Can a woman get elected president in 2020?
t1nick comments on Dec 31, 2018:
We should hope so. Men for millennia have been in control and have done a shitty job. Many female leaders that have emerged, have in general done a better job than their male counterparts. Exceptions exist (Aung San Suu Kyi or Marsha Blackburn (lol)). Teresa May could be accused of incompetsnce, but one must remember the Brexit situation is unique and nobody has a clear idea how to proceed.

SO why is the USA in Afghanistan?
t1nick comments on Dec 31, 2018:
Afghanistan is also the gateway to south central China and the resources found within. This area is historically important as the entrance to India (see the nonfiction book, "The Geat Game"). The British tried to control Afghanistan during the colonial era, but experienced failure in its attempt to hold. The Crimean War was fought over the control of the access to the Kyber Pass through the Himalayas, and into Kabul and down into India. Afghanistan was also the focal point that helped bring down the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union over extended itself militarily and economically in an attempt to take and control the area. China has also has its incursions without success. To this day, Afghanistan remains the gateway to the interior of Asia and the natural resources to locked away there.

t1nick comments on Dec 30, 2018:
I'm sure you have heard of carrying capacity? In the early 1970's, there was a ZPG ( zero population growth) movement. It was based on the idea that planetary resouces were limited and the Earth was approaching its absolute carrying capacity. In our society it was an unnecessary movement for the mainstream. Because of increased affluency in society, mlarried couples were reducing the number of children they chose to have. Part of this was a desire to enjoy the affluency they had attained. It was a selfish self-regulation. Meanwhile some populations still continued to have ample children (e.g. Mormon, Catholics, etc). Outside the US, most populations still believed in large families (except the truly affluentin any population). We now have 7 billion humans on the planet. We have disrupted every single biome and habitat on the planet. Increased proximity and poor sanitation will eventually provide the environment that hosts a deadly virus that is beyond our ability to react to it in time. Due to access to any part of the globe in a relatively short time frame. It will migrate worldwide in a short period of time and be unstoppable. Then and only then will true population reduction occur.

Question: How do you go about finding new friends to hang out with?
t1nick comments on Dec 30, 2018:
First stop trying. I dont mean this hurtfully. In my experience, the harder you look, the fewer the connections you are actually able establish (not true in every circumstsnces). Trying too hard makes one look desparate and is an immediate red flag. So what do you do? My advice is to join as many groups that you find you have a real experience or interest in. Also, join and participate in a chat room. Be positive, supportive( real, not fained) and have a sense of humor. People love to laugh and people who are able to make them laugh. Be witty, but not obtuse. Gage the crowd and don't go overboard. If you are not sure of the crowd, hang back (known as lurking, I'm not fond of lurkers in general, but it is a good way to get a feeling for the group, and most people ignore the fact that there are lurkers in the background). Limit your PM's, unless invited directly to PM. Good luck.

t1nick comments on Dec 29, 2018:
First you need to define what you mean by "life". If you mean amino acid combinations that given the right conditions might recombine and eventually become a simple form of insipient life. If you mean a full formed organic, carbon-based organism. No. Present thinking holds two ideas regarding life in the universe and the origin of life on earth. First, there are insipient amino acid complexes floating around the universe ( i believe in comets primarily). But that is not the source for our life forms. Life on this planet more than likely began at the bottom of the ocean around volcanic vents or fumaroles. Thr environment around these vents are warm and hospitible for simple life forms. Similarily, the volcanic activity spews out a plethora of minerals. Many are necesssry for organic life. It was an optimal environments for the formation of amino acid complexes, that over millions of years, combined and recombined until a viable complex amino was realized. These over many more millions of years evolved into a complex cell, and then into complex organisms. Definitely not pansperma.
Well, this is a depressing theory:
t1nick comments on Dec 29, 2018:
Doesn't square with empiical data. The Earth as you are referring to here is inorganic. We are organic. The Earth is constantly generating heat through radioactive decay in the interior. But that is relatively constant and it isn't impacted or affected by atmospheric events. Also your inference ignores the extremely close relationships between global temperature increases and the increased output on fossil fuel output related to the rise of the Industrial Revolution and indusrialism.

Do you believe in/pay attention to "love languages?
t1nick comments on Dec 29, 2018:
When I first got married years ago, my ex and I ran into problems trying to get leach other to understand each others point of view or intent. In despiration I picked up the popular book "Men are ftom Mars and Women are from Venus". My ex thought is hokie and I tried soe of the advice. I finally came to realize that it was really about styles and ways of communicating with your significant other in a less confrontational manner. It didn't keep my ex and I from ultimately divorcing. But it did make it so that we could remain best friends, and still are. The skills I retained also are helping me in my present relationship. The premises of the book may have hokie. but the lessons taken away have been valuable. Now to your point. The premise behind love languages may appear, and actuslly be hokie. but buried in it are some clues about paying attention to your own and your partners needs, bodily expressions, and communications. So my advice is approach if it dounds like domething you could use, or ignore if it seems extraneous to your needs or comfort zone. I dont know if this adequately addresses the question?

One to the SE towards India and eastern China. A second to the NE and central and Northern China, and a third over the Urals into Europe. I think that is the most recent thinking. I may be off a little, I haven't taught this subject in a couple of years. At one time there were three separate species of hominids existing on the Eurasian continent. They were not directly related. Two species went extinct and Homo sapien sapien persevered.

t1nick comments on Dec 28, 2018:
I dont undetstand why people block, unless its a clear cut case of harrassment. I have found that if I dont respond, they go away after a couple of unanswered posts. Its dangerous to tune out people that have differing opinion. Relying on an insular bubble of only those that are like minded, leaves us unprepared when something comes from the other side. I never expect to change minds, just make my case logically and with civility. I do not always succeed, but if it gets out of hand, I just quit responding. Thats just my opinion.

You can violate Title IX by asking another student out on a date?
t1nick comments on Dec 28, 2018:
Each case should be taken on its own merit. Title IX was meant as a protection, as some people do not know how accept no as an answer (paricularly among males, but not limited to). They continue to pursue, threaten, retaliate, annoy long beyond what is acceptable. In the case of the women in the article, two possible explantions exist. 1) The law was applied incorrectly and interpreted incorrectly, or; 2) The larger male was intentionally, or unintentionally using his size in a percieved threatening manner (proximity was a threat. his vocalizations were percieved to be threatening. his posture was percieved to be threatening, etc.). Women have been victims of male harrassment forever. That is partially why Title IX is there. Large men do not realize the level of threat and intimidation they pose. Not always their fault.

Is there any imposed legalism about what activities we should attend?
t1nick comments on Dec 26, 2018:
This blocking trend is symptomatic of a bigger social trend. I see two sides of this issue; 1) Being kind; its an opportunity for people who previously felt vulnerable or unable to control the noise that comes at them fronm the outside to gain some control; 2) its also indicative of another trend developing in society. I.e. People are becoming intolerant of others with opposing points of view. Instead of engaging or discussing, they block them and retreat to their own filters. Let me add a caveat; I can understand why womrn in particular block other males. Some males can be consumed with their own opinion and their need to be right, that they either cant discuss without confrontation, or that just don't get it that they have become abusive or obnoxious and have exceeded acceprable guidelines for civil social discussion. Thats not to say there aren't women out there who do the same. but by and large males (testosterone) predominate in this behavior.

Noah’s Flood, the Loony Tunes Version.
t1nick comments on Dec 23, 2018:
Actually from my understanding as a geologist and anthropologist, you are somewhat incoreect. There is ample evidence for a worldwide flood. Granted it didn't occur anything like the story in the Bible. Let me begin with the anthropolgical evidence for a worldwide flood incident. Worldwide there are multiple cultures that maintain a story in there mythologies and beliefs that make reference to a ", great flood" event. They are surprisingly similar in their description. Too many for accidental coincidence to explain. Geologically, again there is evidence worldwide for a extendive flooding episode. Sediments lain down in an inundation depositional environment exist all around the world. In fact, using radiometric dating methods, it appears that they all date roughly to the same age. Here is the logic. At the time of this prurported event, most civilizations were living adjacent continental coastlines, and along the base of major rivers. These environments were a good source of readily exploitable resources and able to support larger populations. Coincidently, these areas tend to be low lying in elevation, being on or near sea level. Around the time of the purported event, a major eustatic sea level changed. And it appears that this hapoened rather quickly. Thus said, the major consequence was that the major low lying civilizations were flooded out and there cities were inundated and destroyed. Large bodies of people were forced to flee inland worldwide. Again, this resulted in a worldwide mythology of a great flood. Therefore, the mythologirs are subsequently based on a real event. As I ssid before. It did not happen as described in the Bible, and the continents were not totally inundated as suggested, just the continental coastlines, but the home of most civilizations of the time. Many mythologies are based on a peoples attempt to explain natural events that were beyond their worldview to make sense of at the time.
