I haven't been on AG very much.

Brings back memories, I went to grad school in Philly, lived in center city. Here's an idea for a tour - show people all the places you can park on the street without getting a ticket. Granted, it would be a short tour, but use the idea if you think it might work! Good luck on your new gig. 😁

What is your opinion on Catholic schools? Are they forms of modern brainwashing?
zeuser comments on May 13, 2019:
I attended catholic schools for grades 7-12, and then attended a Jesuit university. It was mostly peer-pressure indoctrination and the dissemination of dogma, not so much brainwashing. In fact, the theology and philosophy I learned in college galvanized my atheism. Now some kids take this more seriously than others, but while my folks both attended church regularly, they weren't deeply doctrinaire. Other kids I knew weren't that lucky, and you could call what they went through brainwashing. But I wouldn't call it a blanket truth.
I don't talk about it much, but mother's day is kinda hard for me.

If you fish in the same pond and use the same bait you'll catch the same kind of fish, over and over. Sometimes when you change your fishing hole and go with another kind of bait you don't catch anything at all, so there's a risk involved. But it sounds like even you think it's time for something different. Don't give up! Good luck, LH.

I am interested in opinions on this statement.
zeuser comments on May 10, 2019:
I think it is more nuanced. We are not all born atheist, we are all born with no preconceived existential philosophy. Indoctrination by a wide range of religious beliefs indeed occurs, but remember, religions categorize *each other* as outsiders, including atheists. Even then, I don't get the sense that all religions hold antipathy towards atheists - some are quite accepting, for example universalist unitarians or buddhists - OR other religious beliefs. The thing that casts people of different beliefs or flavors of non-belief as *the other* is the severity of the dogma in any given religious or philosophical sect. Most organized religions grew simply as a means of controlling other people, and dogma, completely human-made, is the mechanism used to disseminate and harden that control, including demonization of the other, believers in other religious traditions and non-believers alike. It's not necessarily a false statement, it's just so sweeping as to ignore the complexity of the dynamics and motivations of various religious sects. IMHO, of course, worth every penny you paid for it. 8-)

zeuser comments on May 1, 2019:
The "sacrament" of confession. That I needed to tell some guy in a dark room how many times I rubbed one of out I'd go to hell , that made the adolescent me start to reconsider the nature of sin, and once you pull that first thread it all starts to unravel. It all came together when I heard this answer from a personal hero of mine, Linus Pauling. They asked him what he believes, he said "I believe that all complicated phenomena can be explained using simple scientific principles." That resonated with me, and still does 45 years later.

After my divorce, about 9 and a half years ago, I tried both POF and Match. All told I think I had 3 dates, none of which was a second date. Women I was interested in online were generally not interested in me, pretty much like in real life. So I stopped. I did get a date recently on Tinder. Sweet woman, very cute and intelligent, but way too young for me and we both knew it. I've had much better results the old fashioned way. I'm not breaking any records, but it passes the time every so often. It's a crap shoot no matter how you do it.

Granted I live in one of the urban centers of North Kackalacky (the Raleigh area), but I'm surprised by how many people sheepishly say "me too" when I open the door with my admission. Some people say they'll pray for me. (How's that working out for y'all?) Every so often I see someone in the rearview mirror at a stoplight shaking their head and frowning at my Darwin fish. I generally only talk about it when asked, and steer clear of zealots, but I never shy away from admitting it.

zeuser comments on Apr 28, 2019:
People are wired to detect patterns, even when patterns don't exist. Whether it's Tarot cards, tea leaves, planetary motion, reading entrails or casting wands, people see things in the patterns, and those usually reflect a hopeful desire in the pattern reader being "confirmed" by the pattern. As a tool for intelligent introspection, Tarot cards are as good a device to focus attention inward as anything else. But that's all they are. Good luck in your endeavors.

Not sure if this helps, but all experiences are useful, if not immediately then eventually. Negative experiences are often more instructive than positive ones, and positive experience can also lead to net negative results. This characteristic is not limited to spiritual non denominational types. There are plenty of people who have very strong opinions based on nothing who like to appear reasonable, but will not abide any difference of opinion. Usually, logic is not involved, let alone evidence. Here are some steps to take: don't engage with them, get the hell out of earshot - and stay there.

Good writing comes from effective revisions, and if your lucky, from the advice of a good editor. I think it was Hemingway who said something like "All first drafts are shit." Seeing how writers who you like handle certain things can be very educational, but you do have to do it the way you think is best, or risk becoming derivative. Derivative is good in genre fiction, though, so there is that.
