For those who knew their grandparents what were they like?
wordywalt comments on Dec 12, 2017:
My paternal grandfather died 17 years before I was born. My paternal grandmother was as an emotionally distant person who tended toward making strong statemenst which sometime stung. My maternal grandmother was a kind, loving woman, and my maternal grandfather was somewhat standoffish, but kind tome. However, he was not always so kind to all of my cousins.
What does your in-laws think about you being agnostic?
wordywalt comments on Dec 12, 2017:
They know that I am not a believer, and they accept and respect me as a person and member of the family. We do not discuss it. In fact, in many ways I feel closer to them than to my sister and remaining cousins.

I was definitely more anxious when I believed. Today, at the age of 80, I am neither anxious or depressed.
If you were to write a book, what would it be about?
wordywalt comments on Dec 11, 2017:
I have often thought of writing a book entitled "Suwannee Spirits" about the culture of that area of north Florida in which I grew up, and describing he unique individuals who populated that poor, rural, somewhat wild area. If I ever get around to completing it, it will be somewhat in the mode of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings., I wrote a lot professionally, but not in other genre.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION in intimate relationships.
wordywalt comments on Dec 11, 2017:
I've often said that losers own problems and do not let go of them;' winners find and own solutions. To me, the only realistic answer is to agree on a concrete plan of action to resolve the conflict or problem, get commitment from both sides to act, then do it!
Should there be a Pro Choice litmus test for people who want to run as a Democratic candidate?

Can you be an agnostic or atheist and still believe in angels, demons, ghosts and life after death?
wordywalt comments on Dec 11, 2017:
No.
Can you be religious and an atheist at the same time?
wordywalt comments on Dec 11, 2017:
Every religion is a failed attempt to come up with a total system ideology -- an ideological system which purports to e\include and explain everything. Human beings have been attempting to formulate such ideologies since humans have existed so that their do not have to face their relative ignorance and powerlessness. Even brilliant people like Einstein have suffered from this "illness." He could not accept Heisenberg's uncertainty principle because he did not believe that God would play dice with the universe . He also sought a unified field theory -- a scientific ideology which included and explained everything.
Disagreements in believers and non-believers relationships. What's your experience?
wordywalt comments on Dec 11, 2017:
My experience is not good. An old, respected, and trusted friend (who was always religious) became more and more fervent in his old age (and more and more to the extreme political right). For many years we had supported and aided each other in our professional pursuits. But, in r3cent years, he became more and more e fervent evangelical (and more and more to the extreme ,irrational political right), and he bombarded me with in incessant stream of religious issues and conversion attempts, mixed with extreme po9litical tracts. I was forced to tell him that I will no longer discuss religion, politics, or economics with him. He quit only I failed to respond to him on a number of pointed transmission. We now communicate only rarely. I valued our friendship.
I have so far handled my wife's religiosity well.
wordywalt comments on Dec 11, 2017:
I would say to her, if she were my wife, " You assume that morality is grounded solely in religion and only Christians can be moral. I reject that, I believe that all people can and should always act in a moral manner. And, by a moral manner, I mean always treating others with full dignity and respect and showing concern for their well-being."

wordywalt comments on Dec 11, 2017:
I have an old friend for over 50 years. He was always religious, but generally rational and intelligent. In his old age, he has become so obsessed with religion, bombarding me with preposterous religious ideology and predictions and constantly trying to convert me. At the same time he turned to the extreme political right. We had been communicating several times a week for many years, but it got so bad I had to tell him that I will not discuss religion, politics, or economics with him. He finally got the message when I did not respond to his continued attempts. How, we communicate only 3 -4 times a year, on nothing of substance.

Are there any agnostic Trump supporters?
wordywalt comments on Dec 11, 2017:
Yes. there are. Some are people who grew up steeped in both religion an in right wing politics. The athiests in that group managed to get rid of attachment to theology, but hold on to reactionary political ideology. Some are white supremacists. Some are lsuch true believer ideologues that they will choose to support Trump to avoid any constructive action in our country. Some are simply too embroiled in the culture of greed to be rational and moral.
Some have alluded to it, but let me be the first to say humbug

wordywalt comments on Dec 11, 2017:
Your post rambles among unrelated topics. As for the "prosperity gospel" it is simply a perversion of Christianity, saying that if you follow Christian dogma, you will be rewarded with success and wealth in this life, as well as in afterlife. Original Christian theology never claimed that. In effect, it is also saying that , no matter HOW a person acquires his or her wealth, the fact that the person has wealth shows that God approves of the person. It is tripe designed intentionally to say, in effect, that greed is good, and to placate the greedy. It is peddled by demagogic charlatans who see it as a means of acquiring wealth and power for themselves.

How do you communicate a refusal to donate to religious groups? (more inside)
wordywalt comments on Dec 9, 2017:
If I come across one of the religious stands, I nod politely as I pass by. If I get a telephone request , my stock answer is: " I'm sorry, but I do not respond to telephone solicitations from, AMY organization "(which is true -- I consider such calls an invasion of my privacy) and hang up before they can say anything else If they come to the door, I turn them away politely.

wordywalt comments on Dec 9, 2017:
If my child had committed a crime knowingly, I would urge him or her to turn himself or herself in, and try to ensure that they had a good attorney so that the trial would be fair. If I felt he or she had been falsely accused, I would do everything possible to see that the result was an acquittal.

wordywalt comments on Dec 9, 2017:
While science reveals aspects of the environment and the body of science knowledge is simply a description of that natural world, science and technology uses those facts and principles revealed to go farther or in different world than "nature" might have gone on its own -- so I don't think we can call it naturalistic. Science and technology are deliberate. The natural world is one of bounded chaos -- ther\ amalgam of forces and entities at a particular time and place.

Under what circumstances is it ok for a person's ethics to be compromised?
wordywalt comments on Dec 8, 2017:
It is NEVER okay to compromise one's ethics. However, most of our value choices are not between absolute rights and absolute wrongs. Instead they are between comparative goods, or in some situations, the comparative wrongs. Sometimes the choices we have are all bad, and the question becomes which is worst. In all cases, the standard should be: Which choice presents the least violation of human dignity and well-being.

Is US Nationaism worst than Religion?
wordywalt comments on Dec 8, 2017:
Aggressive nationalism is often driven by, or at the least aided by, total system political or religious ideologies , and/or by ethnocentrism (of which religion plays a major part in the false image of cultural superiority). Examples: the USSR, Israel, Iran, the British Empire, US foreign policy in the late 1800s and early 1900s, etc.

Theory of mind: the idea that not all knowledge is universal knowledge. Your thoughts?
wordywalt comments on Dec 8, 2017:
I would agree that knowledge is not universal. Knowledge is both cultural and personal. Cultural knowledge is the body of accumulated beliefs, ideologies, accepted wisdoms, accepted proofs contained within a culture. Each culture has its own "knowledge." Knowledge is also personal -- the patterns of meaning or cognitive structures which we build in our own minds.

When I did drive I always drove 5 - 10 MPH above the speed limit on the highway, and at or slightly above the speed limit in the city .In really hilly country, when I topped a hill and could see all the way to the crest of the next hill, I would add another 5 - 10 mph.
Difference between countries
wordywalt comments on Dec 7, 2017:
I live in the USA. Here the question is more a question of what state a person lives in, even what town or city one lives in. I live in Florida, but I could NOT live in in most of north Florida, Ocala, or St. Augustine. Those locations are almost entirely steeped in racist and reactionary politics, mixed with evangelical Christian true believer zeal. In that sense, those areas have changed very little in ideology from the Civil War ear (1860-1865) An ancestor of mine was forced to flee St. Augustine during the Civil War because he opposed slavery and the war itself, and wound up in Indiana. Larger cities like Tampa and Miami (and their suburbs) allow a person much greater freedom to believe as he or she chooses. I would not choose to live in South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, or Texas. Since the 1960s, both Oklahoma and Kansas have shown real regression toward the reactionary right since the 1980s -- regrettably.

Should football be banned in U.S. High schools?
wordywalt comments on Dec 7, 2017:
I played football in high school and in the US Army. Over the years I suffered a broken nose (twice), torn ligaments in the shoulder, torn cartilage in the knee, a badly pulled groin muscle, a twisted back which later resulted in a herniated disc, and a "stinger". I also coached high school football for 4 years, and my coaching partner and I made sure that our players were in top condition, were always alert and on their toes -- literally and physically. and with the equipment which would minimize injuries. Over 4 years, the most serious injury we had among our players was 1 dislocated shoulder. If I have a son today of high school age, I would not let him play unless his coaches took the same care that we did.

Is the idea about a ”Chosen People” seem smug?
wordywalt comments on Dec 6, 2017:
Consider this as a reason for the origin of the "chosen people." If Moses existed and if the esodus is true what it shows is that Moses was both a great leader and a great con man. The Hebrews on the exodus was an unruly, obstreperous bunch of desert nomads whose social behavior had gotten so bad that it was threatening to tear the entire group apart. So Moses went up on the mountain and carved the 10 commandments dealing with the tribes behavior. Then he came down and told his people that God had made them his "chosen people" if they would agree to live by the commandments and worship him as their only god. If it happened that way, it was a world-class con job and the source of purported status.

I once worked with a lady who, if you told her anything, would tell others. We joked that the three primary means of communication were telephone, telegraph, and "tell MdGraw." Another thing is insincere language -- flattery, excessive gushing, etc. Another is outright lying or deliberate distortion. All of those would give me cause to examine what they say very carefully and to be careful about what I say.
It seems that the Christian God can't forgive without a blood sacrifice. Who or what made that rule?

Wow. If they are able to create actual living organisms, that will blow the creation myth away!
