@powder. Powder, an interesting phenomenon occurred after the fall of the Soviet Union and the dismantling of the Berlin wall. Peace broke out. About a year later the Pentagon announced the closing of several of their bases as it was unjustifiable to keep them open during a time of peace. Military budgets were slashed. Congreesman in districts that had bases scheduled for closing panicked. Unemployment and lost revenue due to the loss of the base scared them shitless. For awhile we tried retooling the military to be a peacetime military (remember Mogadishu), but that didn't work. The industrial-military complex were up in arms in lost contracts and the level of revenue they had become accustomed too. Along came George Bush One, Saddam Hussein and Kuwait. What do you know, we're back in the war business again.

@Lavergne. the phenomrnon for which you speak was known by Sociologists as "hidden poverty". That is to say, persons in poverty invested all their economic resources (i.e. their welfare check) into something like a cadillac in order to appear from the outside like they were successfully participating in the American experience. Often times they would do this at the expense of rent and/or a place to live, sacrificing food and other necessities to perpetuate the myth. Items like cadillacs were seen as status symbols within their community and by having such, they felt owning one elevated their status within this community. Even if they lacked anything beyond the car. Its a complicated social behavior that is experienced at all socio-economic levels (keeping up with Jones). But the Welfare Queen was singled out because they were recieving social assistance and Republicans do not loke the idea of helping out anyone beyond themselves.

Overstatement on all your points. Overtired talking points that do not reflect reality. With regard to the Second Amendment, a fair registration and oversight is not nullification. The First Amendment brings with it responsibilities, which is why it is illegal to yell, "fire" in a darkened theater. A speaker who incites hate and violence and is likely to promulgate a riot is like yelling fire in the theater. The First Amendment does not guarantee all speech without regard to public safety. Are you suggesting and supporting hate speech? The debate over the relevance of the electoral college is not a dissemination of the government. The electoral college was designed and promugated by the southern states to offset the population difference. The southern states were strictly rural at the time and they needed a way to offset the greater population concentration of the industrial north. This disparity is no longer as pronounced as it was when drafted. If the Founders created something enduring, it can stand the scrutiny and modification to the electoral college.

Aryn comments on Apr 7, 2019:
Morals are relative and subjective. There’s no way to judge more or less morality. To some, killing gay people is the moral thing to do. For others, live and let live is the preferred mos. there’s no right or wrong.
t1nick replies on Apr 7, 2019:
@Sticks48 it just goes to show that humans have exceeded their natural imperative and have become evolutionarily unfit and will proceed to extinction in a relatively short time from now (geologically speaking in terms of time).

t1nick replies on Apr 7, 2019:
@Sticks48 As you like to point out, we are ultimately insignificant. I concur in the big picture. The point that I disagree is what you are classifying as morality. Customs, traditions, and practices are not necessarily morals. Just because a particular society engages in acts like slavery, and have no hesitancy about claiming their right to such practices, doesn't make it moral. Humans ability at abstract thought generation allows us as a species to develop very complicated rationals for our actions. Beneath that conscious ability are evolutionary imperatives that guides all life on this planet, with this biological make up, with this atmospheric composition, with this solar radiation range, et. cetera. Humans evolved not only opposable thumbs, the ability to walk upright, and a unique spatial and abstract ability, but we evolved a complex system of communicating (you know this as a musician) and a complex societal organization. Given the puniness of our size, and lacking extaspectacular features like wings, talons, speed, etc. we used that communications ability to develop societies. Along that line, as we were so small and weak compared to our predators of the time (saber-toothed tiger, cave bear), and equally small compared to our prey (mammoth, mastadon, etc), we needed some evolutionary advantage to survive. That advantage was three fold: ability to shape our surroundings (tools & weapons), communicate to develop elaborate hunting strategies to overcome and bring down substantially larger prey, and a way to keep the social order together to make sure aberrant, dysfunctional behavior didnt destroy the fabric of cooperation and group cohesion causing society to fail. Failure of the social fabric meant extinction. We call that understood (often unconscious and not always aware of their presance) set of behaviors that discourages the abberant, dysfunctional actions that would render a society or a species unfit evolutionarily: morals.
OMG, I look so good.

t1nick replies on Apr 7, 2019:
@Sticks48. morality is a cultural ediface on the conscious level, and part of an evolutionary survical mechanism at another level. Cultural is real and does follow imperatives in order for any society to remain viable and maintain its fitness for survival. I was not equating morality with physics or chemistry, just that absolutes do exist. In contrast to the "I'm okay, your okay" trend of the 60's where everybody's opinion hsd equal weight. There are just some opinions that do not rise to the level of acceptable under any conditions.

t1nick replies on Apr 7, 2019:
@Matias. Its a custom, not morality. Not the same thing. Not all customs are moral, rational, or beneficial after awhile. Customs arise out of response (not always from a conscious understanding of why) to many external stimuli. And homosexuality is an often evolutionary response to environmental and population pressures. That's why a gene has been identified with homosexuality in the human genome. We may all carry it hidden in our DNA, but only turns on in select individuals under certain circumstances or under certain conditions. Its like many carry a proclivity to cancer in their DNA, but only switches on under specific conditions.

t1nick replies on Apr 7, 2019:
That's not an answer. Killing gays is never moral. It may be custom or policy, that doesnt make it moral. Science and math teach us there are absolutes. Some things are not okay because somebody thinks it is. Anthropology and evolutionary science tells us that morals serve a function in keeping a culture or society's fitness for survival. There is subjectivity at the surface level, but underneath there is a evolutionary imperative that helps society regulate behavior that is dysfuntional and contrary to that society's ability to maintain its fitness to survive.

@mongo1977 It a hyperbolic question. and a false choice. Any reasonable person would desire no rapes or muders be perpetuated at all. All real facts affirm that its not a wall which is the answer to the problem. Technology at the crossing points are more important. There are segments of the extant wall which needs repair or extension, but its a lot shorter sections than Trump stumped for. Its a false claim that Trumps stupid supporters globbed onto because its a simple sounding answer to a complex problem.
