For those who will meet up with family (and friends) this holiday season, here's some advice from Bill Maher on what to do. Summary: shut up about politics 🙂

While on the topic, wish you all the best of the holiday season! Oh, you could talk about site website with family. But then again, pass the gravy!

No that is what religion wants you to sit down and shut up. While they push their crap onto you you are to just shut up and sit down. I have done it enough. Religion is the world accepted mental illness.

Watch Maher's Religulous ahead of time and use keywords from the film to make a game of "Religulous bingo". So when people ask you whether or not you are having a good time and/or trigger one of the keywords, you can then, with a smile, say "bingo" 😉.

What's good for the goose;
Good for the...pass the gravy

Just stayed home this year and enjoyed the day with the kids. Not interested in political drama with the family!

3

Saw a cartoon meme that said "I saved a ton of money this christmas by talking politics at thanksgiving dinner". I, as the only liberal in my family considered this but chickened out.

Me to stepdad (who loves my mom but is a fucking Trumper): Please peel the potatoes in the morning because Mom's arthritis.
Him: I don't peel potatoes, never peeled potatoes, will never peel potatoes.
Me: Weren't you ever in the military?
Him: Nope.
Me: Bone spurs?
LOL Sorry Not Sorry.

I don't peel taters leave the skin on better tasting spuds. No never in the military was never desperate enough to join or forced to join. No did not need a doctors note not to go.

Love, love Bill Maher! Saw him in Denver a few years back, what a hoot!

Man, I really hate bill Maher. I won't be bringing up politics this year, but if someone else dies, I won't give silent assent. Not going to happen.

*does

I'm the only liberal at the table this year. I plan to keep it zipped.

Represent... Best Laid Out Plans.... must be aborted for the Well of You.

You've gotta love Bill Maher.

This has been a rule in our family gatherings forever. And it works. We are a happy family, though we do not always agree politically or religiously. We find other things to talk and laugh about.

2

Part of me doesn't want to let them off the hook.

1

I do not mind talking about politics or anyone else for that matter. What I do mind is someone telling me what to do. Religions do that too.

I don't think there's any reason to get belligerent about it and turn the gathering into a pissing contest, but I also feel that silence equals assent. Even in discussions of divisive topics online, I tell people that I consider it a sign of respect to speak openly and honestly about issues. The purpose is not to flip people per se, but to offer a rationale for holding the views you do. You never know who might be sitting on the fence and too timid themselves to weigh in for fear of dealing with the backlash.

I agree! I saw my dad physically fight someone 1 when i was a kid thanksgiving day because of a foot ball game. There's never any thing on tv or a topic more important than the person next to you. Unless you are next to a negative creep. I'm in love this thanxgiving! I've newly moved from Phoenix to Spokane Washington and I'm riding with my brother and his wife up north Idaho to see bald eagles near a salmon dying place where lots of eagles nest. It will be lots of fun. Have the best thanxgiving ever everyone!

...thanks and the best to you!!!

My wife and I brought our kids up with religion, pretty much. My wife and I and our kids have all come to same conclusion that religion is bullshit. We were, however, Jewish so we were accustomed to bitching about Christian crap but now we see it is all crap. We are grateful, however, that now everybody in our little group is on the same page regarding politics and religion. We are currently laughing at what a terrible threat the caravan of immigrants were coming up through Mexico but now that the midterm elections have past, Trump has forgotten about that terrible threat. Now he just wants to insult and arrest news reporters who have the audacity to ask him more that one question at a press conference.

bill keeps me sane and he keeps me from getting on a plane learning to shoot and being in prison to die

Religion, politics and unions are three things I don't discuss with anybody. It always pisses off someone.

Probably why I’m always bringing that stuff up! “Alienation is communication!” — Abbie Hoffman

I watched his show and he made a really good point about core Trump supporters. If they haven't woken up by now, they won't, so don't waste your time arguing with them. He's right. It's like religious people. The more you press them, the more they dig in. If their brains are going to rewire, it's going to be self rewiring. Like Nixon supporters who hung on until the obvious couldn't be denied. Like Hitler supporters who had to face the reality of his evil at the end. Sad to say, some Hitler fans never gave it up. I suspect it'll be the same with some Trumpsters. They'll re-channel into another Trumpian autocrat. Inanycase, dialogue is now pointless with them.

I have one ..my son and he is unconvincable

@whiskywoman in the same boat with my two son's. Both voted for the orange anus. The oldest is the worst with his support of orange anus. I simply cannot speak to him regarding the repub party. It is heart breaking for me to know both of my children voted for that piece of shit. At least my grandkids know what the hell is going on and voted for progressive Democrats all the way!

@Redheadedgammy I know how you feel my son watches info wars and whats his name drug dude and gets all wound up and he is 6"3 very booming and intimidating and he goes on and on about such totally stupid shit I have to stay in my room and bite my tongue he thinks cause of the tax scam he will not pay any taxes so sad

@whiskywoman oh yes, that moron Alex Jones is someone my oldest son talks about quite often. I usually just get up and leave the room when he starts in about that idiot. I don't know where I went wrong in raising both of my son's. Their father is a RW asshole, who I divorced, perhaps he had more influence than I realized.

@whiskywoman oh dear. Sorry to hear it.

@Redheadedgammy it makes me happy that I never had children. Maybe my child would have been born with a horrible mental or physical defect, maybe my child would grow up to be an Axe Murderer and most disturbing maybe my child would have grown up to be a conservative Republican.? I'm just kidding I wish you lots of luck on Thanksgiving and hope you have a great holiday.

I’m very grateful that my family has the same outlook on religion & politics as I do.
