A lot of people like to judge as if they think God himself has appointed them to do so. We have to have thick skins and sharp intellects, often paired with sharp tongues as well. Be yourself. Most people will respect you for that......I hope.

MATH IS ABSOLUTE But is it really?
tioteo comments on Apr 5, 2018:
I had math anxiety but had to overcome it because I had to teach it. I learned to break it down into its simpler parts; then it made sense. One of the truths that I reached over the years was that the best math teachers were not the people to whom math concepts came easily, but those who had struggled and learned to do as I had done. They understood what students were experiencing.

What's the real issue that causes homelessness in America?
tioteo comments on Apr 5, 2018:
I have known some homeless who actually chose to be. I think it must be a minority, but some actually chose that lifestyle. For some of those, a mental illness component may have come into play, but not all.

Which is worse?
tioteo comments on Apr 4, 2018:
It is subjective and depends a lot on your distinct personality. I could be a hermit for long stretches and loneliness would not be an issue. But, at other times I seem to crave the companionship of people. As far as fear, I fear more bad things happening to those important to me than to myself.

Active Mormon To Agnostic
tioteo comments on Apr 2, 2018:
When I lived in Wyoming near the Utah border, I had numerous Mormon leaders trying to convert me one way or another: literature, pointing out favorable movies, display at a museum of the handcart fiasco, etc. They thought I was a gentile from the midwest. I had gone through conversion as a you;ng man. It didn't stick. I noticed that they were enthusiastic for converts but extremely harsh to anyone who was falling away or had fallen away. Questioning the revisionist history that they spouted was not acceptable. I can imagine some of the ostracism that you will endure. Depending on where you live, it could be almost unbearable at times. Arm yourself with facts and the knowledge that you are strong enough to withstand the onslaught of guilt-slinging which you will face. One more thing, there is a website, exmormon.org, to help along the way.
The Antidote
tioteo comments on Apr 2, 2018:
First, I have to recognize that I am in such a mood. Next, I have to decide if I want to change it. Then, I have to focus my mind to a positive place while my eyes are closed and I breathe deeply. OR I just make up my mind to get the heck out of that place. It's definitely mind over mood for me.
Former Mormons: What broke your shelf?
tioteo comments on Apr 2, 2018:
I was a convert that didn't take. I went to services and the rest of the group totally ignored me. Not being made to feel welcome has the effect of "They don't want me." It was a good thing because I started to look into the history of the church from the point of view of outsiders to the faith. It didn't take long to see what a charlatan and conman that Joe Smith was.

Anyone else have a chronic illness that changed your perspective on life?
tioteo comments on Apr 1, 2018:
I have Chrinic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS, sometimes CFIDS, or new term SEID --Systemic Exertion Intolerance Disease). The cause is unknown; there is no cure; some doctors don't even accept it as a diagnosis. For me, it's like a bad case of flu: body aches, weakness, lack of physical and mental ambition. I am not symptomatic all the time but never know when I will be. It can be for days on end, a day here and there, or part of a day. It crept up on me for about five years and finally forced my retirement before I intended. We are having some success in alleviating symptoms, but there are days when I feel like a limp dishrag. It has taught me to take advantage of the good periods that come and appreciate the meaningful people in my life.

Why can't more people in our world be like this?
tioteo comments on Mar 31, 2018:
Some of it comes from one's upbringing. Many people are brought up to expect a tangible reward for anything/everything they do. They never reach the point where the doing is the reward. It is difficult for some people to achieve this, and many never do.

tioteo comments on Mar 29, 2018:
I would want to talk with my maternal grandmother, the most decent and honorable person I've ever known. I would ask about her background, her raising, my mom. Of the famous people, I would choose Mark Twain. He could see the joy, the tragedy, and the folly of life.
