One might assume that religious practices were relatively benign. However, if doctrine screws people up sexually and/or socially, that can have the effect of generating sociopaths or people with abnormal sexual behaviors. When those people act out, they traumatize other religious members and that trauma may be damaging to the brain. Similarly, by inculcating hate of non-believers, the disposition to violence can also bring about traumatic events, damaging the personality and the brain. If the relationship between religion and damage can be demonstrated with brain activity MRIs and cognitive tests, that would be very persuasive information.

Why is it OK to disparage Christians for their beliefs, but hate speech when Christians disparage atheists? In this case, the social environment figures into the definition.
