How do people feel about people who are childless?
wordywalt comments on May 20, 2018:
Some people don't want children, and that is their choice -- and mp one else's. It is not for others to judge.
How have your priorities changed over time?
wordywalt comments on May 20, 2018:
As a young man I focused on defining myself and on providing for my family. In my productive years I focused on accomplishing something worthwhile, on synthesizing learning, experience, and thought to build and implement useful programs of action. Today, I focus on a few close relationships, on maintaining my mental and physical strength, and on the simple pleasures of living in the moment.
How do you define a quality of life that makes life worth living?
wordywalt comments on May 20, 2018:
I am 81 years old. Over time aging and its effects have caused me to give up things that I really enjoyed -- that I often thought I could not do without. The hardest has been giving up reading due to vision problems. But, there are still things that I still enjoy and I focus on them. Still, my mental acuity is as good as it has ever been, and my lifetime of experience enriches my understanding to a point that I could not have attained as a young man. Similarly, I work HARD to maintain my physical strength and am much stronger than the usual octogenarian. My point is that if you fear losing your physical and mental capacity, your only answer is to work hard to prevent the loss. Otherwise ], your own behavior leads to the things you fear.

A conservative I know asked why is it that liberals hated the rich.
wordywalt comments on May 19, 2018:
I hate the undue influence that they have, and the fact that many of them really want to lord it over over andxd take advantage of us at their whim. But Warren Buffett and Bill Gates are two fine, moral rich men -- unlike the Koch's, Trumps, and too damned many others.

wordywalt comments on May 19, 2018:
I hope that you do not mean to take your statement as far as if appear that you might. Any relationship necessarily involves give and take. But a relationship which requires one to give up things that are central to one's definition of oneself is a relationship which should not occur. Similarly, any relationship which requires one to compromise central and deeply held beliefs, and values is a relationship which should not occur.

Science can answer moral questions
wordywalt comments on May 18, 2018:
If one defines clearly what one considers his or her basis for a moral coce, then science can clearly help to define if specific actions match that code. But, th act of setting the assumptions on which the moral code is based, and on stating the basic premises of that code, science does not play a part. Reasoning does.

Aspartame Side Effects
wordywalt comments on May 18, 2018:
That is a bunch of garbage. I have been using aspastame for decades. I have never had a migraine or epilectic seizure. My mental health is good and I do not suffer from depression. I have no phobias. No proof exists that use of aspatame have ANY relationship to hyperactivity, MS or chronic fatigues syndrome or the purported fibromyalgia, or birth defeds of any kind. The statement is so outrageously false that I find it infuriating. The statement itself is phobic with no grounds.
In another post I had written, a comment came up in regards to Mueller not indicting a sitting ...
wordywalt comments on May 18, 2018:
Your understanding is correct. Mueller will issue a report to Congress in which he will spell out the provable offenses by Trump and provide the supporting evidence. It is then up to Congress to impeach, built on the report. That is why is absolutely essential that the 2018 election turn the House Democrat -- so that they will act on the Mueller report in a legal, moral, and patriotic manner.

wordywalt comments on May 16, 2018:
I reject your question. When I taught at the college level, I had a female student who took a job at a mental foundry just to prive she could do it. When her work was so good that the boss told her that she was doing a better job than most of the men, she quit. She had accomplished her purpose -- proving that she -- a woman -- could do it.

At what age do you start to feel "old"?
wordywalt comments on May 15, 2018:
If you take care of your body and mind, you still have a lot of good years ahead of you. At age 81, I am as mentally alert as I ever was. At age 69 I started working out with weights and gradually increased the weights to the point that I am stronger today than I was as a teenager -- but endurance is limited. Yes, over time, the infirmities of age make us give up things which we loved, but we learn to adjust and treasure the things we do yet have even more. Relationships are deeper and calmer, but less sexual.

Your version comes directly from Ray Bradbury's short story, "The Sound of Thunder."

Young People Are Lonelier Than Their Elders : NPR
wordywalt comments on May 7, 2018:
I am not surprised. Younger people are still in the process of defining who they are and who they want to be. They are more emotionally insecure and more self-conscious, more afraid of what others may think of them. At old, many people know exactly who they are, and many of them are fully comfortable with who they are. In a way, lonliness is clearly related to insecurity.
