t1nick replies on Jan 21, 2019:
@jondspen we can start with Jim Crow. You say it ended in 1964 with the voting rights act. Not really overt Jim Crow died, but institutional racism persists up to today. Lets start with criminal justice. There are two types of justice in this country. One for whites, one for people of color. For the same crime, minorities get up to 20x longer prison sentences than whites. Whites are the dominant race perpetuating mass shootings. Yet they are, so far in most instances taken alive. But let a person of color get pulled over for a traffic stop and they are in constant fear of being beaten and abused during arrest, shot without real overt action, or are assumed to have a weapon whether they do or not. Minorities are stopped without substantial reason more than are whites by at least 75x more frequent. Whites feel no compunction about telling a derogatory joke about a minority or a woman with them standing right there in hearing range. Because of power dynamics the recipient is unable to retort. A minority will recieve a physical threat, a women will be labeled a cunt or worse if they complain creating a hostile workplace for her. Applications for loans and services is another area of white privilege. Whites will quite often given a more cursory evaluation on their loan or job application, while a woman or minority will have to endure increased scrutiny in the form of additional background searching, increased questioning, and increased scrutiny. Women and minorities are often paid substantially less for the same job as white males. Everyday, the mainstream white culture sends silent messages to women and minorities. The perpetuation of unfavorable stereotypes is not only common, but extremely prevalent among whites. This often occurs in media depictions, overt looks, media roles, or expectation setting that tell them they are less valuable and less a person by whites, particularly by white males. Parents of minority have to warn their children growing up about the capriciousness and vengefulness of white males. Environmental justice. Minorities having been pushed into lower income real estate and jobs. Obstacles and hurdles established to make sure they cannot rise out of their circumstances. Republican legislatures blocking access to health care and birth control for a population that needs it the most. This barely scratches the surface of what white privilege and what white male privilege is. It is well documented and a fact. There is an incredible amount of research into this issue. All consistent and pointing in the same direction. Its not hard to find if you look. The statistics do not lie. They are scientifically carried out studies, set up to control for inherent biases and doubled checked for correct ...

@Trajan61 No, these people represent leaders to a contigency of the American population. They have influence with their following. To ignore them is to open yourself up to being blindsided at some time down the line. Sharpton is an ardent supporter of black rights, and he is a powerful influence in the black community. By meeting with Sharpton, Obama could formulate the response that the Administration needed the black community to hear. A measured response as opposed to a radical message. Im not sure of your deference to Eric Holder. He is fairly moderate. Obama immediately distanced himself and crticized Rev. Wright when Wright's statements came out. I will give you this. Obama probably looked the other way on more then one occasion, as Wright's statements were probably weren't his first. He found a pastor whose most of the time was not controversisl. Once he became president it was no longer possible to ignore. He did his due diligence. Farrakhan is also an influential black leader. It is better to keep the snake where you can keep an eye on its behavior, then to turn your back, ignore, and get bit later on. All leaders have an obligation to listen to different factions in the nation. Doesn't mean they buy the rhetoric, or agree with it. It just means they are smart enough to keep potential problem in their sites. They also have an obligation to call out a groups behavior when it is not in the best interest of the country. Obama did that, he just did it in a measured and erudite way. I know it turned off many as he came off elitist, but he wasnt. He's a lawyer and realized that words matter. He knew he had to select his verbage exactly to avoid giving the potential for being misunderstood or misquoted. His sin was bering too careful and not letting his emotions come our until the end of his term.

t1nick replies on Jan 20, 2019:
@Trajan61. That is incorrect. At worst Obama was too timid in speaking to racist events. He tried to walk a neutral line for 3/4 of his two terms. He agonizingly avoided bring race into the dialogue when it was obvious that racism was involved. Because he was the first black president, he knew the precariousness of his role. As the first black president he knew the world and the nation were looking at him under a microscope. He was setting the legacy for future minorities who have presidential aspirations. In the last quarter of his term.realizing that his term was winding down, he came out of his shell and stood up against the institutional racism driving the country. If anything he was too timid. The dominsnt culture hates to be held accountable for their poor and borish behavior. Its painful, and they hate to have their behavior thriwn back at them.

Many of the claims of racism are true. Long standing policies or behaviors that were racist were left unchallenged because the balance of power made it dangerous to individusls to speak up. In the present environment, the balance of power has shifted due to demographics. It is now a safer environment to protest and call out racism where it exists. The dominant society hates to be called on its improper behavior, especially if they had been able to get away with it for decades with impunity. Accountability is always an uncomfortable thing. So, "everything is labeled racism today", may be true, but it just might that they always were and still remain so. Caveat, false accusations will occur just because the law of probabilities suggest they should. Don't be seduced by these occurances. They are exceptions in the greater trend. Exceptions do not make the rule, they are just that, only exceptions.

@Renickulous. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot in effect offer to let women have control over their own bodies, but yet deny them the right to abortion. That is contradictory. Can't have cake and eat it to so to speak. Second, let me carify my stance. I am not a medical doctor, but have taught Biology fir many years. I am used to arguing against those that claim humanness begins at conception. This is how I understand the argument. A fertilized oocyte doesn't specifically exhibit human like characteristics until after the blastocyte stage. Prior to this the fertilized cell is capable of becoming almost any species if new genetic material is introduced. At this stage the cell is pliable and not defined. Naturally it carries the genetic material from both parents, but can be altered or exchanged for that of another species. It after the blastocyte stage that science recognizes the foetus as human. On a moral stance. Which is worse. A life that never is attains awareneds or abstract thought, being cut short before conscience awareness occurs. Or seeing an unwanted pregnacy to proceed. The child being born into a world that cannot provide for them or does not want them. 60 years of growing up under these conditions often makes for dysfunction individuals due to social and economic circumstances they are born too. You can blame the Christians and Republicans for passing policies that control the womens body, but ignore the child after its birth. Both groups are hypocritical.

@sfvpool yes I did. Not imptressed by your past tense Its still happening. Look around you. The disparity is evident. Go to Pine Ridge on your vacation and see how its not past tense, its present and future tense. Go to South Chicago, the same. Even the whites in Appalachia fit the situation. Its not necessarily by their own making. Everyone makes poor choices. But sometimes society makes choices for people. Historical trauma (Blacks and Natives for instance) is real and debilitating. There are segments of any population that are lazy. These become the poster standard for those who want to find fault and withhold social and economic justice Taken in their totality, most in each group are hard working and industrious. They just want to make a living like anybody else. They raise their children to be productive and contributors. But, the controlling segments of docsiety insist on pushing them back down and not letting them pull themselves up like you intimated that you did. That is the white previlege.

@sfvpool. Once again you are incorrect. White privilege is not a diversion or a misdirection tactic. Your failure to recognize is irrelevant to its presence or impact on sociery. Your language and rationalizations are impodent in the face of reality. Yes I brought up race, as the implications of your staging of the problem showed an ignorance of the reality of what is happening in communities. Step out of your protective sound chamber and circle of like minded filters and go investigate an inner city neighbothood of urban poor. or an Indian reservation in South Dakota. If you havent reviewed my bio, take alook. I have worked with margonalized peoples for 30 years and have seen the impact of your white privilege from the inside. To state that you are not a racist has nothing to do if you are a racist or not. Most people do not see themselves as racist, when in fact they are. Most people, myself included have blind spots and racially inspired stereotypes and beliefs. The diffetence is how we let them dictate our actions in a greater context.

@sfvpool. You are making .many false assumptions. Many of those less fortunate are not less fortunate by their own doing. There are many people that come into this life in despiration. Not their choice, born to it. But the idea of meriticracy for certain segments of our society is a myth. The circumstances that allow individuals to raise themselves up by their boot straps does not exist. They are burdened with poverty, live in circustances that actively work to keep them from upeard mobility. One of the evolutionary adaptations that allowed humans to survive a brutal and challenging beginning was the development of a sophisticated ability to communicate abstract ideas and culture and society. The bonding together by all members was necessary for the groups survival. That relationship and responsibility has not disappeared just because our numbers have significantly increased. Society is still an integral aspect of our species. Your response has the hallmarks of white priveledge and discrimination against others of less opportunity, which unfortunately are made up principally of people of color. Their situation was created and perpetuated by colonial suppression, and furthered by white privilege controlling access to resources and power. Your outright refusal to support others in this society is just sad. Please do some research on social dynamics in this society before you make such specious assumptions and assertions.
