I’m 78, having retired after a 27-year career as an FBI Special Agent. I’m a former stalwart Republican, having at one time signed up as a member of the John Birch Society. I’m a former devout Christian, having led a congregation of over 400 members.
So, what happened for my change to liberalism and agnosticism? It’s taken years, but simply stated: (1) Years involved in sitting through numerous trials convinced me of the significance of hard evidence vs. mere hearsay. That combined with extensive research for the truth. (2) The Republican party I once knew collapsed completely under the autocratic leadership of Donald Trump.
