How many people are familiar with Plato's Republic?
WilliamFleming comments on Nov 26, 2019:
Our perception of reality is just an illusion, and I think the illusion is less real than a shadow world—it is a total fabrication created in our thoughts. Underlying reality is of a different order of existence and can not be understood in terms of the space/time/objects model. There is no ...
t1nick replies on Nov 26, 2019:
My friend too philosophical and metaphysical. IMO, the answer is much more simple than that. The great insights and advances you allude to, were great, but not unprecedented or unexpected. Most knowledge is on a continuum. Multiple people are on the same continuum stream. Some arrive there sooner than others. Perhaps due to heightened intelligence, fortune of being in the right place at the right time, or other unknowable, but explicable causes. Regardless, these individuals must have been a receptive vessel or they would not have made the next step to greatness. One example is Darwin. Darwin much influenced by Charles Lyell and Carolis Linnaes. His opportunity was living in an age where exploration and Natural Histiry was on the ascendance. His gift was his superb power of observation and pulling disparate pieces of evidence together and fashioning them into a larger, more encompassing picture. But Darwin was not alone. A few years following Darwin, Wallace returned from a similar circum-global trip. He came to the same conclusions as Darwin without ever seeing Darwin's work, as Darwin had not published yet. In fact Darwin and Wallace presented on the same night to the Royal Society of London. Had Wallace presented first we might be saying Wallacism instead of Darwinism. The point being, that most significant discoveries are part of a larger intellectual trend that is moving in that direction already. All built upon the knowledge of scientists that came before. Of course it takes a receptive and compatible vessel to recieve the new information and move it to the next level. The same is true for Einstein, Newton, and others attributed with great discoveries. This is not to diminish the uniqueness and intellectual perspicacity of these great individuals. But it's not some ethereal secret of an unknown force or altered reality. Simply a special person with the acumen to understand what was before him/her andmove forward with it.

Read *The Republic* in college. Haven't heard the interpretation that religion is the cave. It can fit in our modern times. For me, I always thought *The Matrix* was a good modern day Cave allegory where humanity is born into a world of false images and perceptions with no idea of true reality.

t1nick replies on Nov 16, 2019:
@blahblah Conspiracy theories by their very nature cannot work and do not work in 99% of hypothetical existence. Conspiracy usually (not always) , but usually involve large numbers of individual players all keeping a secret. E.g. Derp State, Area 51, the famed moon landing. This condition is almost impossible for the human species. Secrets are power. Once you have a secret you have power over those that do not. However, you cannot wield that power unless the other party knows you have a secret. Once the cat is out of the bag, the other parties will demand proof that you have a secret as human curiosity is generally unquenchable. The only way to offer proof is to give up oart or all of the secret. Once that is done, it's no longer a secret and no longer a conspiracy. Sure many individuals can keep a secret, but not all. Human weakness to prove one specialness, and out comes the secret. Power is covered, but do easily given away in proving you had the power you claimed. Conspiracy theories do not hold water under scrutiny.

@Allamanda I concur with that, but doesn't mean that more deliberate thought is free thought. I understand the point individuals are trying to make. But it's like popular trends, at some point the rebellion becomes the crowd and it's no longer rebellion, its following the crowd (even if the crowd is limited on size and a minority). Take the punk rock trend. At first it was embraced by only a few who wanted to rebel against mainstream society and morals. But even they were not free thinkers, as those feelings, thoughts. and sentiments had existed for generations and millenia. I'll give credit to them for acting on these ideas, whereas others just thought or complained about it. But once it became a "trend" it no longer was free thought. It was copy catting, emulating to be more exact.
OK so we all get bored to death with the meaning of 'spiritual' question.

@Fernapple I don't know if their is such a thing as "not thinking". There's fallacious thinking, specious thinking, but these do not qualify as not thinking. @blahblah I think most are pathologic narcissists (like our President) that convince themselves of their own self importance. They become the messiah and create a self-fulfilling prophesy using the bible as a means to an end. On a side note, given hypotheticals; given the right circumstances Trump could easily step into that role (in fact to a certain extent he has with his supporters). How many Evangelical pastors have said he has sent by God, and Trump has repeated that sentiment himself.

@JackPedigo Hypothetically, I think the last cranial growth from erectus to sapian witnessed an explosion in the analytical, logico-mathematical centers in our brains. This was needed for the tool making and abstract thought processes that were keeping us alive. The advancement of tool manufacturing to aid in survival, along with advanced linguistic centers in our brain, and the rise of complex social structures allowed humans to survive in a brutal world in which they were disadvantaged. In the process, the attributes that aided in physical survival, began moving away from our instinctual self. We separated ourselves from the evolutionary messages that allowed our species to maintain evolutionary fitness. We sheilded ourselves from the relationships that allows a species to persist. Evolution is slow in geologic time. We are a young species geologically speaking. IMHO we have exceeded our evolutionary fitness and a day of reckoning will catch up with us. We are a species who can do anything technologically, but have lost the checks and balances that instincts bring and forgot how to ask, "Should we".

@FearlessFly Here's what I found out: NewsGuard Technologies was founded in 2018 by Steven Brill and L. Gordon Crovitz, who serve as co-CEOs.[2] Investors include the Knight Foundation and Publicis.[3] The NewsGuard extension is installed in browsers and warns users when they view content from what it considers are fake news websites. Professional journalists employed by NewsGuard Technologies score news sites on their reliability and general trustworthiness. The analysis is designed to be transparent and includes the name of the staffer who analyzed the site. Sites that score at least 60 out of 100 points based on nine criteria display a green icon next to their name, and ones that score lower get a red icon. Users can optionally read more information, including how the sites fared in each criterion.[4] The extension can also highlight potential conflicts of interest, such as websites that do not disclose that they are financed by lobbying groups.[5] NewsGuard determines a website's overall credibility score based on a number of criteria. These include: The frequency of publication of inaccurate information The extent of sourcing and original reporting of information The degree of demarcation between news and opinion journalism The accuracy of headlines, including the use of clickbait headlines The degree of disclosure of the website's ownership, as well as the political position. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NewsGuard

@JackPedigo Technically you are right, but is gaining traction. It becoming used much more frequently. A geologic era is a subdivision of geologic time that divides an eon into smaller units of time.[1] The Phanerozoic Eon is divided into three such time frames: the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic (meaning "old life", "middle life" and "recent life") that represent the major stages in the macroscopic fossil record. These eras are separated by catastrophic extinction boundaries, the P-T boundary between the Paleozoic and the Mesozoic and the K-Pg boundary between the Mesozoic and the Cenozoic.[2] There is evidence that catastrophic meteorite impacts played a role in demarcating the differences between the eras. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Era_(geology) A geological period is one of the several subdivisions of geologic time enabling cross-referencing of rocks and geologic events from place to place. The rocks formed during a period belong to a stratigraphic unit called a system. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geological_period For more academic and detailed information might I suggest the website: http://palaeos.com/. @JackPedigo I teach it as part of my College Geology curriculum. It is apropos as geologic time is partially based on major changes to the surface of the Earth. Never before in the history of the Earth has one species (not counting cyanobacteria which started the march of life on the planet -a significant event to be sure) impacted the Earth so negatively as have humans.

@Triphid William, I like Triphid do know what oil and petroleum products. I teach college geology. Just because it was made via natural processes, doesnt mean that it was meant to be on the surface and consumed as an energy source. Occasionally sources reach the surface through faulting or similar geomorphic processes. But in general the reason its is so far underground is that it took all that pressure, heat, and time to lithify it. It does n occur on the surface naturally, that is why there are no natural habitats adapted to living in it.

@WilliamFleming We've had this discussion before. You have a slightly naive impression as to what is natural, what is benign and what is not. You make too many assumptions and ignore the contrary evidence. Just because it occurs on Earth or is made by humans does not necessarily make it good or beneficial. You seem to have an Evangelical perspective of humans and their supposed dominion over the earth and everything on it.

t1nick replies on Nov 1, 2019:
@WilliamFleming I'm sorry but you are wrong. Most of the oil will not remain in the US, but will be bought and will be sent overseas. Second not all things created by nature are good. Hydrocarbons never completely disappear and do long term irreparable damage. It's possible to eventually hide all outward signs on casual inspection. But upon closer inspection the habitat is altered, soils are contaminated and the biome is permanently altered. Its cavalier to dismiss damage done by spilled hydrocarbons as okay because it's a natural, organic substance. There is too much scientific evidence to the contrary.

t1nick replies on Nov 1, 2019:
The point is not whether it's old or new. Rather it is that all pipelines leak at some point. Total clean up is usually very expensive or impossible. The environmental damage they do to natural habits is often irreparable. The economic advantage they provide to an area is generally short lived and most often transient. Most of the proceeds and profits are not spent in, and do not remain in the US economy.
Found this in my latest novel.
