I have taught science for 30 years. I have worked as a scientist in two different fields. I was raised in the Presbyterian church. I abandoned it after my first year in college. I realized I had many questions that theism could not answer adequately.. I have been an atheist ever since.

Until recently, I found being an atheist meant being a hidden population. Glad that being rational is becoming more socially acceptable.

We are in a new geological era.

The Anthropocene represents that period of time in which the human beings changed the features of their environment permantly. Such activities as city building, agriculture, mining, hunting to extinction (a source of great geological and anthropological debate) whereby the surface of the Earth became petmantly changed by the results of human activity. This Epoch naming is roughly equivalent to the end of the ice age (Pleistocene -12,000 yrs ago) and the end of the Holocene (9,000 - 7,000 yrs ago). The culmination of a cold dry period, to a warmet, drier period. Offered to replace the name Holocene. Archaeologically, when I was working in the field in the SW United States, the period berween 12,000 yrs to 9,000 yrs was represented by a culture assemblaged known a paleo hunters. The period between 9,000 yrs and 7,000 yrs was represented by a culture known as the Archaic. Big game hunters gave way to hunters and gathers.

Your new found confidence when you realize that you are actually enrolled in a doctorate program will come beaming through. You will catch the eye of a like minded person who is deserving of you and you of them. The new circumstances will bring a whole new group of people into your sphere of influence. CB, from what youve posted over course of last year, it seems like Frankie has been there for you. I know at one point he wanted marry (if I am remembering correctly), but you weren't ready. Now that Jillian is here is Frankie still standing by you? I know his catholic family is a challenge. Having said all that, the question remains, what level of commitment to want and need now? Do you have any questions or nagging gut feelings that Frankie is not commited. Close your eyes and think about Frankie. Is there any thing that causes discomfort in your stomach when you think about him. Any regrets or hesitations. If not thats a good sign. If yes, is it something that can be overcome. Nothing is a absolutely for sure or certain. One generally knows in their gut if its not right, the red flags that eventually become something insurmountable. This is a difficult time because, with the new baby there are so many emotions, feelings, and hormones. Take your time, be sure one way or the other. Don't hurry.
My Semester With the Snowflakes
t1nick comments on Jan 2, 2020:
Alright William I"m back. I read the article. I can appreciate his journey. I come from a a lower class working family. I was the first in my family to attend and graduate college. But that is not the "stranger in a strange land" part of my journey. I have been a high school science teacher for 31 years. 21 years in and among Native American students and schools. I lived a good portion of that on isolated indian reservations, where I was the minority. I served at the pleasure of the tribe (and still do) and the federal government. I learned how to walk in two worlds, just like my students were expected to do. A decade of my teaching careers was spent in Hispanic communities teaching science. Another period of a "stranger in a strange land" as a minority. I served at their pleasure and discretion. I never accepted mediocrity in myself, or in my students. I have been known as a "nerd" and an intellectual by my peers, my family, and even by my collegiate peers when I was enmeshed in degree program. Statistically, I should never have attended college in the first place, let alone attaining a PhD and four other degrees. I appreciate the authors journey and contrary to my original response, concur with his and your sentiments.

Religion hasnt been a plart of my life for over 45 years. What this site needs is a religious rehabilitation area where new converts can workout their confusions and get the support they need to make their transition. It would reduce the extraneous religious noise. I am not part of the religious & spirituality group, but I keep getting their posts.

More people are working, but not earning significantly more. The increase in jobs occurred in the lowest paying employment sectors. People are still working two and three jobs to make ends meet. If this economy is so good, why are so many in this position. Trump supporters talk about the increase in black employment. Sure they increased, but the bar for black employment was sooooo low coming into this Administration, that it took nothing to register a significant increase. Same with hispanic employment This economy is about a lack of quality employment, despite what the numbers suggest. A one time income tax increase will not offset the harm that the tax breaks will do to the national debt. The economic divide in this nation has never been so great.

What makes human evolution different than evolution of any other organism. We are just another bioligical organism and subject to the same evolutionary laws. We are just ethnocentric enough to assume we are not. Our advanced abstract thinking ability does not preclude us to the laws of evolution. Geologic time is long, as a species we are young. We have already made our species evolutionarily unfit and evolution will have the last word.

Two points: I am not sure that Chauvin is entirely aware of the actual reasons why he acted the way he did. It's part of his make up that was forged in childhood with many influences he may not be totally cognizant of. Second, the motivations for the type of racism and lack of empathy have been thoroughly studied and in general are well understood. He is not a unique specimen. He is a product of a undercurrent of white privilege and angst that pervades not only law enforcement, but a large segment of our society.

He failed on the later, and mostly succeeded on the former.

In this age of predatory capitalism, there is little good about it. It is not the only model that capitalism can follow. However, this iteration is corrupt, short-sighted, and cannibalistic. Changes in diet may have led to changes in speech.
t1nick comments on Mar 16, 2019:
When I was getting my degree in archaeology, I took a classes in environmental anthropology and in paleoanthropology. We learned that as environments changed adaptations occurred with along with the changes. Its not so deterministic as natural selection. As a new food source made its way into the diet of populations, those best suited to masticating the new entrants had a selective advantage over those that did not. Also, the ability to breakdown and digest the cellulose and fiberous plant material in the new plant foods had an advantage. Therefore, both mastication and digestion evolved hand in hand with dentition and jaw adaptation. Those that were able to acquire both were again at a selective advantage. Language changes were a secondary advancement adjoining the change in jaw and dental changes. One of the key evolutionary developments that humans developed was a complex communications structure (aka. Language). Early survival depended upon complex vocalizations and communications. Early humans were much smaller than their prey and their predators. It took a greater complexity to communicate cooperative tasks, thus society developed. Therefore, it is no so much deterministic, rather just a good case for natural selection over many generations, not overnight.

t1nick comments on Mar 7, 2020:
The bible is based on an oral tradition passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. That alone renders it unreliable as each teller puts his/her own spin on it to accommodate their telling style. The stories were collected together at the First and Second Councils of Nicea in 325 CE. The Council collected the various stories, picked those that were the most patriarchal ( I doubt they consciously intended to do that) constructed the first Bible.

With all due respect. I disagree. They are two very separate and distinct paradigms. In many ways diametrically opposed to one another. For a practicing believer to also be a practicing scientist, a compromise has to be reached. In doing so, in my opinion, you lesson the value of both paradigms. Instead of doing one well, you end up doing both mediocrely. You have to make too many sacrifices to make the two compatible. I do not care how many well known scientist claimed both. I would be willing to bet that they were making severe compromises in one or the other. Social convention and social pressure is often too hard for some pepole to go against no matter how brilliant they may be.

t1nick comments on Jul 26, 2020:
Our DNA is greater than 98.5% percent identical to a chimpanzees. Both chimpanzees and Homo branched off the same phylogenetic lineage, the same lineage that gorillas branched. The most recent common ancestor to all three was not an ape, but approaching primate-like. We did not evolve from apes, we evolved parallel to and contemporaneous with chimps, bonobos, gorillas, and orangs. To be clear, we are not descended from apes. In the Jurassic and Cretaceous, our common ancestor was a small arboreal, insect-eating mammal (almost rodent like). After the dinosaur extinction at the end of the Cretaceous, mammals and birds became the dominant taxa. Our ancestors increased their size, came down out of the trees and expanded their diets.

Yes in the sense that he is more intelligent than Trump. He knows the implications of his and the Presidents actions and doesn't care. He would rather serve as a sycophant and push his nazi Evangelical agenda than stand up for what is moral and ethical.

I had 15 students come online, on their own time this afternoon to watch the streamed touchdown with me. I was very excited about the response.

Cutie - one further point. When you see the Slogan, "Make America Great Again", usually the supporters are referring to society in the 1950's. Coming off World War II, America had tremendous growth and economic prosperity. What most people fail to remember (or realize) is that most Americans paid in excess of 60% of their income as income tax to pay for that prosperity. Also it was the pinnacle of white privilege where whites could get away with anything over minorities and did (see Jim Crow era).
Double Trouble....

I can relate to that. I have my three dogs and an occasional call to my ex to make sure dhe's alright. Lol. During the school year I have my colleagues at work and my high school students for discourse. Once I get home though I live in a housing compound where everybody retreats to their house and family and doesn't come out until they leave for work the next day. Feel free to reach out, I could use some good conversation as well.
Something to aspire to next year.

The Sun is a tabloid newspaper that specializes in sensational purple journalism. Not exactly a credible source on anything. FYI: here is some background on The Sun: The Sun is a tabloid newspaper published in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. As a broadsheet, it was founded in 1964 as a successor to the Daily Herald, and became a tabloid in 1969 after it was purchased by its current owner. It is published by the News Group Newspapers division of News UK, itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. Since The Sun on Sunday was launched in February 2012, the paper has been a seven-day operation. The Sun previously had the largest circulation of any daily newspaper in the United Kingdom, but it was overtaken by rival Metro in March says paper has its "own mind" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sun_(United_Kingdom) Furthermore: Five years after its arrival on Fleet Street, the Sun was up for sale partly because of losses dating back to its predecessor, the Herald. As a broadsheet, the paper was attracting a daily readership of one million. There were two key players interested in buying: the millionaire Labour MP Robert Maxwell and the right-leaning Australian newspaper proprietor Rupert Murdoch, who already owned The News of the World. Mr Murdoch clinched the deal and immediately relaunched the Sun as a tabloid - shortly followed by the introduction of the Page Three girls. In 1978 The Sun overtook its closest rival The Mirror in the circulation war. In 1986 Mr Murdoch introduced new print technology and moved the Sun to Wapping. In 1997 the Sun returned to its Labour roots and backed Tony Blair for Prime Minister. In early 2006 the paper's circulation was 3.1 million. http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/september/15/newsid_3068000/3068749.stm
