@FrayedBear Russia and Putin are not illusory bogeymen. They are all too real. While the USSR may have changed from the Cold War era, it is far from collapsed. It continues to engage in Syria, Ukraine, and by its cyberwarfare, most of the West. It is certainly not anything like a benign entity looking for cooperation and profitable trade. The installment of Trump has caused enormous harm. And yet, scarcely anyone considers Russia a threat, so it is doing a poor job of distracting from racism and the stupidity of Christian evangelicals, both of which are clearly recognizable threats.

@FrayedBear The difference being the evidence. The UN inspection said no evidence for weapons of mass destruction, so Bush got bogus evidence together to persuade Colin Powell to give his speech. And when the US went in, no evidence was found. In contrast, evidence of GRU and troll farm activity was abundant. On the front end, Bannon and Manafort's activities were well documented. And, GOP policy was changed. And, Putin used Trump all too effectively to dismantle numerous critical agencies while continuing their propaganda brainwashing via Fox and RT. Those that watch that stuff uncritically are indeed, useful idiots.

@FrayedBear Perhaps I was being facetious. Those who support Trump's phony conspiracies (as against China) are supporting an agent who has often acted in Putin's interests (and almost certainly at Putin's direction). Trump's actions have been decidedly unnatural in the context of a citizen loyal to the United States. Thus, those that support Trump, support Putin. That support might be naive, but such naivete is intentional as the conspiracies of Trump and Putin are well documented. Indeed, the aspirations of Trump/Putin and supporters seek to turn the US into a (much more) fascist state.

Misandry runs so wide and so deep, and, it remains utterly untouchable as a topic. Yet, I suggest that it is a central obstacle to men and women connecting. It is part of the female bubble enclosing all the topics that no one dares broach. Without taking responsibility for their corrupt values (hating men), women continue to play inane games that inevitably turn out badly. And then they blame men for it all. Since we can't talk about it, the only recourse is to blow it off and move on. Both sides need more maturity, not just men. Yeah, you don't deserve that abuse, but this is the internet.

The reality check is this: government is like the budget; only a few percent is discretionary spending, and that's what the election does is to influence how a few clowns will fiddle around the edges (when there is all too much real work to be done).

When that person then insists on disrupting a female athletic competition, that indicates disrespect to the point of hostility. From a scientific perspective, if the person does not have two XX's or a natural female body, they should not be competing in female athletics. @bigjac I totally respect your attitude and frustration in witnessing the ugliness of bigotry in its many forms. We have a huge task in changing society to reduce and remove bias. It may even be impossible, but pursuing it is a moral obligation. However, selectively seeking Black women to staff police departments is neither legal, ethical nor practical. One problem is that many Black people have their own biases. Quite a few revere Farrakhan, who is as ugly a bigot as any neonazi. Many other biases are often harbored against Hispanics, LBGBT, Jews, as well as whites. Again, singling out Black women as the only suitable candidates for law enforcement is absurd. As for medical issues, Blacks (or any race) must share responsibility for their own bad decisions. To be sure, the conditions of white supremacy that fostered bad decision-making are there, but people are not robots and their choices are at least partly their own. In the current example, Blacks remain loyal to the Christianity that enslaved them. Blacks choose to consume food that brings on severe health problems. As currently noted, Blacks are most resistant to taking the vaccine, even though they are most vulnerable to Covid. We all have work to do for ourselves and our loved ones. It might seem hopeless sometimes, but our effort defines us. We must hope that making responsible decisions will elicit the respect needed to be treated humanely. (A big salute to your spouse for evoking such respect. She must be a fine lady!)

SWAGGER behaviors includes lying, bullying, denouncing, gaslighting, testing loyalty, and others that Trump and other dictators are famous for. They have a talent for these behaviors, and they synthesize and project them to orient their followers fealty. Life depends on allegiance from the cellular level, the multicellular level, and finally the social level. Cults are attempts at multi-organism organisms. In the situation you cite, the displays of arrogance and lie-telling are expressions of swagger and dominance. But watch, and you'll see all the other features too. The year was 1925, and the leader was not President Trump but William Jennings Bryan, the former presidential candidate and secretary of state. The lessons of that episode carry a sober warning for today. Loss and humiliation do not make bad ideas go away. Rather, they can take on wilder and more outrageous forms that attract more and more adherents. Bryan’s embarrassment, which came at the legendary Scopes trial, provides the most famous example. Without an invitation, Bryan volunteered to help prosecute Tennessee teacher John Scopes, who stood accused of breaking a new Tennessee law against the teaching of human evolution. Bryan’s participation helped elevate the modest test case into a worldwide spectacle. At the time, Bryan was one of America’s leading culture warriors, attacking the teaching of evolutionary theory in public schools as anti-Christian and anti-American. At the Scopes trial, though, he was forced to admit that he did not understand America’s growing consensus about science and religion. Nor did he offer a satisfying explanation for his opposition to the teaching of evolutionary theory. At least, that’s how his detractors saw it. As one New York Times reporter related, when Bryan took a seat in the witness stand to defend his anti-evolution ideas, “There was no pity for his admissions of ignorance … his floundering confessions that he knew practically nothing of geology, biology, philology, little of comparative religion, and little even of ancient history.” In the eyes of many elites at the time, then, Bryan’s performance seemed to herald the end of the anti-evolution crusade. One popular 1930s history explained that “civilized opinion everywhere” was revolted by Bryan’s anti-evolution ignorance. Into the 1950s, leading historians repeated the mistake, with one declaring that the trial sent Bryan’s movement into “a period of rapid decline.” But predictions of creationism’s demise were wrong. Anti-evolution sentiment did not die with Bryan’s swan-song testimony. In fact, it grew more radical. How did elites get it so wrong? They didn’t understand that they did not think like Bryan’s supporters. While Bryan's performance cost him credibility with elites, their derision only made him more of a hero with his followers. Hearing the laughter and reading the cruel words, Bryan’s fans did not abandon their creationist beliefs. Instead, they dug in. They recognized that their ideas about science and religion were no longer respected in mainstream institutions and began building an alternative set of institutions to propagate their beliefs. After Bryan’s death, his admirers founded a university in his name. Bryan University (now Bryan College) opened in 1930 dedicated to teaching the ideas ...

racocn8 replies on Nov 30, 2020:
Absolutely, beauty is in the mind of the beholder. Indeed, the perception of beauty is among the most intriguing features of existence. The sense of beauty shapes each species. Also, the sense of disgust and revulsion shape our morality. I can see beauty in matter by itself, the specular rainbow pixels glisten everywhere. As for human forms, so much of what we perceive has been manipulated by Hollywood and Madison Avenue. I do not give my friend nor a god credit for how I perceive her. She knows she has good looks, but she also knows she has severe problems; instability, ignorance and low self-esteem. Sadly, her looks contrast sharply with her anger and her depression. I can only suppose she gets a dose of both by whatever media she relies on. I regret if people took offense at my wording. I meant no disrespect. But I would caution that we may well pour out what is inside of us, and to reflect on whether the perception of insult triggered insecurities; maybe even the contemplation of mortality.

To your query, I would say that at 45, it IS unusual to be attractive. Time is cruel. Few people have that beauty that you enjoy looking at, could do well in media, and keep those looks. racocn8 replies on Nov 22, 2020:
@holdenc98 The problem with the study above is that correlation rarely tells you anything about causation, and causation may come from somewhere else anyway. Does belief hobble functional thinking and thus handicap those countries? Probably. But religious countries are not subject to external discrimination, and cannot point to unfair treatment by external entities. In some similar way, do women or non-whites suffer from self-imposed degradation or is it imposed from outside? Here, both are evident. Women and non-whites are subject to prejudicial treatment, but also suffer from self-imposed handicaps. Women also have intrinsic biological handicaps. A society should strive to treat people equally and fairly, and that does mean mitigating biases held over from less civilized times. However, these mitigation efforts are necessarily demoralized where women and non-whites censor valid criticism, and compel society to wear ugly blinders that compel politically correctness and omission of criticism. As example, far too many women bury themselves in their sexually oriented roles and overdo the time spent on clothing and appearance. Too many non-whites remain fully devoted to their religions and refuse to abandon unhealthy eating habits. Thus, the complaints of women and non-whites lose their strength when they have so much work to do themselves.
