My dad once told me, if you can't figure out why things are happening, the answer is money. The republicans have been paid off or threatened with promised funds being cancelled, sort of like what happened to the Ukrainians, only domestically. When you are motivated solely by money, patriotism, love of country, all that stuff, it's just what you say to get elected. Your soul is gone, replaced by dollar signs and shame.
