After 41 years in the work force as a planner, demographer, economist, financial programmer, tech support manager, technical writer, development manager and data architect, I've recently retired. So I have the time. I'm liberal, atheist, funny and quick. I love watching someone eat my cooking and enjoy it, and life without wine hardly seems worth the effort. Got a lot of friends around town including my 2 grown kids. First drink is on me.

zeuser comments on Sep 17, 2020:
Capitalism is just an economic concept that has been popularly expanded to include a lot of other ideological by-products. Economics is the study of the production and distribution of resources. Capitalism suggests that land, labor and capital are the components of one system to do this, coupled with entrepreneurial motivation. By itself, it doesn't enable any nasty behavior or guarantee any ultimate benefit, that is the role of society and, more broadly, civilization. Economic phenomena do not exist in a vacuum, other factors also act to either inspire or inhibit any particular motivations, and nasty vs. beneficial is, ultimately, a value judgment.

I see a sycophantic suck up with a sadistic malevolence enabled by proximity to an equally malevolent power. zeuser comments on Sep 17, 2020:
All of this is possible, but these speculative scenarios take place in a vacuum devoid of the effects his followers will exert via violence and intimidation. That, IMO, is Trump's ace in the hole - his ability to inspire his dispirited well-armed base to acts of insurrection and civil rebellion. And all of this may occur before the next administration even takes office, between what I think will be an electoral defeat and the actual transfer of power. However, the general non-mouth breathing public has an ace or two up its sleeve as well - the insurrection's incompetence and lack of coherent leadership. The potential rebels do not answer to a single unambiguous command structure, and are thus subject to disorganization and infighting. That, however, would be enough to disrupt a lot of our institutions, and may be augmented by a motivated and competent foreign intervention. It's all guesswork until things happen. I hope I see this jerkwad behind bars, I really do. It won't be easy.

I've got mixed feelings about this. If we memorialize people long dead for their positive accomplishments *in spite* of their beliefs or practices we now deem immoral or inappropriate, I can see the argument for the memorial. If we memorialize people specifically *because* of their support for acts we now deem immoral or inappropriate, that's not right. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who founded the Ku Klux Klan, and William Rand Kenan Sr., who participated in Wilmington "race riot" massacre come to mind. There are others, but these two have been a focus here in NC.

zeuser comments on Sep 14, 2020:
Everything will eventually come to light if the relationship lasts long enough, you can be sure of that. You need to balance the impact your revelations will have immediately before things are that serious vs. how much damage it will cause if you don't reveal it till later. I can't say what's best for you. I personally prefer to get that stuff out as soon as possible, both mine and my potential partner's, but that's just me. The lynching mentality has a long and terrible history here in the USA, and it evidently never went entirely away. It's an oldie but goodie for the trumperoos. I hear he's also revived calls to lock up President Obama, the black guy. Why? Trumped up accusations not based in reality. The parallels are there for all to see. If he thought he could get away with it, he'd be calling for people to shoot President Obama too. In fact, he may start doing exactly that if he gets more desperate.

Rudeness seems to be more fashionable these days, as those who feel aggrieved but who lack the wit or vocabulary to defend their positions try to be "right" by being loud and vulgar while not listening to any other opinions. Being nice is equated with being politically correct - which is perceived as a big flaw for many. The ability to avoid personal conflict by hiding behind a computer alias has also led to this unfortunate state of affairs. It's a shame, civility is the glue that holds any society together.
