I tend to think that the breadth of more experience and life phases allows us to understand a greater scope of what others have lived and are feeling. The difference in close relationship may require a bit of effort and very clear communication, just to sort through established habits.

There is never a guarantee of a 'purebred' dog being superior to a rescue or mixed breed. To the contrary, most foster/rehomed/mixed dogs have better emotional balance, intelligence, and overall health. Lots of good advice from others here, and most important is always to participate in your dog's TRAINING, providing lots of love, exercise and interactive time with them. As others have said, a dog under 2 yrs will require LOTS extra of all the above.

The new reality of dating over 65: Men want to live together; women don’t - The Globe and Mail
tinkercreek comments on Nov 30, 2019:
I decided some time ago to stop offering home-cooked meals to a new suitor. No easy choice, since I love to cook and bake. What I found was that this immediately activates some lizard-brain recognition of caregiving and gustatory needs being provided, and created an ongoing imbalance. Sharing a home and everyday life is something I always sincerely enjoyed. After being on my own for a few years now I can only look forward to seeing how that may play out in the future.
So on thanksgiving, I was at Frankie's parents home.
tinkercreek comments on Nov 29, 2019:
I am so sorry you had to face that situation. If you and Frankie were newly dating it would be different, but living together and raising your child? His parents should have made it part of the invite to tell you of their requirement on sleeping arrangements, giving you the respect to make a decision. Their house, their beliefs, but you are adults and it is 2019. Not every catholic would think as they do. There was really no good decision to make at that point, and I don't fault you at all for leaving. With the likely emotional fallout I don't know if anyone could rely on "keeping the peace" by staying. I think they were deceptive, horribly rude and close-minded for behaving as they did, a fully passive-aggressive move. Poor Frankie, having to choose, and they disrespected you both by not communicating their plans. Maybe it would help for you and Frankie (and perhaps a relationship counselor) to discuss how to proceed in the future with his parents? You took good care of yourself by holding good boundaries when they hit you with that.

"Distance doesn't matter in a relationship."
tinkercreek comments on Nov 27, 2019:
So glad you had the strength and wits to get yourself out of that! I think you have your priorities straight, and are right to stick with them. You know what suits you and what doesn't, as most of us do at this point. As others have said, it is a rare LDR that survives, and particularly challenging in the early phases of getting to know one another. Unfortunately, meeting up infrequently allows for some "false front" behaviors and leaves you to only believe what you are told of someone's life and person, as opposed to being able to observe traits first-hand. As others have also said, there are some who create a covert lifestyle of multiple relationships in different locations, as they would never be revealed due to location. That sucks, believe me, when the conversations express only monogamy. I've also experienced the void of physical and emotional connection from being apart, and don't care to repeat that. There are so many different ways to live and to form relationships, and feeling confident that your partner is holding a congruent attitude and reality to yours seems to be key.

tinkercreek comments on Nov 25, 2019:
As I see age 64 approaching, I still work full-time in an arena where I know I have aged out of the norm, and am getting tired. Just met with financial advisor last week to re-group, clarify, and look forward with more clarity. I live on that fine line, single and self-supporting with a mortgage, and after financial losses through divorce and life situations. It has become frightening to realize that I lived my earlier years with a subconscious dependence on the retirement security that my parents enjoyed, and my future is now uncertain.

Alone on Thanksgiving Day. How do you cope?
tinkercreek comments on Nov 25, 2019:
OK, first, that cake looks amazing and I have already found several recipes! From my early adult years of working in hospital, where holidays are just a number on the schedule, I developed an appreciation for making conscious choices around holidays. My family was confounded over this and spewed much drama, which helped to clarify what was really going on in setting values for myself. My BEST Thanksgiving memories are of gatherings with friends, strangers and neighbors, having fun with great food, drink, music and companionship! Through child-rearing years with my kids I reverted back to family gatherings, then things became rather fluid after divorce. I have learned the value of not always disclosing the truth of my holiday plans, or the lack of plans, to family who super-impose their values and fears upon me. Their drama is unwelcome. I have learned that avoiding the family host's conservative christian and gun-cultured rantings is more healthful for me than seeing some relatives I do value. I have learned that enjoying a quiet and peaceful day, perhaps with the fun of cooking or baking for myself, can be a marvelous gift. Round and round in the circle game, there will always be new options and variations, and I truly enjoy being at peace with my own choices.

This morning, we had an agency-wide managers’ meeting, offsite.
tinkercreek comments on Nov 24, 2019:
I work for a large, multi-state medical corporation. When I began with them the nuns were in charge and visible, prayers morning and eve were heard on the hospital PA system. While just beginning my awareness outside of church upbringing, I appreciated working in a kind and caring environment with strong mission and core values. Having returned 15 yrs ago, my personal beliefs are much different, but the organization is transparent in its values and I still respect and appreciate the great work environment. The tradition with meetings is to begin with a "reflection", at the discretion of the leader. Some do invoke prayers, and I wait politely to move on. My team knows they will never hear that from me, rather quotes and passages from philosophers, poets and authors. I think you are right to just listen calmly and respectfully to those prayers, given your bible-belt location, avoiding any religious discussion. May even be handy to keep one or two ambiguous 'reflections' on hand, in case you are asked to contribute. The workplace, one you appreciate, is no platform to challenge or create conflict on personal beliefs, and you are actually protected by law. Listening to a well-intentioned message from someone who thinks differently than you is part of the adult environment. Chill.
Overweight man rejects overweight women. What's up with that?
tinkercreek comments on Nov 23, 2019:
Geesh, I've experienced surprises, dismissal and rudeness from many first dates, but you got hit with it all from this one! Too bad, so sad. Different from the multitude of negatives in your situation, I have one long-lasting regret for not wanting to get involved with a man years ago, based on his weight. I think I'd just worked hard to get very fit and slim, was in my early 40's, and really valued the thought of a partner to share that lifestyle. As it turns out, this dear man had every other attribute I could have wanted: humor, caring, intellect, interests, generosity, family values, personal integrity/honor, career success, and he adored me. As he was a bit of a local celeb, I watched from afar as he met & married a lovely woman, though it only lasted a few years. Sometimes I ponder the possibilities.
Sorry I couldn't resist 🤣

You need to do what makes your new life better, and truly yours. There are wonderful realizations in taking control and designing your new self! I realized a need to move past all the visual reminders I could, and gradually replaced my wardrobe, most furnishings, kitchenware, etc. I rearranged furniture, changed landscaping, took up former activities and hobbies and established new social circles. It all works together to help remember your own value and the positive aspects of life.
