Today I picked up an old book.
t1nick comments on Jan 22, 2019:
This was the 100 years after Wordsworth penned the "noble savage" it was 20-30 years after the "war in the west" in which Sherman and Jackson demanded the eradication of the native cultures in the west. It was two decades after Sand Creek Massacre, wounded Knee Massacre, Little Big Horn ( chock thos up for the indians), and many more. Eventually, the indians were overehelmed and put on reservations, a few in their homeland, but most in lands foreign to them. They were oversaw by the military via a branch known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs [BIA]. The philosophy of the BIA concerning their charges is that they were all children, regardless of age. As children, they couldn't possibly know what was good for themselves. It was the job of the military to teach them what was good and necessary, in the Christian tradition. Just prior to 1906 saw the rise of the Indian Boarding Schools along the Carlisle model. Native children were forcibly taken from their home and families. Placed in boarding schools where they were forced to cut their hair. They were punished if they spoke their language or prayed to their gods. The goal was overtly to make them, 1st Christian, then good submissive red white men. They were forced to learn vocational skills, both male and female. Many children ran away and perished trying to get home. Most were caught, brought back and severely punished. To this day, the majority of Native Americans adults are suspicious of westetn education I have taught on two reservations and in three Native schools, including one of the historic boarding schools (not the same paradigm today, we revere their culture nowadays and teach it alongside western education) over the last thirty years. Hiawatha is not very well thought of as it perpetuates false stereotypes. But, I share your appeciation for old books and am sort of an Antiquarian myself.

t1nick comments on Jan 21, 2019:
You missed it completely. The native elder was trying to de-escalate by using traditional drumming, by his own admission in subsequent interviews. The drum in his culture is a symbol of coming together, besides he is an elder. The children have varying degrees of guilt regarding disrespect. Many were just caught up in the moment and in need of using up their adrenaline from the previous encounter. The young man in the elders face is different. He was intentionally "mad dogging: and trying to intimate the elder. That was, and is disrespectful. A child doesnt do that to his elders. His actions were a clear cut example of white male privilege. He felt, as a child mind you, that he could get in that elders face and directly and overtly disrespect him. He felt this way because he is white and is used to seeing the adults around him getting away with similar behaviors. Minorities have lived with type of direct challenge for generations. They cannot fight back because they are a minority and do not have the power. This young man understood this and knew he could do it with impunity, exactly because he was white. If you cannot see this, then perhaps you are also part of the problem.
This one leaves a little less to the imagination, but ohhh...

t1nick comments on Jan 21, 2019:
I reacted viscerally to the video, as I live and teach in Native America and I am very sensitive to the trials and tribulations of this community. I reacted without all the facts. In view of new facts that have come to light, I apologize for my presumptuous. There is enough blame to go around, and two wrongs do not make a right. Context is important and I failed to get the entire context.

t1nick comments on Jan 20, 2019:
Kind of. Lamarckism would say the system desired mechanisms to dissapate heat and therefore willed them into existence. Darwinian evolution would prefer to say that the system experimented with varying mechanisms for their dissapting excess heat until organic life was happened upon. Best solution to an aggravating solution by directed trial and error. Directed in the sense that physical limitations of the exant world predicated what options were available.
Any suggestions for my life on Earth Timeline Necklaces?
t1nick comments on Jan 20, 2019:
How sophisticated do want to get? - Chaotion time when Earth was a molten planet - Proterazoan time when life bega - Paleozoic time when life exploded into the oceans and diversified - Mesozoic time life on land first diversified and dominated outside the oceans. - evolution of the reptiles and amphibians, first bird & mammal species evolve - end of the dinosaurs (period of species gigantism) Cenozoic age of mammals and birds includes an ice age and the advent of humans. This is the simple version. I design projects like this all the time, and to scale. If you are serious about wanting help and advice, PM me. I can also give you the Navajo correlation to this as they have come to see it. Goid luck.

Is it OK to be racist against white people?
t1nick comments on Jan 20, 2019:
Many of the claims of racism are true. Long standing policies or behaviors that were racist were left unchallenged because the balance of power made it dangerous to individusls to speak up. In the present environment, the balance of power has shifted due to demographics. It is now a safer environment to protest and call out racism where it exists. The dominant society hates to be called on its improper behavior, especially if they had been able to get away with it for decades with impunity. Accountability is always an uncomfortable thing. So, "everything is labeled racism today", may be true, but it just might that they always were and still remain do. Caveat, false accusations will occur just because the law of probabilities suggest they should. Don't be seduced by these occurances. They are exceptions in the greater trend. Exceptions do not make the rule, they are just that, only exceptions.
I didn’t realize border security was racist.
t1nick comments on Jan 20, 2019:
It can be, and is with Trump, depending upon your motivation for promoting it. Security is common sense, but exclusivity just because you don't like the color of their skin is racism.
Does society owe lazy or stupid a living?
t1nick comments on Jan 19, 2019:
Your question is repleat with false innuendos. Who is to say that a person in desperate circumstances arrived there by their doing. Many people are born or thrust into social and economic circumstances that there is no way around or out. The use of the word stupid and lazy are stereotypes, and like most streotypes are more often not correct. The terms are often used by whtes to rationalize why they do not have to feel any social responsibility. Just another form of white privilege.

NASA has also bern doing atmospheric chemistry research in the airways above dairy farms in Crntral Valley California (spent a summer working this project). After a decade of collecting air samples over the dairies, they confirm that dairy fsrms (stockyards too) emit significant smounts of methane, CO2, and other Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) into the atmodphere. The carbon footprints for dairy farms and stockyards are huge. Couple that with the water contamination discussed here, and the footprint makes one wonder about their true importance to the world's dietary needs. Can the planet really afford them. Even though I love milk. steak and burgers, is it worth it.

Crime committed by nonimmigrants
t1nick comments on Jan 13, 2019:
When the number of violents crimes committed by illegal immigrants against US citizens is compared against the number of violent crimes committed against US citizens within the borders of the country you are looking at about 1/100th of one percent (0.01). Statistically that is considered statitically insignificant. Hate crimes against people of color by whites and white supremicists are about at least 100 times more prevalent than illegal alien crimes. The republican claims are specious and not proven put by data and statistics.

Nothing is wrong in your thinking. Because of the opiod scare, doctors are highly nervous when patients request opiods, even if they justified. Doctots sre under their own microscope these days. However, doctors are a conservative lot in general. It is hard for them to change or adapt. Because opiods worked so well for pain management for their patients, its a paradigm they are stick on. The overarching paradigm in modern medicine is one ot trearing symptoms. Medicate the symptom and hide it, but forbid that you seek out the real cause of the disease and address that. In this way they are assured a constant clientele flow, as the same disease reappears in a different manifestation elsewhere in the body. They are very poor at considering or prescribing alternative pain control practices. So they are caught on this roller coaster of their own making.
