My Semester With the Snowflakes
t1nick comments on Jan 2, 2020:
Alright William I"m back. I read the article. I can appreciate his journey. I come from a a lower class working family. I was the first in my family to attend and graduate college. But that is not the "stranger in a strange land" part of my journey. I have been a high school science teacher for 31 years. 21 years in and among Native American students and schools. I lived a good portion of that on isolated indian reservations, where I was the minority. I served at the pleasure of the tribe (and still do) and the federal government. I learned how to walk in two worlds, just like my students were expected to do. A decade of my teaching careers was spent in Hispanic communities teaching science. Another period of a "stranger in a strange land" as a minority. I served at their pleasure and discretion. I never accepted mediocrity in myself, or in my students. I have been known as a "nerd" and an intellectual by my peers, my family, and even by my collegiate peers when I was enmeshed in degree program. Statistically, I should never have attended college in the first place, let alone attaining a PhD and four other degrees. I appreciate the authors journey and contrary to my original response, concur with his and your sentiments.

Your post pre-supposes that persons disagreeing with are automatically wrong as your opinion is the right one. That by engaging with you, you will necessarily by the rightness of your bias, show them the error of their ways and will come to your way of thinking. Their is a certain arrogance and presumption in your challenge and approach. Words matter and the way you state them matter. It is a problem you and I have encountered before. The way that you address items automatically introduces a bias ( specifically a bias in your favor).

t1nick comments on Jan 1, 2020:
A proclivity for abstract thought gives the human species the ability to philosophize about things beyond mere survival drives. This same ability allows humans to shape a projectile point from a common cobble, or a steel beam from nodule of iron. The last morphological increase in human brain capacity to 1500 cc, saw an increase in the logical-mathematical parts of the brain. This advancement increased the abstract thinking abilities, but did little to the reinforce the instinctual aspects of the brain. As logical-abstract thinking dominated, a greater attention in this area began to subvert the evolutionary instinctual messages that keeps a species "fitness" for their environment. The greater our successes in suppressing nature and separating ourselves from our instinctual selves, the more dysfunctional we became. Evolution doesn't necessarily work on a specific time line. We have been evolutionary unfit for our environment (the planet) since the advent of agriculture allowed for permanent settlements. There is a point of diminishing returns and evolutionary processes will reclaim the species. Either through extinction or massive population reduction worldwide.
ERUDITION.

Most of the Republicans that scream about Bernie and Socialism, do not even understand what Socialim is in any of its forms. Let alone Democratic Socialism. They would rather be raped by big corporation than agree to share with community. Sounds a lot like Libertarians. They are running away shitting their pants because they have no idea what they are talking about. My guess they were same lot that were members of the John Birch Society in the 70's. They ran away screaming "Communism, Communism, the sky is falling". Yet never knew what Communism was beyond a word. They were poorly educated then, and remain so now.

When I was an archaeologist (1975-1982), the bane of our field was when some researcher attempted to ascribe religious attributes and meanings to some new discovery or artifact. It was quite common in the first millennia of the field of archaeology for people to describe any previously unknown object that was not immediately obvious as religious or serving a religious purpose. New Archaeology practices required us to describe the artifact, but not attempt to give it an unprovable religious function. We could suggest potential uses based on the physical attributes of the object, but not ascribe subjective attributes.

All cultures have their own method of keeping track of time. When I was teaching on the Hopi Indian Reservation, the New Year was the beginning of the planting season. It occurs in January when the sun can be seen rising in the exact center of a rock formation on the eastern side of the Hopi valley, known as the sun alter. It is decided and declared by a specific priest who resides on First Mesa. Sixteen days after this declaration, bean sprouts are planted and kept in the kiva until the actual planting time occurs. This marks the start of the religious cycle and a new year.

t1nick comments on Dec 24, 2019:
Background on Patheos: Patheos is a non-denominational, non-partisan online media company providing information and commentary from various religious and nonreligious perspectives. Upon its launch in May 2009, the website was primarily geared toward learning about religions through a reference library and other peer-reviewed resources on 27 global religions and worldviews. In its current form, the site also hosts more than 450 blogs in eleven "Faith Channels," offering commentary and news from these perspectives in topics including politics, institutions, culture, sacred texts, history, lifestyle, entertainment, family life, and business. Patheos is the largest English language religion and spirituality site in the world, while the Catholic, Progressive Christian, Nonreligious, and Pagan Channels constitute the largest web presence for their respective traditions. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patheos — Last week came the announcement that religion site Beliefnet has acquired Patheos, the far more popular home of a wide variety of religious blogs, include a vibrant Pagan channel. While Beliefnet also once hosted Pagan bloggers, since being acquired by the Christian-focused BN Media company, those writers all eventually moved on. With the new purchase, it has been stated that plans thus far are to keep the two sites independent of each other. A Wild Hunt investigation into BN Media buying Beliefnet in June, 2016, disclosed the company’s focus: BN Media seems to be a different sort of owner, if their two largest initiatives, Affinity4 and Cross Bridge, are any indication. In short, it seems they are a conservative “family friendly” Christian group. All you have to do is pay attention to all the subtle buzz-words. . . . It doesn’t paint a very rosy picture of future interfaith interactions and diverse viewpoints on Beliefnet. https://wildhunt.org/2016/09/beliefnet-acquires-patheos-pagan-bloggers-guardedly-optimistic.html

On a side note, I've never encountered RT News before. So I took the opportunity to do some background research. No judgement, just background. State-owned RIA Novosti news agency, which founded RT in 2005, is one of the largest in Russia. Its chairperson is Svetlana Mironyuk, who has modernised the agency since her appointment in 2003. RIA Novosti has stated it helped establish RT, but is "neither a sponsor nor a backer of Russia Today." Mikhail Seslavinsky, in charge of the Federal Agency on Press and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation asserted in 2005 that "Russia Today will come as an independent company". Under Russian law RT is an independent organisation. A Pew Research survey of the most popular news videos on YouTube in 2011–12, found RT to be the top source with 8.5 percent of posts. However of these, 68 percent consisted of first-person video accounts of dramatic worldwide events, likely acquired by the network rather than created by it. In 2013, RT became the first television news channel to reach 1 billion views on YouTube.[14] In 2014 its main (English) channel was reported have 1.4 million subscribers. In 2015 The Daily Beast reported that RT hugely exaggerated its global viewership and that its most-watched segments were on apolitical subjects. Between 2013 and 2015, more than 80% of RT's viewership was for videos of accidents, crime, disasters, and natural phenomena, such as the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor event, with less than 1% of viewership for political videos. In late 2015, all of the 20 most watched videos on its main channel, totaling 300 million views were described as "disaster/novelty". Of the top 100, only small number could be categorized as political with only one covering Ukraine. The most popular video of Russian president Putin shows him singing "Blueberry Hill" at a 2010 St. Petersburg charity event. In 2017, The Washington Post analysed RT's popularity and concluded that "it’s not very good at its job" as "Moscow’s propaganda arm" due to its relative unpopularity. RT has disputed both The Daily Beast 's and The Washington Post 's assessments and has said that their analyses used outdated viewership data. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_(TV_network)#Organization

t1nick comments on Dec 22, 2019:
Once the sacrifice is finished, the sacrificial animal is often divided up and eaten. This doesn't apply to the virgin or the other human sacrifices, of coarse. That is unless you from the highlands of New Guinea. Lol Environmental anthropology suggests that in many cultures sacrifices occur when the population is suffering from a protein deficiency. It's a way to reintroduce protein back into the diet when most needed. For instance, in India where cattle are sacred animals. If a Brahma cow should accidently be killed, say as a result of an accident between it and a lorrie. After proper ceremonies, the animal will be butchered and shared out. In a country plagued by poverty and malnutrition, this is one way to get protein to the local population. This is of coarse if I am remembering my lessons correctly from my anthro degree. It's been awhile.

Do you approve capital punishment?
t1nick comments on Dec 22, 2019:
I'm not known as some one who generally argues economic issues. In fact I greatly dislike economic. However, when looking at the capital punishment question; economically it is cheaper for society to keep a prisoner in prison for life, than it is to place them on death row. Given the cost of the numerous appeals, it is by far more expensive to society to sentence to prisoners to death, rather than give them life in prison. Neither options are satisfactory. But since our prisons are not set up to rehabilitate, but rather to turn a one time offender into a life time criminal, we do not have a lot of options. Especially since the majority of prisons are now privately owned. Just ask Jeff Sessions

t1nick comments on Dec 22, 2019:
I am a scientist by vocation. The definition of a scientist includes being skeptical as a driving force for seeking new knowledge. So my conversion was evidence based.

Ideal role of religion in society?
t1nick comments on Dec 21, 2019:
Religion is a crutch to assist people with the regards to the vastness and hugeness of the Universe. This type of mental masturbation is only practiced by humans. And then, only because we have the capability of abstract thought. This abstract thought capability allowed us to survive in a generally unfriendly world. I imagine early humans looked up into the night sky and were impressed with its vastness and expanse. Just like it is to most people today, it was probably incomprehensible and confounding. Humans do not like unanswered questions. The lack a definable answer leads to unsettled feelings. This nagging unclarity tends to irritate and aggravate. So in order to assuage the irritation, they rationalized their world around them. Likewise, the human mind doesn't deal with, what appears to be disorder (it's not really), so they impose a false order, once again to ease their mind. Humans like to control their environment, so they seek ways to exact a control by declaring a controlling Godhead(s) of some sort. Even in a modern world of science, many need religion's rationalization to deal with the vastness. It is not until large numbers of humans venture into space will the human paradigm be significantly changed. Seeing the unlimitedness of space, "in space", only then will humans realize how truly insignificant they are in the larger scheme of things. Perhaps then might they give up the folly of rationalizing an order that doesnt exist, and accept the order that does exist.

My ex-wife was Jewish. She was a progressive and had no problem with my beliefs. Just exited a relationship with a Christian women. In neither case was religion a problem. Have been an atheist for 45 years and was upfront about my beliefs.
If this is true then conservatives are going after him. That seems interesting.

No, CT is a centrist Christian rag. The extremes that constitute Trump's base do not generally read this magazine according to its editor in chief. So this article probably will not change minds. They are too invested in Trump to turn back now. One talking head does see it as the first crack in the Trump facade. But most of the far right Evangelical ministers are already circling the wagons and lambasting and condemning CT magazine.

And there is a problem with death being the end. Nothing more exciting as that other than the decomposition of the soft tissue and returning of nutrients to the soil to be re-uptaked by other plants. Thus keeping the cycle going.

The Bible Belt (especially OK) remains as a bastion of race hatred, bigotry, and white privilege as witnessed by a few on this site over the last year and a half. But Blacks were not the only population victimized by upstanding Oklahomans. Historically, Native Americans and now Hispanics had and still do suffer much the same fate.

Probably for sake of increasing traffic for both groups. But the two disciplines, while similar are very different. I have been a professional in both fields. But, I do not think that would be a significant problem with this group.

For the most part I concur. Agnostics hedge (aka. Pascals Wager) atheists have made up their minds (perhaps to obstinate at times). I'm not sure about the Meyers-Briggs ranking. I'm extroverted in the classroom, introverted in public.
