racocn8 replies on Sep 24, 2019:
@remiforce @glennlab Fission does indeed release large amounts of energy; that's what nuclear energy is all about. However, the conversions you cite relate to the fissile material that converted to radioactive daughter nuclei, not the 'mass' converted to energy. The Hiroshima Bomb liberated 6.3x10^13 joules of energy, while a proton is the equivalent of 1.5x10^-10 joules of energy. Dividing, we get 4.2x10^23 protons or AMU, atomic mass units for the bomb. A mole is 6.23x10^23 units. so the energy of the Hiroshima bomb is 4.2/6.23 moles of hydrogen. At 1 gram per mole of hydrogen, that's about 0.7 grams, or the mass of 2 paperclips converted to energy in the Hiroshima Bomb. It is indeed surprising that the energy from a nuclear bomb can create a plasma that would briefly be suitable for fusion. This fusion then unleashes still more energy via a different mechanism than fission. And yet, the mechanism is the same as far as converting the differences in nuclear rest mass to energy

@remiforce @glennlab Only a minute fraction of the uranium in the atom bombs got converted into energy. The atoms that were split generated other nuclei known as daughter products. All the energy derived from conversion of the rest mass of the nuclei, and the subsequent decay processes. Elements like uranium seek a ratio or balance in the number of neutrons to protons. In this case, 143 neutrons to 92 protons. However, in a fission reaction, the splitting is uncontrolled as the high-speed neutrons bash the nuclei into fragments. Usually, the daughter nuclei have too many neutrons and decay by emitting electrons. This decay converts a neutron to a proton, getting the nucleus closer to the ideal ratio. However, if the daughter nucleus happens to have too many protons to neutrons (less likely, but it happens) then the decay mechanism is to emit a positron, converting a proton to a neutron and moving the nucleus closer to the ideal balance. The emitted positron is a positively charged electron, an opposite to an electron, as far as charge is concerned. When the positron encounters an electron, the charges cancel and both particles are converted into a great deal of energy. Because conventional matter is mostly expressed with electrons orbiting nuclei, an emitted electron can travel several feet before it slows down and dumps its energy into its surroundings. In contrast, a positron annihilates almost immediately given the abundance of electrons it can encounter. As noted, the entire rest mass of both electron and positron are converted to either 2 or 3 high energy photons. As the rest masses of both electron and positron are 511 keV, the total energy is 1022 keV. Thus the 2 emittted photons are 511 keV, or if 3 are emitted, 341 keV.

@MattHardy Actually, my response was a qualified 'yes'; I do have scientific reason to think smoking canabis helps prevent cancer, beyond cell culture testing. And yes, to the point where cannabis could prevent cancer from cigarette smoking. Cannabis smokers do not have the incidence of cancer that cigarette smokers have, even though cannabis smoke has almost all the ingredients present in cigarette smoke (… the incomplete combustion products thought to cause cancer). The anecdotes validating the use of Rick Simpson Oil are quite numerous at this point, and a few doctors and hospitals are willing to prescribe cannabinoids for cancer patients in an experimental research context. However, most U.S. doctors are either totally ignorant on the subject or feel they don't want to risk their license by offending federal agencies. The near lack of toxicity, even by levels needed to combat cancer, strongly argues for trying cannabis/hemp when the toxic chemicals that are approved for use are not working. Even with mounting evidence, doctors will proclaim that they need to see published double-blind studies, even though we won't see those for another 20 years. That attitude will (continue to) result in millions of PREVENTABLE cancer deaths. Cannabis/hemp are certainly not universal panaceas, but, the list of ailments helped by using these materials keeps growing as the legal restrictions are removed. The question becomes: Why, when presented with a claim that is backed by extensive documentation, you are dismissive?

@MattHardy I recently attended a class where the presenter had documented numerous studies (mostly from non-US countries) that evaluated the effects of cannabis and CBD on cancer. The inch-thick folder was indexed according to the predominant forms of cancer, and included discussions on multiple mechanisms of action. It was fully footnoted and referenced. Each section included one or more anecdotal descriptions of people who had each type of cancer. It is true, most of the studies did not use human subjects, but I would say the preponderence of evidence is not just persuasive, but damning. The drug war prevents studies of cannabis effects on cancer (and a long list of other maladies) from being conducted in the U.S. Only drug abuse studies that support the drug war are allowed. Disinformation continues to be promulgated by Federal agencies, even as the patent office registers hundreds of cannabinoid patents describing applications for cancer and a litany of illnesses. Quite a few of these patents are filed by Federal entities.

I don't believe Harris ever believed that a new rationality would come pre-equipped with axioms comparable to those in the scriptures. With or without scriptures, people behave well enough. However, it is likely that as people leave the myths behind, ordinary reflection provides ethical direction. Plus, the supposed axioms developed in ancient scriptures are far from a moral high ground; our society has take impressive steps that best divine morality, and now, it is the divine morality from scripture that impedes that progress. God is a meaningless term. No one can say anything meaningful about god. Anyone who claims such knowledge is lying or delusional. If there were a god, so what? In the same way, Purpose is also a meaningless term. A god could not confer purpose and purpose does not derive from any particular religion. Purpose is a semantic paradox. Advice: Live as if there were a god, but retain the understanding that purpose comes from you; you create your own purpose. The rest of religion comes from greed and the desire to control others. Seek to understand the motives of yourself and others. Distill this understanding to its essence. You will clarify your own aspirations and understand the aspirations (or lack thereof) of others.

Hitler certainly didn't hold back on his views. If Hitler was an atheist, you will have no problem coming up with a quotation from him espousing said atheism. Statements denouncing Christianity don't qualify because religionists are often known to become self-hating in response to the cognitive dissonance. Hitler's criticisms of Christianity were never public because Germany was almost entirely Christian and thus would not be receptive. Trump might well have had a low opinion of Christianity in private, but he clearly sought to present himself as Christian if only to pander to his followers. You should realize that the assertion that Hitler was an atheist has been a vicious trope put out by Christians to assuage their own shame. Anti-Semitism was major principal of Christian values even though, like abortion, it had no basis in Christian scripture (Unlike the Quran). To the extent that Anti-Semitism became a foundational value of Christianity in Europe, the Holocaust was entirely in line with Christian values, and most Christian Germans were not unhappy to see the Jews killed. Hitler certainly had no scientific basis to kill the Jews, but undertook to concoct such evidence with pseudoscience. Again, for comparison, we have Trump's marshalling of right-wing propaganda to repel global warming concerns. Trump has no fondness for science or fact, except as it serves his pre-existing agenda. The same for Hitler.

It only vaguely resembles a Hobson's choice. Granted both parties are corrupted, but the scale of corruption for the GOP is nearly 98-100% while the Democrats are more like 65-80%. While comparable, it is still absurd to suggest they are equally bad. The truth is, it's even worse than you know. The Deep State, composed of the military-industrial-intelligence complex, keeps most of the real decision-making hidden and classified. The political parties only fiddle around the edges. The Deep State writes the script that the poor schmucks, us, are forced to read. And the truth is, most of the population are psychopathic idiots incapable of voting purposefully. Religionists are delusional in their beliefs and values, and unable to grasp reality. Thus, democracy simply can't work. Add to that a political system that has zero feedback to address the incompetence and malfeasance that are pandemic. We need a system that focuses on corruption as the main threat to the society. Only by purging the voter roles of nutjobs would a democratic society have a hope of surviving.

Therefore, it is indeed incumbent upon those who receive injustice to either seek redress legally, or illegally. As legality generated the injustice, it is understandable if one resorts to illegal means to obtain justice. But, I have difficulty relating to anyone in that part of the world. Sunni or Shiite or Isis, they are all Muslims, and given a chance would bomb us for being 'Infidels'. The history of the US surely has many low points and the high points are getting few and far between. Does the US really exist anymore, other than in the hearts of a small minority? I salute the loyalty to the sentiments of democracy and a constitutional republic, but that's not what we have now. And no one has a plan to get it back, or even advocates dealing with the traitors and treason-enablers in our midst. We are so screwed.
Is it racist to not want an open border?

this reeks of fox news propaganda. disinformation and trying to trigger people.

Sorry, but no. I never watch Fox News. The extremity of your response is noteworthy.

Green_eyes comments on Aug 10, 2018:
It’s a right wing talking point to say that the left want open boards. It’s never been said! The boarders must be and are protected. Trumpski is not looking in the right direction. He gets a rise out of his peeps by talking about a wall that the BP all say they don’t need. People overstaying ...
racocn8 replies on Aug 10, 2018:
Open-border does have a bad sound to it, basically a paradoxical concept. But semantics aside, the term open-border is the functional equivalent of what the ACLU advocates. The ACLU has generally advocated against spending money for border enforcement. The advocacy for the illegal aliens who come in goes to the point of granting amnesty. Functionally, these policies amount to an open-border even though they aren't referenced that way. I question the propriety of the ACLU's level of advocacy. What level of border enforcement would the ACLU support?
Why are the right-wingers indistinguishable from trolls?

I have a problem with Trump in that he will pardon all of his friends. He will probably pardon Manafort so why are we wasting money on a trial? We are in very dangerous territory right now with the corruption of the presidency and the congress.
racocn8 replies on Aug 9, 2018:
Manafort was a Putin stooge helping Ukraine's president after Putin skewed that election. Everything Putin did here he tried out in Ukraine first. Manafort could be the key to Trump, and as deep as any connection between Trump and Putin. He's not the only game in town, but getting a conviction in his first trial may persuade him to avoid the second.
Please note the loyal Trump supporters almost exactly overlap the Evangelicals.
