Another excellent read is, "Horseman on the Roof", by Jean Giono. It's about a cavalier who gets caught in the area along the border of France and Italy at the height of the black plague. They made a movie of it many years ago. He also wrote another excellent novel about the Lombardi region. This one was about the internecine war between the Lombardi region in the north, and the groups from around Napoli. A good was to understand the culture that is being debated now in Lombardi.
Those were the daze!

Soviet Union was not Socislist. It was Communist. Russia is not being successful. Their economy is about to collapse and the elections are rigged. Dissidents are jailed, killed, or disappear. I hope we are nothing like that. It is an oligarchy, owned by Putins (and by association, Trumps friends). The government is a near dictatorship and totally owned by the corporate friends of Putin. The citizens got a shot of nationalistic pride with the annexation of Crimea and invasion of eastern Ukraine. But that was short-lived. Life in Russia is not pleasant according to most reports not controlled by the state media machine. The oil war between Saudi Arabia and Russia may bring down the government if it lasts too long.
It's funny.

They are on both sides - Republican and Democrat
t1nick comments on Mar 19, 2020:
It is true that members of both parties are owned by various corporations. But to equate their evilness as equal is spurious. It's a simple way to shrug your shoulders, throw your hands up and proclaim, "They're all corrupt and I can't do anything, so I just turn cynical and do nothing". That's an abrogation of responsibility as a voter and citizen. If you look at the total of corpus passed by the Democratically controlled House, the majority of them were written and passed to benefit the average citizenry. Then look to McConnell and the Republican lead Senate and you will very easily and clearly see the difference between the two parties. Just take the Senate vote today. My parents grew up on the Great Plsins during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. As I grew up they always said, "Democrats were for the common folk, and Republicans were for the Corporations". It appears nothing has changed.

t1nick comments on Mar 14, 2020:
Routines and rituals are important to most mammals. If the ritual or routines successfully provides them with the basic elements for survival, they will return to it again and again. It calms the anxieties of the unknown and unpredictable. When routines and rituals become unpredictable or no longer net the desired results then a new one will be found to replace it (hence paradigm shift). Humans are among the only organism to take routine and ritual to ridiculous ends. We are not an evolutionarily fit species.

Student discovers a village in BC older than the pyramids. [archaeology-world.com]
t1nick comments on Mar 8, 2020:
Misleading title. It would have been better to compare this find to Clovis sites in Southern France or east coast of the US. The size of the population involved in the BC site and pyramid building Egypt are significantly different. The level of technology between the two cultures is significantly different. I guess my complaint is the unnecessary sensationalism by comparing to Pyramid building Egypt, when in reality they have absolutely no relationship to one another whatsoever. We have had substantial proof that migrations from Siberia to North America began sometime around 30,000 years before present(BP). At the same time a migration form southern France (Clovis tradition) to the east coast on North America occurrred following the edge of the Continental -Polar ice sheet. Micronesian migration to Central and South America was actively happening during this time. Why bring Egypt into the picture at all? Poor journalism.

t1nick comments on Mar 7, 2020:
The Bible is based on cultural stories that were passed orally from generation to generation by story tellers. As oral traditions go, they remain pretty true to the main concept but details change with every telling and every story teller. The Bible was first written in 325 CE at the First Council of Nicea, modified again at the Second Council and the Council of Rome. Constantine brought notable elders in, they recounted their oral stories and selected those they wanted to keep, and discard or ignored those they didnt want. They tended to be patriarchal and omitted a number of the female chapters. So in essence the Bible was written 300 years after the so called Christ lived.

t1nick comments on Mar 7, 2020:
The bible is based on an oral tradition passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. That alone renders it unreliable as each teller puts his/her own spin on it to accommodate their telling style. The stories were collected together at the First and Second Councils of Nicea in 325 CE. The Council collected the various stories, picked those that were the most patriarchal ( I doubt they consciously intended to do that) constructed the first Bible.

t1nick comments on Mar 6, 2020:
I do not know if you are an educator or in the education field, but my experience is contrary to your argument. Having taught for 31 years at the high school level, in six different schools, I find religion was a significant part of every school culture. I have taught First Nation for 21 years (and still am). and Ive taught in main stream culture for 10 years. In all that time, the theists drove the culture, if not directly, then indirectly. It was unsafe carreerwise to profess it be known as an atheist or agnostic. When theist teachers or Adminstrstors thought it necessary, they always inserted their beliefs and religious opinions into the circumstance. It was unwise or unacceptable to contradict or challenge them. And I am not known as a shrinking violet. I have fought social, cultural, and racial injustice my entire adult life. Most of the time against my own white privilege peers much to their dismay. But in all that time I knew there was a line I could not cross and keep my job. That line was challenging the ardent theists on the staff. I could council for tolerance and point out errors in stereotypes and judgements. But if a theist wanted a prayer at an assembly, even if half the population were not Christian, it was dangerous to challenge as most teachers are Chrisrian, as are most Administrators, and most parents in the country. Even in First Nation (at least in my present community). Although that wasn't true in my first First Nation community, there Native culture and beliefs were still more intact than many tribes. Although Christianity was encroaching and assimilating religious-cultural beliefs as Christianity is so good at doing.

In general, the variance in the gravitational pull anywhere on Earth is pretty small. Everest, 29,029 ft. When plugged into the gravity equation there is a difference, but in relative terms it pretty small.

I worked for the CDC the summer of 2007. Their scientists are the best in the world. There protocols are almost beyond question. They take their work as serious as a Navy Seal on mission. The reason that the last three pandemics were not any worse is because of the CDC and their methods. I know its popular to criticize an agency because it part of our bureaucracy. I got to thinking about my comment. As can be seen from the phylogeny of the Pongids, Gorilla split with our ancestors around 10 million years before present (MYPD). This actually post-Mesozoic (which ended 65 MYPD). Gorillas branched from the Pongids (Oranatang). Panini (chimps) branched from gorillas. We are 99% genetically similar to chimps. Less than 1% makes us different from chimps. So I stand corrected on the connection between gorilla lineage and our lineage. I'm not wrong on the contemporaneously evolution of our two species.

t1nick comments on Feb 13, 2020:
Not surprising given that following the coastline is a natural and logical decision. If the Bering Strait connection is true (evidence would support this conclusion) then a shell ridden in Btitish Columbia is only logical. The internal ice free corridor through the center of Alaka was one route, the coast was another. If migration began between 30,000 and 20,000 years ago, an 11,000 year old maiden makes sense.

Being able to ponder the question of "what is the meaning of life" is a luxury of the few. The average individual has little time for meandering the posits and postulizations of the scholars. The demands of putting together a living day to day occupies their waking thoughts. When they do take the time it usually involves giving over their conscious thoughts to a religion to save them.from the uncomfortable state of unknowing and the unpredictability of their future. Philosophizing is the realm of the more fortunate.
