Smollett needs to be accountable for his actions. What he did is inexcusable. The larger problem that he created is a credibility problem for those who have legitimate cases. The conservatives will glob on to this and use this as an excuse to dismiss other real instances of homophobia and racism. As is typical with conservatices, they will take this exception and try to make it to be the rule. This is symptomatic of the excessive and exceptional occurrences that have occurred under this president and Administration.

The problem I see is that the opponents to the concept of global warming look at a number like 1 to 1.5 degree warming and say "so what?" What they fail to comprehend is the fragility of many environments and that small a tempersture rise is significant. As one ecosystem fails, so do others in a domino effect. Decomposition of massive amounts of organic material in the Arctic Circle floods the atmosphere with carbon dioxide. This too begins a cascading event with even more warming due to the atmospheric greenhouse effect. This in turn accelerates the global waming cascade.

Will the American People wake up to the reality that tRump is destroying our country with his lies ...
t1nick comments on Feb 18, 2019:
The people who support Trump, while not overly intelligent saw the American society as moving away from the morays that they grew up with (not that their morays were that pristine being based principly on white privilege left over from our colonial era). So percieving themselves left out and/or disenfranchised by the larger society (actually the larger society was just re-adjusting itself away from white privilege as the demographics changed) they saw the present government and society as no longer worth saving. Trump supporters are vested in upending the percieved overly liberal society, and returning to a more racist, white controlled time. They are not concerned with or interested in such trvial things as democracy or the Constitution. That is too nebulous of a concept. Instead they fall back on the patriarchy of the church to justfy their right to be superior to non-whites in society.

This concept is called ontogeny. Most fetus in the subPhylum Vertebrata form similarly until the later stages of the fetal devolpment. For awhile there was a saying in biology; "Ontogeny recapitulates Phylogeny". This meant the stages of fetal development followed a pattern that was reflective of thier evolutionary development from fish to mammal. This saying no longer in favor in the evolutionay Biology ranks.

In the summer of 2010, I worked for NASA in the Central Valley, CA. Our job was to investigate three problems involving atmospheric chemistry. One of the resesrch problems was focused upon measuring VOC's (volatile organic compounds) over the dairy farms in the Central Valley. The target VOC's that were of most concern included carbon dioxide, methane and ethane emmissions eminating off the dairy farms. Our reasearch included flying in a DC8 equiped with monitoring equipment geared to taking air samples over the selected sites. We flew over as low as 1000 ft above the dairies, and as high as +20,000 ft. Multiple passes were made over each dairy. Control samples were taken away from the dairies to establish a baseline. Significant inflated levels of VOC's were documented over the dairies after samples were analyzed back in the NASA labs. Methane is produced when the cattle feces is collected in large piles adjacent to the dairy yards. It is usually bulldozed into large piles to remove them from the living pens. This is also a significant source of carbon dioxide emissions. Ethane is produced as the piles of feed corn ferments. Because of the volume of feed needed to feed the dairy cows, the corn is kept in large open piles. As humidity and precipitation invade these pikes, the sugars in the corn activates the fermentation process. Our research showed that dairy, and cattle feed lots for fattening cattle prior to shipping them off for slaughter are significant sources of greenhouse gasses.

t1nick comments on Feb 17, 2019:
Know what you are talking about before you start throwing terms around; What is Democratic Socialism? Democratic socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for a few. To achieve a more just society, many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can participate in the many decisions that affect our lives. Democracy and socialism go hand in hand. All over the world, wherever the idea of democracy has taken root, the vision of socialism has taken root as well—everywhere but in the United States. Because of this, many false ideas about socialism have developed in the US. Democratic socialists do not want to create an all-powerful government bureaucracy. But we do not want big corporate bureaucracies to control our society either. Rather, we believe that social and economic decisions should be made by those whom they most affect. Today, corporate executives who answer only to themselves and a few wealthy stockholders make basic economic decisions affecting millions of people. Resources are used to make money for capitalists rather than to meet human needs. We believe that the workers and consumers who are affected by economic institutions should own and control them. Social ownership could take many forms, such as worker-owned cooperatives or publicly owned enterprises managed by workers and consumer representatives. Democratic socialists favor as much decentralization as possible. While the large concentrations of capital in industries such as energy and steel may necessitate some form of state ownership, many consumer-goods industries might be best run as cooperatives. Democratic socialists have long rejected the belief that the whole economy should be centrally planned. While we believe that democratic planning can shape major social investments like mass transit, housing, and energy, market mechanisms are needed to determine the demand for many consumer goods.
MEN ONLY: What is your race/ethnic origin?
t1nick comments on Feb 16, 2019:
Technically, there no such thing as race in humans. The biological definition of race is a geographically isolated breeding population that shares certain characteristics in higher frequencies than other populations of that species, but has not become reproductively isolated from other populations of the same species. (A population is a group of organisms that inhabit the same region and interbreed.) Read more: http://www.biologyreference.com/Ar-Bi/Biology-of-Race.html#ixzz5fknYnT9G Because humans have moved across the surface of the Earth, interbreeding wherever they travelled. This mobility and proclivity to have sex (forcibly or otherwise) precludes the opportunity for a population to be and remain geographically isolated. A necessary element in the biologic evolutionary definition. Therefore, there is no identifiable race gene in humans. Race, or what we call race is more a matter of sexual selection and natural selection. Peoples in a specific geographical location produce more melanin in high ultraviolet locations, and less in lower ultraviolet levels. Peoples in these respective areas are deemed healthier due to their melanin content, and therefore deemed a more desirable mate (a combination of both sexual selection and natural selection). So as we ask the question about what race you are, it is a nonsensical question in humans. It is a cultural delineation, not an evolutionary or biological definition.

Many think that any criticism of Isreali policy is the same as being anti-Semitic. It is not. You can criticize Isreali policy and not be opposed to the state of Isreal. AIPAC is not an innocent lobby organization. They support policies that are harmful and unethical with regards to the treatment of the Palestinian within Isreal. Criticism of Isreal is not monolithic, i.e. either/or. You are supportive of Isreal and never criticize, or you are opposed to Isreal because you criticized their policy.

Appaling then, appalling now. The 1964 Voters Rights Act did away with only the most obvious and overt vestiges of Jim Crow racism. It did almost nothing about the less obvious and covert instititional racism that pervades this country today. The South is only slightly less prejudiced today as it was prior to 1964, just better hidden. Just look to Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia,& Florida (Texas and Oklahoma are always suspect as well) in the last two elections. A racist nevers percieves themselves as racist. They have a well built set of rationalizations as to how they are actually being fair and magnanimous. The Northern fly-over states are little better in many ways. Poorly educated (struggled to get through high school), often close-minded, and overtly standoffish. They perpetuate their share of false stereotyping in order to preserve their clannish confederacies. And yes I'm engaging in stereotypng myself. I have lived and spent time in all these locations. So this post is based on anecdotal observation and I have not supplied any quantifiable evidence ( although it exists out there in abundance)..

Rewatched "west side story" it still is as appealing now as it was in the 60s.
t1nick comments on Feb 10, 2019:
First let me say, I have always enjoyed West Side Story. It was my introduction to Rita Mareno and Natalie Wood. I will always be thankful for that, lol. Now for the but; we are in a world and society today that is intent on exposing traditional icons and stereotypes. I am guilty of being part of that. In a way it reminds me of the icon revealing of the late 60' and early 70's of which I was a burgeoning teenager on the cusp of young adulthood. Just like then, we were intent on weeding out incorrect and inappropriate stereotypes and images hurtful to marginalized communities and peoples. I have been a social activist for the better part of 50 years. Having lived and worked in the hispanic and Native communities all these years, I have been constantly exposed to the pain or annoyance that these communities experience when incorrectly portrayed by the dominant society. It is no slight matter in the communities, it goes to their own cultural identity and social relevance. This is especially very true with movies made in the 50's, they are problematical. So to it is with West Sides Story's depictions of Puerto Ricans. Below are 3 articles about how the movie got it wrong and how that matters to the community depicted. Sorry to be a buzz kill and bring relevance to what was an innocent post about a movie we all grew up with. But it is important to continue to reveal things that are not only not real or inherently misleading and potentially harmful. Read at your own peril. Sorry.
