Secular humanism?
t1nick comments on Jan 8, 2019:
Contrary to what the fundamentalists would have us believe, then, what our society really needs is not more religion but a richer notion of the nature of morality. Humanism is compatible with atheism and agnosticism, but being atheist or agnostic does not automatically make one a humanist. Secular humanism - Wikipedia

t1nick comments on Jan 8, 2019:
Robert most things need to be looked at in the historical context of the time it occurred. At the time that Clinton made his plea, the typical illegal immigrant coming across the border was the adult male member of their families. They were primarily coming from Mexico with the intent of finding work in America, to send money home to their families back in Mexico. We were also coming off of a long period of intense immigration numbers flooding over the border 1.5 times freater than that today. Presently, the typical immigrants today are comeing from Central America. They are fleeing tyranny and violence, not looking for jobs to send money back home (of course some will, but exceptions not the rule). Illegal immigration to date is lower by 1.5 million per year from 2004. The numbers are drastically decreasing. Its anything but a crisis. Second, in 2008, just 48 hours after President Obama was inaugurated, exiting Speaker of the House. Mitch McConnell stated unieqivocally that he and the Republicans in Congress would do everything they could do assure that Obama was a one term president. The Republicans began (then Tea Party, now Freedom Caucus) an eight year campaign of blocking and denying Obama any legislation whatsoever. They lead the pattern that was to become known as obstructionism. Obama had absolutely no choice but to use his ability to shut down the govt. to get anything past. He had a Democratic Congress for his first two years, but the difficulty attached to formulating and passing medical reform was too much for the two years. He had no choice but to use what powers available to him, govt. shutdown, to address the issue. The same is not true of Trump. He too had a Republican controlled Congress and Executive the first two years. The Republicans and Democrats offered his a bi-partison bill with 25 billion for the wall and a solution for the DACA population. After he said give me a bi-partisin bill and I'll sign it. He was, but then 24 yrs later he renege on his promise. This is a debacle of his own creation and bear nothing in resemblance to either Clintos situation or Obama's. Context is everything. Generalizations are falsehoods. One final point. When the number of violent crimes committed against US citizens by illegal immigrants is compared to all violent crime in the US in a given year, is so statistically small as to be numerically insignificant. They constitute about 1/100th of one percent (0.01) when compared against all violent ctimes in America. More violence is perpetuated by white supremicists and white hate mongers than immigrant crime. His argument is fallacious.

t1nick comments on Jan 7, 2019:
I think you may be overthinking it a little. I imagine there exists many motivations for becoming an atheist. For me, I was 19 and in college and an Intro to Philosophy class got me thinking. I realized there was a bigger world and the old explanations just were not working. Need to change my paradigm. Voila! That was 45 years ago. For others it may be the result of a bad experience that made them question their previous beliefs. Lots of reasons.

It does occur to me there is a relationship with sleep and light. Humans are a diurnal species, meaning that they work on a dual cycle of light and dark. This doesnt mean that it has to be totally dark. But it is also the reason for the high suicide rate in people who have emmigrated to the polar regions (e.g. Alaska) with 6 months light and 6 months of light.

It has to do with electro-magnetic fields. Every cell in your body has an electrical charge, and therefore susceptible to influence from external electrical fields. On more than one occasion, when a student in my classes asks the question, "When will I ever use this information?", I give them the above explanation above. If they still insist on pushing the point I then respond to the questioner that its true, that particular "askee" will probably never use the information, but we have a responsibility to present this information for others who may need it in future and therefore need to provide it to our student populace.

If you had the power to do so would you eliminate zoos?
t1nick comments on Jan 1, 2019:
https://leidenlawblog.nl/articles/the-justifiability-of-zoos Here is a Law blog that directly addresses this question. Interesting how many animals are killed each year because of stupid, avoidable behavior by visitors to the zoo. Tradional zoos are no better than prisons. "Living Space - Natural Habitat " zoos are a little better. but not perfect. Two positive aspects of a zoos remains; 1) opportunity to preserve an endangered species prior to extinction; 2) research benefiting the organism that otherwise would not be possible. Outside of that, the only purpose they serve is to allow one species (humans) the opportunity to see animals not familiar to them in an artifcial environment. Humans are vain in their desire to own everything they see and control everything they touch.

There’s no philosophy of life without a theory of human nature | Aeon Essays
t1nick comments on Dec 31, 2018:
Thats way I teach it alright. Many animals make and use tools. Cooking is just one tool. Each organism (species) has those attributes that makes it fit and competitive in the world. Eagles have amazing eyesight, strong talons and beak, and strong wings to acquire its prey. Cheetahs have speed, claws, and enlarged incisors to grapple and hold its prey. All organisms have their adaptive attributes and characteristics that allows them remain their evolutionary fitness. Humans are no different. Back when humans were still becoming, they as a spevie species were smaller thn their prey (mammoth, mastodon, etc) and much slower and weaker than the things that preyed upon him (cave bear, smilodon, etc.). Therefore they couldnt outrun, theycouldnt out wrestle, they couldnt out fight. What they adapted was a complex society and language ability. This allowed insipient humans to express abstract ideas and work in complex societal arrangements. As these skills developed, they were accompanied by the ability to use that abstract thought process to modify things in their environment (tools). As those that were better at communications and abstraction lived long enough to propagate, their improved abilities were passed onto prodigy. Each generation became better adapted and more evolutionary fit. It took hundreds of thousands of years for these changes to manifest in the species we know today as Homo sapien sapien. It did not hurt that our pre-human ancestors had opposable thumbs and passed them on. It gave us the ability to better control objects for manipulation and alteration. The more we used our communications skills, abstract thought skills, and manipulation skills, the more those crnters of thecbrain grew. Not because using them makes them grow, but because those with were better adapted and successfully passed their traits on to their progeny. This is the short answer but you get the idea.
Meaningful change exists in the absence of traditional ideas and beliefs.
t1nick comments on Dec 31, 2018:
Meaningful change occurs when the existing paradigm no longer adequately addresses the prevailing questions. New explanations compete for most relevant . When the best arises out of the competing group, it replaces the old paradigm. This is called a paradigm shift.
