Any tips regarding self-employment?
zeuser comments on Sep 5, 2018:
Make sure you have enough in the bank to pay the bills when things get slow. Keep detailed records of all transactions. Keep your personal and business finances separate. Your reputation is your business, don't let anyone or anything, including yourself, stain it in any way. Do not underprice your products or services. And take care of yourself, you are looking at long hours.
Dealbreakers: Friends and Partners
zeuser comments on Sep 5, 2018:
My friends can sleep with whoever they want. So can my partner, just once or until I find out.
How do you relax?
zeuser comments on Sep 5, 2018:
I've always enjoyed tossing one or two back at the local pub with my pals. I like a bowl and music on the back porch. I can get lost in a good novel. I am about a month away from getting a doggie, that works wonders. Pocket billiards can be very zen. Good luck, partner.
It goes without saying you can't change the past .
zeuser comments on Sep 5, 2018:
It's a legitimate question, but you gotta consider what would've happened on the alternate timeline: good people who you likely would not have met, nasty people who you would have otherwise avoided, other mistakes you would have made instead, strengths you would never develop, weaknesses that might not otherwise have persisted. It's an interesting thought experiment, ultimately it can only cause you self doubt. You live your life, you take the chances, you get some stuff right, you screw other things up, it's human existence. There are no do overs, and ya know, I'm cool with that. ?
What is your biggest fear?

I don't want a lingering death. Death itself is fine. I've had friends pass with ALS, emphysema, and cancer. I've seen others struggle with crippling depression. It scares me.

What's your idea of marriage with or without children?
zeuser comments on Sep 3, 2018:
Some people need artificial boundaries, others chafe at them. Marriage is appealing when you are in love and think that things will never change, and sometimes it works out that way. Sometimes it works for quite a while, right up until it doesn't. Enjoying outside friendships within the context of either marriage or domestic partnership depends on what each person allows the other to do, and that comes down to trust, with or without a license. And in my opinion, the Abrahamic religions, similar to any other religion, are oppressive nonsense intended to control the lives of others. YMMV

zeuser comments on Aug 31, 2018:
Out of necessity, I've done it a couple of times. It's always scary cuz you have no idea how things will play out, it's natural to be scared when facing the unknown. Remember this, there is no courage without fear, and no true success without the possibility of failure. None have a sure or certain future or obvious path, and failure along the way will indeed follow any significant change. You control only two things, your attitude and your persistence. Use them to overcome your struggle. Good luck. ?

For believers, fear of atheists is fueled by fear of death
zeuser comments on Aug 29, 2018:
To be fair, most religious people are indoctrinated at a young age by authority figures, including but not limited to their parents. Distrust of others with different beliefs (or lack of beliefs) has a tribal component, while fear of death undoubtedly contributes significantly. You combine that with peer approval of the culture, and atheists become objects of ridicule and contempt. Good article.
Is your workplace atheist friendly.
zeuser comments on Aug 29, 2018:
I'm retired now, but my last employer had a policy that didn't allow any religious or political posters or electronic media. I never made a secret of my atheism, and nobody seemed to care. I was certainly outnumbered, but not pressured or harassed. I was there for 28 and a half years, openly secular the whole time. They also covered domestic partners in their dependent and spousal insurance coverage too regardless of orientation.

I am living how I want to live now, and that's quite satisfying. Have to concentrate on keeping healthy, that's the prime directive now.
I recently joined a couple of other free dating sites, and I am quite open about being atheist.
zeuser comments on Aug 29, 2018:
To coin a phrase, there are some fine people who hold religious beliefs. But we each have different levels of tolerance for them, so you should keep doing this if yours is low. I'd do it too if someone so identified with religion that they felt compelled to put that in a dating site profile. I also eliminate people who say they don't drink, that saves a lot of time too. 8-)

Anyone have advice on how to come out ofthe atheist closet?
zeuser comments on Aug 28, 2018:
It never works when you hide the truth, either with silence or by lying. Everyone eventually finds out, always. Always. I feel it's better to control the narrative rather than to let it slip out without your direction. Be courageous, it's the right thing to do. Good luck, brother.
I've been with my current partner for nearly 6 years.
zeuser comments on Aug 28, 2018:
The 7 year itch is a real thing. It's the point in the relationship when your partner feels trapped, that he is missing out on things he'd be able to pursue if not for you, and his resentment grows each day. Sometimes it blows over, and your relationship recovers to be stronger than ever. When is it beyond salvaging? When you find yourself unable to swallow any more of his crap. Everyone has a different point of no return. Taking the step to separate yourself from the drama isn't easy, especially if there are children involved, but the old saying here applies, if you think you have a problem, you probably do. That's all I got. See a counselor by yourself, if he won't join you. My ex decided to move out just about 10 years ago, after 28 years of marriage. I let her go without a fight, best move I've ever made. Good luck, DNB.
Nothing else can be said when the truth and facts are considered completely irrelevant!

Philosophy
zeuser comments on Aug 27, 2018:
Edmund Husserl. He invented phenomenology separating consciousness from the things it was directed at separating physical and mental being based on intentionality, articulated that being in time is limited by mortal boundaries, and heavily influenced the direction of Heidegger (the nazi, but a clear phenomenologist) and Sartre's existentialism (pour soi vs. en soi) . Though he was not strictly a philosopher, I also admire Thorstein Veblen, who advanced institutionalism as a valid school of economic thought, and was the most vocal non-marxist critic of capitalism and the inherent problem with production purely for profit. I probably oversimplified, but it's been a while, and this is a limited forum.

I get some of this every so often, "who's that guy in the sexy shirt?" I like to compliment my bartender as soon as I get her attention and tell her she looks great. The corollary to this is that a lot of people have no idea how to take a compliment, they get uncomfortable and make a counter claim, "oh, I look terrible today, this is an old outfit, etc." But you're right, a small compliment can make anyone's day. More people should do it.

Do you think the actual Republican Party exists anymore or has it morphed into something else?
zeuser comments on Aug 24, 2018:
This has been coming for decades, and was accelerated with the abolishment of the fairness doctrine by Saint Ronnie and the subsequent rise of Fox news and right wing propagandists like Limbaugh. It was sharpened by the incredible vitriol unleashed against the Clintons and the move to more blatantly racist republican campaigns that enjoyed wide success. The affiliation with the religious right lent the imprimatur of godly righteousness to the whole shady effort, and that was the icing on the cake. Mix all that up with big money, and here we are. Now the dems have flaws, but the repubs are soulless corporate hacks stoking racism and religious fervor shilling for the big money masters.

As the relationship develops, all of the baggage each of you carry will inevitably be unpacked. Would you prefer your partner finding out about all of it on their own, the hard way? Or maybe you'd prefer to take control of the discovery process yourself? I'd argue for honesty. Hiding things dooms relationships, it doesn't save them.

Exorcising the Ghosts of the Sixties - TheHumanist.com
zeuser comments on Aug 22, 2018:
Good article with a lot of very valid points. The 60's were in fact very turbulent, but the end result was quite conflicted compromises which, as the article points out in several examples, were never fully resolved such that the sources of the conflict still lingered, even as the public perception of the issues gradually softened. The reaction to the 60's included the Nixon and Reagan approach to make political capital out of class and regional (and racial) divisions. But the long term legacy was the defunding of public education and the introduction, with Reagan's repeal of the fairness doctrine, of true propaganda into the American discourse. We still pay the price for that circumstance.
