A lot of people point to the science fiction genre as a precursor to future events and technologies. Much of what is described in science fiction stories becomes a science fact at some point after wtitten. Science fiction, cinema and written has attempted to tackle the problem outlined in the article. Some very dark and bleak, some more uplifting and optimimisric. The truth most likely exists somewhere in-between of coarse. Here's the question that occurs to me. It seems that humans seek validation for there existent through work (exceptions exist of course). Is this a necessity for the species? That is to say, an innate need for an avenue for the species to direct their ability for abstract manipulation (intellectual or tactile). Or is the need to work simply cultural. A shared learned value that serves to provide basic subsistance for survival or a mechanism for filling time. So flash forward, a world where the majority of work is accomplished by robots. What happens to the human need for validating their existance? Where do they put that energy, that need (cultural or innate)? I suggest we look to the science fiction writers and cinema for potential answers. Some lucky (tongue in cheek) author or screen writer goingvbe anmble to look back and say, "Told you". Lol

The idea of seeking acknowledgement thatdog whistles are found in all segments of our society. Whether the white horse at USC is a dog whistle for white supremacy is debatable. But it is symptomatic of how symbols get used as dog whistles to send messages about who's dominant and who's in control, how challenging this status could be dangerous. Whether there was any messaging associated with Traveller and USC would take looking at it in a bigger context, taking in opionions beyond the dominant culture. You may ultimately be right, but the verdict is out.

I don't understand how people use science to disprove freewill.
t1nick comments on Feb 9, 2019:
You pose an interesting question. A lot of it comes about in how you seek to define what you call, freewill." I am a scientist and a once avid interactive game player ( D&D back when it was truly interactive and real). Games like D&D are based in game theory. Game theory usually posits that there is a limited number of choices (known and unknown) at anytime. If this is true, then there is no such thing as freewill. Just likelihoods and probabilities. That anytime a person is faced with a choice, they are in fact choosing from a set of probable answers (again, known and unknown). They are intuitively selecting from a set of probabilities. Therefore you say, they have the freewill to choose one of the proable outcomes (choices). I posit that they do not have a choice, the choice has them. The obviousness of the choice makes it difficult to select other than the choice with the greatest probability. Exceptions do occur.
Anyone got a problem with this statement / definition? It seems spot on to me...
t1nick comments on Feb 9, 2019:
There exists more than one paradigm from which capitalism can be run. One fits an evolutionary biological model. In this one, businesses and corporations seek to optimize their profits to support both themselves and their employees. This is a far reaching and a far visionary model. It seeks to protect itself and the larger system "ad infinitum:. I. E. Do what is the best for all to perpetuate the system, the profits and the viability of the system forever. Yes, evolutionary theory talks about the "survival of the fittest". But don't try to use that to argue for capitalism. To do this just means that you have absolutely no understanding as to how the evolutionary system works. Evolution is about greatest fitness for the system for which it is adapted. Our present paradigm for capitalism in this country is what may be called "predatory" capitalism or"parastic" capitalism. It seeks to consume its host from the inside out. It is about getting in, doing the most target damage, and taking short term profits. It is very short term directed and actually works to destroy the system it is operating within. It is dysfunctional based upon self-consuming. Swallow the market so a market no longer exists and it becomes inviable and disappears. So if people begin to defend our present version of capitalism, they are essentially saying that we should invite a parasitic organism into our system so we can be destroyed from the inside out. They are not friends of the USA.

Jonds, I haven't had an opportunity to take in your link. so my comments are based upon our previous conversation where I listed in-depth examples of white male privilege. This new movement is about making men accountable for their actions in a manner that men are used not too. It is s not discrimination agsinst them. Its accountability, nothing more. If male children are experiencing difficulties with the new expectations. blame it on thier parents for not explaining to them how previous behavior was hurtful and inappropriate. The irriitability and anxiety comes from mixed messaging and a failure of parents to give up thier behaviors and actions.

t1nick comments on Feb 4, 2019:
I agree. I can just envision some well intentioned John Wanye type decide he's going to solve the problem single-handed. He exits the classroom with his side arm, turns the corner, sees a body down the hall. It turns out to be retreating student, a first responder, or another teacher. In his panic they shoot the this person. Or they turn the corner, is spotted by a first responder, ordered to put down his weapon, but in his panic is too slow and he becomes the victim. Or while storing his sidearm in his breifcase, and in a hurry to get ready for class, he forgets to lock the sidearm away properly. Chances are he's mentioned in class, so students know he has one. He comes back later when he suddenly remembers he need to secure and its gone. Lifted by a student. Now I admit that these are hypotheticals and probably exceptions. But they are scenarios not beyond the realm of believability, no matter how unlikely. If even a small chance for this to happen exists, it too much. There are way too many gung ho idiots (even in the teaching ranks) to make the chances acceptable. As A high school teacher I disapprove of side arms in the classroom.
