I've been teaching government and the Constitution this summer. You are right about the need to protect 1st Amendment. But there is one limitation to free speech. If the sperch involves an overt sense of violence or threat of physical, psychological, or other harm is not protected. A speech where an outrighr threat is spoken or applied is not protected. This includes such actions as cross burnings, which are classified as an overt psychological threat, or a hangman's noose outside someones house, school, or church. That's why it is illegal to yell "fire" in a darkened theater. The implied threat of harm or injury as a result of peoples reaction to the threat is not protected.

The sad thing is that his core supporters are like starving dogs. Trump throws them a piece of meat laced with social and cultural poison. He undermines our democracy and our Constitution with his meat offerings. His constituency are so hungry for recognition and a pat on the head that are willing to swallow the poisoned meat even they know something smells amiss. To top it off, these are same people that called themselves true Patriots and defenders of the country. Yet they are ones supporting the destruction of the country they purport to defend. Hypocracy and ignorance, mixed with immediate gratification makes for a deadly mix. Deadly for our country that is.

@WilliamFleming I have no interest in distributing wealth just for distributing the wealth. I have a well developed work ethic and so do those that need to hold two to three jobs to get by. They have to. I get the feeling that your world experience has been limited to those like yourself. Not that you haven't been exposed to other lifestyles, but your incredulity to believe how many are near or below poverty level reinforces this observation. I get the feeling that you do not know what it means to have no substantial choices. Yes employment is up in the country, but do you realize what kind of jobs that primarily comprises? Most of the new jobs that contributed to thst dtatistic have been low paying service industry without any health benefits or employee protections. Many employers hire employees for just under fulltime so they do not have to pay benefits and health. A report on NPR (yes liberal but so much more honest than 90% of popular media) this morning that about 10 billion dollars a year is stolen from immigrants and unregistered employees by unscrupolous employers. All because they know these people have no recourse to get their pay.

With all due respect, I disagree with all your points and assertions except maybe the last. Your measure of well off isn't consistent with most facts and statistics I've come across. 5% of the population in this country has more wealth than the 70% lowest combined. I do not call that equitable. I teach in marginalized communities, and have for 30 years. My anecdotal evidence alone doesn't jibe with your assertions. When is the last time you worked two or three jobs just to put food on the table for your family, and thats not filet mignon either. That situation is not an exception to the rule, but the norm outside of white America. Whites have controlled the economics in this country since before 1776. Minority mobility has be hampered and obstacles thrown in their path for generations to keep them from aspiring to the next level. Yes our life has bern made easier with technology, but it has also lengthened our work time. Easier to get more done, therefore can put in more hours to get even more done. Most professional people in America are workaholics. They put in longer hours because they can and they find work often more satifying than their home life. So with the 70% of the lowest population working two to three jobs, and the professionals being workaholics by choice, I guess everything is just hunky dory. Hmmm.

One of the problems is the influence of the evangelical right. Around 1000 CE (AD), the catholic church decided thst God was perfection, and man ( not women or minorities by the way) was made in God's image. Therefore. being in his image, man was as near to perfect as anything on this planet (how wrong they were). As such, everything else on the planet was beneath mankind. They declared that God had placed all the plants and animals on this planet for mankind to use as he (notice again the masculine) saw fit. It was alright to exploit, wantonly kill, maim, or abuse as desired. Now to today. Evangelicals today take that philosophy as gospel (excuse the cliche). They are opposed to regulation of the environment as that takes away Gods intent and their right to exploit unabashedly. They feel superior to everything that is not mankind (once again the masculine). Being in power asdures that what we leave our grandkids tomorrow is a wasteland only for for Evangelicals.

@Happy_Killbot Interesting analogy. So if I get your explanation, the ultimate entropic state is that that is most statistacally likely to occur. I am not sure entropy works that way. The convenient popular definition of entropy is the breakdown of the natural order, followed by a move to the simpliest state. However, I too find this too simplistic. When I was participating in workshops at the Santa Fe Institute, an Institute dedicated to studying Complex Systems Theory in all fields, I was exposed to multiple examples of Chaos Theory and entropic deterioration models. One of the things that was made evident in the models is that all the models moved toward entropy, but not always to the exact same end or in the same way. Even when the stsrting conditions were identical. Unexpected events on the way to entropic culmination caused perturbations in the process. These perterbations sent the model on a different deterioration path and thus created similar, but distinctly different final outcomes. Sometimes the terminus was only different in minute degrees, sometimes the terminus hardly resembled the other models. Does this represent randomness? Do we define randomness as something totally unrecognizable and unpredictable? I do not think so. Does randomness represent something inexplicable? Again I do not beleive so. Randomness as I understand it means that the system reverts to a base energy level and form that is not always the same or even statistically predictable.

But, in counter to your point Zesty, just because the far right made a pact with the devil (so to speak) doesn't mean that the far left had to have contributed to movement toward fascism and Nazism. May have, but there is no wriiten law that they had to have had a significant contribution. A modern day myth that when one side acts in a deleterious way, that the opposing philosophy must have contributed and acted similarly. This is part of that common clarion call oft voiced by the far right when they get criticized, "Same to you, but of it", and "Well they did it too". Which usually proceeds an episode of denial and schist throwing

It doesn't serk or need permission to exist and operate. The same is true of entropy and randomness. The study of the phenomenon is called complex systems theory (i.e. chaos theory). Hillary, whether you liked her or not (irrelevant) was held to a higher standard than any male candidate ever was. Her every gesture, statement or move was analyzed in microscopic detail. Her ability was questioned continually, not based on record and accomplishments, but on gender grounds, if not openly and overtly, then snidely and on the side. The same is happening with the female Democratic candidates running now. I don't know what type of isolation you are experiencing in Appalachia that you can not see the disparity or the realities. Intetesting appeasement. It is true one cannot dictate what another state may or not do. Doesn't mean we are not able to criticize what we see as immoral or inappropriate at the very least. To your point. Yes there are females in the state. The point was that inside the Alabama Senate, only the males were the one to vote in the affirmative for this law. The female Senators refused to back it and voted against it. Yes to another respondent, Kay Ives the is the female govenor, and she signed the bill into law. To another respondent, many of the males who backed the the new bill and claim to be opposed to abortions are not doing it out of compassion. Like rape which is not a crime about sex, instead its a crime about power. The power of a male to dominate and demean a women. Like rape, many of these males support it because they wantt to maintain the control over women. Why do I say this? Most if not all these men are Southern Baptists oe Evangelicals. Part of the practiced (practiced) tenets of these two religions involves keeping women supplicant to men. The ol' " barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen" syndrome. The so called"traditional family" structure. The primary purpose behind this bill, the heartbeat bills in Georgia and Ohio, and the upcoming law in Missouri are about getting one of these bills to the Supreme Court. Given the new structure of the Supreme Court with five ultra-conservative judges, they feel that they are positioned to challenge and overthrow Roe v. Wade. They feel the timing is right. In the meantime, women in these states must suffer by being denied Planned Parenthood prenatal and natal services. Being denied birth control, and being denied the ability to control their own bodies. I don't see bills aimed at mens ED! That is how they are playing politics with womens bodies. Alabama is generally the 48th or 49th out of 50 states in most categories. They are in fact a bunch of old, or middle old white men. They are blindly Christian fundamentalist and reason accordingly. Before someone claims that I am saying there are no intelligent, not so old persons in the state, I am sure there are. But they don't hold the reigns of power.

@altschmerz Phillips made a mistake in his assumption to appraoch the group. Phillips had just been participating in a peaceful protest of Native American rights. I live in a Native American community and I am very familiar with the meaning of drumming and song. The drum and song are considered sacred. When Phillip and his comanion came across the Catholic boys and the Sons of Hebrew exchanging insults, he thought the drum would calm things down. He made an incorrect assumption. He assumed that everybody would respond the way his people do. But outsiders do not necessarily understand the meaning of the drum. Phillip and companion inserted himself between the two groups hoping to add distance between to t two groups. The conflgration began when the Son of Hebrew (a radical black group) began exchaning insults. I have not heard a good eye witness to explain how their confrontation began. Suggestion has it the the sons of hebrew began the insults. Previous eye witnesses saw the Catholic boys harrassing women futher up the Mall earlieer that afternoon. They were making cat calls and whistles and inappropriate comments according to the witness. So these boys were anything but innocent. The fault lies in the Catholic boys chaperones. They did little of nothing to corral the boys before or after. The group was waiting for a bus, and could have moved to another bus stop at the beginning of the confrontation, but chose to stay there and engage the group harrassing them.

@Happy_Killbot Thats all well and good. But IMO I do not think that humans in large groups are capable of self-regulating. As an example, if were up to the greater American population, we would still be experiencing Jim Crow across the nation. It took government to move to realize the elimination of that scurge. Likewise, if we left it up to business and industry, the Chatanooga River would still be burning from chemicals dumped upstream by chemical businesses. It took government to implement the 1972 Clean air and Clean water Acts. My point is that it takes a balancing act between too much government and too little government. Humans are incapable of self-regulation beyond the tribal level. Usual societal checks and balances break down and all other checks and balances beyond that are artificial and ultimately do not work for long.

@Happy_Killbot I concur with a lot of this post. Unfortunately. the form of capitalism being practiced today is short sighted and its goal is short term. The present system rewards immediate and short term gain. Colloquially its can be called predatory capitalism or cannibalustic capitalism. It focuses on gaining the maximum profit at any cost with total disregard for outcomes or future impacts. It will cannibalize its own industry fir a quick profit. This is not the only model that capitalism can follow. If it took a long term (Asian model) aporoach or an evolutionary approach, your arguments would have more likely of success. Inan evolutionary modrl, the goal us to maintain the best circumstances for all stakeholders ad infinitum. @Happy_Killbot Too simplistic of an understanding of human nature. Socialism or Communism in its theoretical form seems ideal. But human nature has shown it to be as flawed as capitalism. Libertarian is just another system that requires its participants to follow the rules and 10 000+ years of human history demonstrates it remains untenable. Too many selfish people are drawn to Libertarianism for it to ever have a chance at being successful.
