t1nick comments on Oct 13, 2018:
Religion is not an organic entity, it is an artificial construct, like money or alphabets.. it doesnt exist in nature. We can talk about the evolution of the development of religions (individually), but to treat religion as an organic entity and attempts to apply the principles of evolutionary theory seems an exercise in futility. I'm sure parallels could be drawn, but would be of any value.
Validity of a theory
t1nick comments on Oct 13, 2018:
First, I think you may be mixing up an hypothesis with a theory. Hypotheses only become theories in hard science after they have been tested a large number of times with consistent results. At the point that they become actual theories excepted by the scientific community, they are considered the very best explanation that exists for the data and the phenomenon. They are as close to a scientific fact as we can get until improved technology comes along to provide better data and measurement collection, adding additional insight. Now to your original question. When we do an experiment, we never say that we proved the hypothesis. Instead we say that we our data adds validity to the the hypothesis and and an understanding of the phenomenon as tested. However, we can say that the hypothesis was incorrect as the results do not support the data.

I have taught high school and college science for over Awww 30 years. This includes teaching in cultural environments where scientific understanding clashes directly with cultural beliefs. I give my caveat at the beginning of each year. Here goes: a) I was hired to teach mainstream scientific thought and understsnding; b) I do not have a monopoly on all the answers; c) i cannot tell what to believe, nor have the energy to try; d) You have three choices: i) you can choose not to believe anything I teach you, ii) you can cherry pick those things you chose to believe and disregard the rest, or iii) you can believe everything that I am teaching; e) Regardless, when I test you, I expect you to demonstrate the explanation that mainstream science says is at work. Regardless of your personal beliefs and perspectived. Its worked for me for 30 years. Good luck.

The First Amendment has responsibilities that comes along with it. That's why it is illegal to yell "fire" in a crowded theater. There is a social responsibility to not purposely distort or lie with obvious intent to incite the public. A version of yelling fire in the public forum. As we seen with this Administration, rhetoric can incite unstable, rash individuals to act out in violent ways.

t1nick comments on Oct 7, 2018:

Cutie - one further point. When you see the Slogan, "Make America Great Again", usually the supporters are referring to society in the 1950's. Coming off World War II, America had tremendous growth and economic prosperity. What most people fail to remember (or realize) is that most Americans paid in excess of 60% of their income as income tax to pay for that prosperity. Also it was the pinnacle of white privilege where whites could get away with anything over minorities and did (see Jim Crow era).

Cutiebeauty @BigPawsBullets is not quite being accurate, fair, or balanced. He equates Bernie Sander's and the Democrats position as trying turn America into a socialist country. Actually Bernie and others are talking about a system called Democratic Socialism. It is not the same as Socialism (see Venezuela). While Socialism has not worked historically, Democratic Socialism is alive and functions quite well in countries like Sweden and Norway. In fact it works better than our system presently. Paws would like to the US move to a type of capitalism known as laizzez faire in there are no regulations or checks and balances. The problem with this type of system is that it depends upon the participants (at our economic level corporations) to act in the best interest of everyone. In doing so they, as well as the consumer ultimately benefits. Unfortunately what the capitalistic system has degenerated into and its right wing (Republicans) proponents is s form of predatory capitalism. In this system the general rule is to destroy your competitors at any cost, strive for the maximun short-term profit, regardless of the long term negative impacts. This includes fleecing, cheating, and stealing from their own consumers. Trump snd the Freedon Caucus are the best examples possible for this cancerous system.

How conservative Christians are responding to the Kavanaugh allegations.
t1nick comments on Sep 30, 2018:
Conservatives cannot claim any monopoly on morality and ethics (gross understatement in the least). They want to save lives by banning abortion, but refuse to care of the child once its born. They continually cut programs to support birth control which has been proven to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies (conservatives hate facts and verifiable statistics, prefer ungounded anecdotes). They continue to cut programs that would support the unwanted children they want to bring into the world. Christian conservatives would rather ignore the actions and behaviors of a predator like Kavanaugh in order to achieve the above goals. You say the accusations are uncorroborated. Kavanaugh is a prime example of white privilege. He is the poster child for a culture of white lack of empathy towards anybody who doesn't fit into his privileged society. No wonder Christian conservatives are fighting so hard for his nomination.

Character does matter. If one is be hired for a position that has the responsibility for making decisions about issues relevant to the issue they were guilty of transgressing, then by all means their past behavior needs to be considered. Even childhood indiscretions point to a person's ability to make good and proper choices. These actions reflect upon the underlying paradigm they have regarding this partucular issue. Actions do not happen in a vacuum. Sure an adult can learn to repress the behaviors because they know that being caught has severe repercussions. Punishments outweigh the risk. But, this is not an assurance that they see the action as morally wrong or unethical, just too risky. It can impact their response when faced with making policy or important decisions. Speaking generally and non-specific.

Do Americans feel guilty about their history?
t1nick comments on Sep 29, 2018:
America is made up of people. People range in personality from the very good to the most heinous. There is probably not a geographic location on the Earth that the people living there havent engaged in something that would be considered grevious to most of us. Many of those were perpetrated by the people in power. The US is not exception. Most know what the media tells us, but that is generally only half the story. The US has many sins in its history, just ask Native Americans. If you want some insight into what the non-whitewashed history of the US really is, read Howard Zinn. To believe we are innocent is to either be terribly naive or have your head buried in the sand. Ssying this does not dimenish the incredible experiment that America is.

Today's political environment is very toxic. There is very little grey area between liberals vs. conservative opinions. People are extremely polarized. I do not respect or agree with conservative ideology. But, as the famous saying by Patrick Henry(?), "I may not agree with your opinion, but I will fight for your right to say it!". If you post something, expect to hear the opposition respond because of the polarization of people. Feelings are raw and near the surface in this environment. My advise with due respect: if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
