What type of tomatoes does everyone like to plant?
wordywalt comments on May 27, 2018:
Over the years, I have grown many varieties, including the Cherokee Purple.. After receiving a gift of black heirloom tomato seeds from my daughter, I was so impressed with the taste (sweet and tangy), texture and juiciness, That they are the only tomatoes I grow any more. They are head and shoulders above any other variety I have ever tried. I save seeds from each year's harvest and use them to grow my own plants. Incidentally, I have seeds to share if you would like some. Just send me your name and mailing address and I will send you a few seeds.
What has agnostic.com provided for you?

Agnostic.com has provided what I wanted -- some good dialogue, some challenges to my thinking, comradeship with good, intelligent people, some sharing of the human condition. That is quite a lot.

Boy I miss having a Garden so much.?
wordywalt comments on May 27, 2018:
I am not sure that I would go that far, but we could certainly reduce our food costs. I give a LOT of vegetables with neighbors, but have no one to trade with. I think that I am one of only two serious vegetable gardener in the entire neighborhood..
>How will you vote?
wordywalt comments on May 27, 2018:
I will vote for the candidates who are (1) most likely to act responsibly to make our governments serve us well, (2) most likely to act on behalf of ALL of our people, (3) most likely to act with honor, integrity, honesty, and morality, (4) most likely to act to preserve and strengthen the integrity of our democracy. At this point, I see very few, if any Republicans who deserve my vote.

Ok Donto I have a pineapple top. What do I have to do to get this thing to grow?
wordywalt comments on May 26, 2018:
Just plant it and keep it watered. But, do not expect quick results. It will take 4 to 5 years before it will prouce a pineapple. Also, the plant is vulnerable to freezing weather.

It's interesting when I bring up Ayn Rand people write the opposite of what she is saying.
wordywalt comments on May 25, 2018:
Let me add that Rand was saying the the individual is all that is important, that we -- alone -- are responsible for our creations and that we, alone deserve the entire fruits of our efforts. That is nothing but an egocentric pile of crap manufactured by a self-absorbed moral idiot. When we create an idea,an invention, a piece of writing, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before and laid the intellectual scaffolding on which we built. Without them, we would be nothing. Similarly, there are always people and agencies -- including governments --- who have helped us to become who and what we are. To ever say that we did it all by ourselves is pure self-absorbed bullshit!

What's the difference between anecdotal evidence and scientific evidence?
wordywalt comments on May 25, 2018:
Anecdotal evidence is simply an analysis of events that occur in a natural context or setting. Most scientific studies start with a null hypothesis to be disproved, and a design of study to test the validity or invalidity of the hypothesis. Both methods can yield valid results, and both (depending on the knowledge and skill of the observers and the design of the study)can fail to produce good data and conclusions..
It's interesting when I bring up Ayn Rand people write the opposite of what she is saying.
wordywalt comments on May 25, 2018:
You are still wrong about what Rand was trying to say. If you want to be objective, look into what the ritics are really aying and the grounds for their remarks, instead of ignoring them and simply trying to object to the remarks. Grow up intellectually and morally, young man.

The majority of Christians go to church because they are looking for friendship.
wordywalt comments on May 25, 2018:
I think you are wrong. Most people go th church because they believe in the religion and because they are concerned about their "salvation." As a child and teenager with religious parents, that is what I observed.
The Baptist church I drive past often has one of those signs where churches put their pithy sayings.

What do you think about the politically correct situation?
wordywalt comments on May 25, 2018:
It is not a question of political correctness. It is a question of what expresses disregard for the human dignity of persons or groups. If you can't see that, you have a problem and may be part of the problem.
It was suggested to me by someone on this site to read Nietzsche.
wordywalt comments on May 25, 2018:

Why do some humans have the desire to feel superior to other humans?

wordywalt comments on May 24, 2018:
I have never felt that I have to hide anything about myself. I simply do not wear my beliefs on my sleeve. When I feel the need to express myself on an issue, I do so -- in a civil and non-aggressive manner. However, when someone has done or said something which expresses bigotry, falsehood, or which is disrespectful and/or hurtful, I do respond with passion.

Draft of Arizona school science standards removes evolution wording
wordywalt comments on May 24, 2018:
Because evangelical "true believers" are so blindly and deeply wedded to the biblical creation myth that they feel that evolution undermines the "truth" of the Bible, ergo of their religion. We must fight against these efforts without fail. When I was a high school teacher in central Florida in 1966, I put my job and career on the line to resist such efforts against evolution. I was teaching biology, and my principal came to me and directed me to NOT teach about evolution. I responded that as a science teacher, I had the obligation to deal with all of the principles and facts of science, and did not have the right to withhold any. My principle responded, "It's your ass." I did teach a full unit on evolution and had no complaints from the community. Stand up to ignorance, superstition and mindless "true belief."

Is Reality Just a Figment of Our Imagination?
wordywalt comments on May 23, 2018:
No, our reality is not a figment of our imagination in the way you insinuate. Our reality is constructed through our interactions with our environment. We develop cognitive schema which we used to interpret and analyze data from our interactions. We then build cognitive structures or patterns of meaning which inform and guide us.

wordywalt comments on May 22, 2018:
All of our cognitive structures, including our definition of self, are constructed in our own minds from our interactions with our environment. . We define who we are, what we believe in, what we value, what our standards are, and much more. This mental construct is our sense of self.We could not function as a human organism without such structures.

Why is there so much anger here?
wordywalt comments on May 22, 2018:
There are 2 main sources of anger: (1) outrage at the incivility and lack of morality in the behavior of irrational haters and fear-mongers, and (2) dissatisfaction with oneself which the person has difficulty dealing with. I often feel anger toward those in the first case, but I am not angry about who I am and/or my circumstance.

Do people become more bigoted as they age?
wordywalt comments on May 22, 2018:
Most people do NOT become more bigoted with age. Usually, the bigoted person has become so by late teens to early adulthood. They then tend to identify with and associate with others of the same angry, irrational, hate-filled, and fear-filled ilk -- forming a self-reinforcing culture. In effect they give over theair thought processes to the irrationality of the bigotry of the group. For some reason, he same thing is now happening to your mother. She has given control over who she is and what she thinks to the culture of bigotry.

What happens when we die?
wordywalt comments on May 22, 2018:
There is absolutely no reason to believe that when we die our consciousness continues to exist. You are falling into the same trap that religious people do when they believe that we have a soul and that soul continues to live after our bodies die. It is simply a selfish expression of a desire to live forever, to believe that we are something more than we are. Our consciousness is nothing more than the cognitive structures and schema which our brains construct to make sense of our environment. That cognitive structures and those schema do not exist outside of a living, functioning brain -- period! Face reality -- with dignity!

Penguins mate once and stay together for life.
wordywalt comments on May 20, 2018:
Relationships for penguins are a much simpler and elemental matter -- propagation. Human relationships are much more complex and we often get into them for the wrong reasons. When we do that, those relationships are likely to fail. But, if we are smarter than penguins, we learn from our mistakes and do not repeat them.

How have your priorities changed over time?
wordywalt comments on May 20, 2018:
As a young man I focused on defining myself and on providing for my family. In my productive years I focused on accomplishing something worthwhile, on synthesizing learning, experience, and thought to build and implement useful programs of action. Today, I focus on a few close relationships, on maintaining my mental and physical strength, and on the simple pleasures of living in the moment.
How do you define a quality of life that makes life worth living?
wordywalt comments on May 20, 2018:
I am 81 years old. Over time aging and its effects have caused me to give up things that I really enjoyed -- that I often thought I could not do without. The hardest has been giving up reading due to vision problems. But, there are still things that I still enjoy and I focus on them. Still, my mental acuity is as good as it has ever been, and my lifetime of experience enriches my understanding to a point that I could not have attained as a young man. Similarly, I work HARD to maintain my physical strength and am much stronger than the usual octogenarian. My point is that if you fear losing your physical and mental capacity, your only answer is to work hard to prevent the loss. Otherwise ], your own behavior leads to the things you fear.

wordywalt comments on May 19, 2018:
I hope that you do not mean to take your statement as far as if appear that you might. Any relationship necessarily involves give and take. Similarly, any relationship which requires one to compromise central and deeply held beliefs, and values is a relationship which should not occur.

Science can answer moral questions

If one defines clearly what one considers his or her basis for a moral coce, then science can clearly help to define if specific actions match that code. But, th act of setting the assumptions on which the moral code is based, and on stating the basic premises of that code, science does not play a part. Reasoning does.
