Terrible idea. I put more trust in our elected representatives in the House and the Senate than in 5 Supreme Court justices. The Founding Fathers knew what they were doing.

@Robecology My techniques with tomatoes I have learned over the years. First is care of the soil. Here in Florida, we have areal problem with nematodes -- soil worms which damage the roots of tomato plants and other plants as well, and drastically curtail the productivity and longevity of plants. Every couple of years I treat the soil for nematodes. I also add a lot organic matter to the soil -- hay mulch, grass clippings, and plant debris. Second, I grow the plants in raised rows to prevent damage from too much rainfall. Third, I use regular 10-10-10 fertilizer. Fourth, I grow the plants in circular wire. cages about 40 inches in diameter, and train the leaves and branches on the frame as they grow. hat makes the plant continue to grow upward. Finally, if we have had no recent rain, I water about every two days, just enough to dampen the soil well, but not saturate it. Hope this helps. .

Well that is a bit of a letdown, so what was the idea then?
wordywalt replies on Apr 9, 2019:
I don't remember the question, but it had to do with a society of tribes and tribal warlords and the movement from such a society to that of the nation state. The idea I used was "transfer of loyalty. People of tribes, people are virtually forced to join a tribe or clan, Such a tribe or clan may be based on ethnicity, religion, and simple authoritarian power. The tribe provides security, social significance and a sense of belonging, and economic opportunity. People will only leave such tribes when it is no longer meting some of the basic needs and there is a real alterative and people see it as viable and productive for them. In the West the key was industrialization which dew people to cities, with formation of institutions processes, and structures to form and support the nation state. In fact, few if any areas have formed strong and enduring nation states which have not gone through industrialization. On the other hand, look at today's failed stated in Africa and the Middle Est. They and most Moslem countries are all dominated by ethnic and/or religious tribes and have not gone through full industrialization. China is another example of transfer of loyalty. When the Communists took over in the late 1940s, they removed hundreds of tribal warlords, took away all of their wealth and property, and either killed them or humiliated and "re-educated" them. hey broke down the tribes and forced their people to look to the state for security, opportunity and meaning. Industrialization and formal nation state institutions and processes followed. In short, transfer of loyalty and industrializations are key ingredients to the formation of enduring nation states. Given the lack of those factors and the tribal nature of those :countries, American interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan were doomed to failure.

@Storm1752 Let me just recommend three sources who talk about religion, how it works to control people, and its effects. The first is the writings of the German philosopher Luidwig Feuerbach. The second and most powerful source is Erich Fromm's book ESCAPE FROM FREEDOM. Fromm describes why so many people succumb to the lure of political and religious total system ideologies (ideologies which purport to include, explain and control everything), how those ideologies then gain control over people, and what the effects are. The third is writings on existentialism. Existentialism takes the stance that there is no inherent meaning in the universe. It, and life simple exist. It is up to each and every one of us to construct our own meaning through what we think, believe, and do. And, we are personally responsible for our decisions and actions and their consequences, for in each case we could have chosen otherwise. . .

I use just regular 10-10-10 fertilizer. That is fertilizer that is 10 percent each nitrates, phosphates, and potassium. It also helps that I add a lot of organic matter (hay mulch, grass clippings, and plant debris) to the soil. r To keep powdery mildew and other fungi from attacking the squash, I spray the soil with fungicide before I dig it up for planting. Also the soil here is prone to nematode infestations. Heavy nematode infestations badly damage plant roots and limit productivity and longevity, particularly tomatoes. Every year or two I also treat the soil to greatly reduce the nematode infestations.
