@moosepucky I'm inclined to agree in general. But geopolitics is so complicated. The oil and gas companies are so invested in the crude oil fields in Saudi Arabia, as well as the pipeline out of Uzbeckastan(?). And all the politicians are in the pocket of oil and gas. Besides the devil you know can be better than the devil you do not. A Sunni- Shiaa blowout in the Middle East could suck the rest of the world on for a WWIII or similar. The world is still dependrnt upon fossil fuel and the area is one of the major suppliers. A fight for control of those resources would bring in China, North Korea, Pskistan, Afghanistsn, India, Saudi Arsbia, Iraq, and Iran just to mention a few. It would also bring in nuclear weapons to the Middle East (i.e. besides Pakistan and India). Damned if you do, damed if you don't. The Middle East in general is a hair trigger. Go figure.

Once again the president has veered into the grey area of legality. The Constitution states the President has the power, and obligation to act if imminent danger threatens the US. That's the catch point. By using the phrase "imminent" he has legally justified his action. He was legally justified in taking Suleimani out on that pretense. Only Congress can declare war. However, here is the problem. The president has not defined what he considers imminent enough to violate our agreement with Iraq. It is yet to be determined how his actions will affect what actions will happen next. Instead of ridfing the world of one despicable individual, he may have just lead us into a war. Time will tell? Trump is not known for his intelligence, his wisdom, or an understanding of foreign affairs. What does say about his followers? As stated in a previous post, having lied over 15 000 times publically to the country on television, how are we to beleive him. He has no credibility. He knows how to massage the law so that everything he does meets the bare minimum of legality. Given the attacks on the structure of the democracy and Trumps almost constant attack on the Constitution, no one can in good faith say that they support Trump and at the same time support our Democracy. https://fas.org/irp/agency/doj/olc092501.html

@Trajan61 As usual wrong on two counts. 1) That OK represents most or even an important part of the world, and 2) That most people throughout the world (majority of 7 billion) agree with you. They do not. Many of that 7 billion are not aware or not in a position to do anything about it (just trying to survive,). But even without this group, the number of educated persons that are aware and are concerned, are such as to render the population of OK as statistically insignificant. OK could disappear and the world would barely register its passing. Any loss to oil-gas production would be compensated for in a relatively short time.

@BryanLV I am fully aware of cognitive dissonance. You flail at a windmill called "Socialism" without giving acknowledgement to the distinction between types of Socialism and to the European Nations that have made it work to the advantage of its citizens Just as their are multiple styles of Socialism, there are multiple forms of Capitalism. We are presently living and operating in a predatory / cannibalistic version of capitalism. It is ultimately disfunctional and will consume itself. Capitalism does not need to follow this form. The Robber Barons of the 1920's tried and brought us the Great Depression. We practiced his immediately prior to 2016 and we got the Great Recession. There is a more moderate level that reflects a more organic / evolutionary model which is long term thinking and benefits all. Not just those with access to capital and resources.

@Word In New Mexico, we are in flux this year as to diploma and graduation requirements. As it stands by the end of their senior year, a student make their "cut scote" on one of the various normative that they are required to tsk6e; NWEA, SBA, ACT, or the PARCC. Believe or not, they take all these tests yearly. It is required. Teachers generally agree that the students are over tested. So seniors must make their cut scores in four areas: reading, language and grammer, math and science. Failure to attain cut scores means that they get a diploma, but the diploma is not designated as not having achieved academic success, but have completed all the credits necessary to graduate. Getting all cut scores earns them a certified, and academically successful designation. The distinction can be significant depending on the coarse after graduation a student wants to pursue. This is the last year we will be offering the PARCC to seniors. We've done away with the NWEA this year. All teachers must research and find an " End of Course" [EOC] assessment for each individual academic subject. If seniors haven't achieved cut scores on the above the standard normative test (PARCC, SBA, or ACT), they have one last chance on the individual EOC. Next year the state is thinking of inserting the SAT as are normative test for graduation. You might say it's kind of a cluster fuck.

@Word The problem is that the tests do not test the way that content is taught. Conversely, content is not taught the way questions are structured on the normative tests. It a problem for teachers. There is not enough support from the home in most school districts to teach the way questions on the test are structured. It is considered an educational sin to teach to the test. Many schools have been chastised and fined for teaching to the test. This means getting copies of test questions in advance, then prepping students accordingly. That doesnt mean one cannot use practice questions that are similar and drilling in those. However, doing this you sacrifice content coverage and are chastised by District / School Administration for not covering your Stadards. It's a catch 22 regardless.

I concur. One can be Pro-Palestinian and be Pro-Isreal and still be staunchly opposed to specific Isreali policies and actions and not be anti-semetic. To oppose a policy on the grounds that is unfair, apartheid even, does not make me opposed to Isreali or Judism. My ex was Jewish and she concurs with me on the inherent immorality of Isreali's policy towards the Palestinians.

The definition of secular is basically agnosticism and atheism: ·lar /ˈsekyələr/ adjective adjective: secular 1. denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis. "secular buildings" 2. CHRISTIAN CHURCH (of clergy) not subject to or bound by religious rule; not belonging to or living in a monastic or other order. https://www.google.com/search?q=define+secular&oq=define+secular=chrome..69i57j0l3.6312j1j7=ms-android-verizon=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8 So by guilt of association, being a long-time member of Agnostic.com, I think it's safe to say the we, by definition, are looking for a secular place to more or less cavort. I don't know about "safe space", but I too tire of all the Christian talk. I avoid the religious groups on this site for that reason. But this post came in under general hellos. @WilliamFleming IMO those flashes of insight are no so inexplicable as one would think. Take a logical, aware person with some scientific training that is skilled at observation and recognizing patterns and put them in a situation where they use thes cskills. Place them in a time when knowledge has lead the field to a point where previous work has laid the foundation of understanding and ready for a significant advancement. Movement to the next level remains within reach through good scientific procedures and observation. Provide them this accessible knowledge and place them in a situation whereby they can apply this knowledge and be able to freely experiment with this knowledge, realizing that they are not the only participant engaged in this endeavor and activity. Probabilities tells us that one of these individuals will make the necessary connections and advance the knowledge to the next level. Sure its conscious awareness, but not so mysterious as a flash of insight that comes from out of the blue. It is part of a logical continuum whose foundation is lain and it becomes the next logical extension.

t1nick replies on Nov 26, 2019:
My friend too philosophical and metaphysical. IMO, the answer is much more simple than that. The great insights and advances you allude to, were great, but not unprecedented or unexpected. Most knowledge is on a continuum. Multiple people are on the same continuum stream. Some arrive there sooner than others. Perhaps due to heightened intelligence, fortune of being in the right place at the right time, or other unknowable, but explicable causes. Regardless, these individuals must have been a receptive vessel or they would not have made the next step to greatness. One example is Darwin. Darwin much influenced by Charles Lyell and Carolis Linnaes. His opportunity was living in an age where exploration and Natural Histiry was on the ascendance. His gift was his superb power of observation and pulling disparate pieces of evidence together and fashioning them into a larger, more encompassing picture. But Darwin was not alone. A few years following Darwin, Wallace returned from a similar circum-global trip. He came to the same conclusions as Darwin without ever seeing Darwin's work, as Darwin had not published yet. In fact Darwin and Wallace presented on the same night to the Royal Society of London. Had Wallace presented first we might be saying Wallacism instead of Darwinism. The point being, that most significant discoveries are part of a larger intellectual trend that is moving in that direction already. All built upon the knowledge of scientists that came before. Of course it takes a receptive and compatible vessel to recieve the new information and move it to the next level. The same is true for Einstein, Newton, and others attributed with great discoveries. This is not to diminish the uniqueness and intellectual perspicacity of these great individuals. But it's not some ethereal secret of an unknown force or altered reality. Simply a special person with the acumen to understand what was before him/her andmove forward with it.
