not likely to be radically altered in a span of only a few thousand years. (The psychological evolution fanatic is somehow ignorant of Gould's Punctuated Equilibrium). Hideous criminality is one of the many capacities innate in human nature, and magnified by evolutionary mismatch. Religion, historically, is the only institution that has tried to offer a counterbalance to that mismatch. (Recall Hitchens's admonition that to make people commit utterly wicked hideous crimes, you need religion.) This is why I currently favor religious reform rather than abolition. (Skado has no problem with the lies being told and believed) From this oversimplified list, and mountains of qualifying and clarifying supportive data, it appears to me... (megalomania much?) ...it appears to me that we have reason to suspect that religion, offensive and controlling and burdensome as it surely is, has acted, and continues to act, as our main counterbalance to evolutionary mismatch (Some new form of Creationism perhaps?)

Even so, I would approve the construction of a pilot plant, to test out the technology. Note how they said it had to have a concrete cap to protect against an airplane crash. Radioactivity is hard to control. The metallurgy to manage the molten salt must be perfect or near-to.

@Gwendolyn2018 @LovinLarge @Diaco (I do have a BA in biology with extra years in developmental biology) If a person cannot reproduce, what sex is that person? What they say they are? What their genotype says they are? Or what gametes their body (should have) produced? They are whatever sex that would be able to reproduce, but for whatever medical condition prevents it. If they have or had eggs, they are female, etc. Hermaphrodites exist, and some might be able to reproduce as either one of the two sexes, but that does not make them a third sex. People who change themselves physically may as well get a tattoo for all the difference it makes. People should not disregard social norms and then complain when they get unwanted attention. The campaign to confuse the artifice of gender with sex, and then to declare sex as a social construct actually does harm to those it imagines it is helping. And, they do need help. But they're not about to get it with nonsensical agitprop. People who attach excessive significance to sex or gender should address their obsession.

@LovinLarge (Link:) "The categories used for sex and gender are socially constructed. This doesnā€™t mean that sex and gender arenā€™t real, but that the way people conceptualize them isnā€™t set into the fabric of the universe ā€” it can, and does, change." Science might be seen as a social construct, but the objective is non-subjective and not artificial. Sex is binary, with the intersex variations that develop as variations of the binary. Sex IS a binary spectrum. There is no third or other sex. The two sexes ARE set into the fabric of the universe (at least for humans and other mammals), though subject to mutations. Gender, on the other hand, is wholly, totally artificial and thus, not real. Gender may represent the underlying sex, or not, demonstrating its unreliability and meaninglessness (and unreality). Yes, gender is not a matter of biology, unless one chooses to include neurochemisty and the behavior derived from it.

Fundamentally, the world and Russia must confront the problem of nuclear weapons being wielded by unfit personalities, people who are psychopathic criminal-minded thugs dedicated to a corrupt kleptocracy. I wouldn't call it desperate; maybe it could be. AFAIK, the campaign to subvert elections and suppress voting rights came from an organization funded by Koch. Representatives went to receptive legislators and crafted recommended actions and laws specific to each state. The legislators have enacted most of these recommendations. This happened because conservatives saw an opening demonstrated by Trump that, without consequences, these laws could create enough confusion that Republicans could get their way whether they won or not (as with Floriday in 2000). Also, Republicans viewed the Supreme Court as sufficiently friendly that only the most egregious laws might get overturned, if it wasn't already too late.

The United States and Russia found common ground on only one point, namely that the Syrian chemical weapons stockpile needed to be removed and destroyed. To this end, Russia tacitly assumed responsibility as the guarantor, ensuring that its Syrian ally would not use chemical weapons and would fully declare its chemical weapons stockpile so it could be destroyed under international oversight. Syria initiated the process to formally join the CWC just 24 days after the Ghouta attack. During that brief period, the Assad regime certainly had not undergone a moral conversion, but rather bowed to pressure from the Western powers and Russia." https://www.armscontrol.org/act/2021-09/features/syria-russia-global-chemical-weapons-crisis

We could advise Republicans to go to Ukraine to fight, but between fascist-Putin and fascist-Nazis, which side do they fight on? Decisions, decisions...

@Lizard_of_Ahaz "In recent years, global neo-Nazi and white supremacist extremist foreign fighters have sought training and combat experience by joining ultranationalist defense militias in Ukraine." https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/fighting-russia-ukraine-sadly-appeals-far-right-extremists-n1290901 Azov and the like have been fighting the Russians in the contested eastern Ukraine. Another poster said the neo-Nazis espoused anti-Russian views. I'd be curious to know just what percent they are.

@Lizard_of_Ahaz Not sure what that link was meant to convey. Putin has no problem using poison gas, so that certainly puts him in the same league as Hitler. Ukraine's links to Nazism are historic, and many neo-Nazis remain, although they are a small faction. Certainly nothing like what Putin's propaganda infers. Your point is valid: Ukraine has been a democracy and kudos to their efforts to remove the kleptocracy Putin had sought to install.
