Two new moderator features for groups: "Most post to author's profile page" and "Deny Post". These options now appear at the top of the post under the "Actions" button drop-down menu. "Move post.." is for posts that, while don't violate the community guidelines, don't match what the moderator wants for their group. If selected, the post is removed from the group but still shows up in the author's profile page and comments on the post show there as well. For "Deny Post", it removes the post from the site. If you have commented on the post, you still get points but the comments don't appear anymore (obviously). We realize that this gives moderators more influence on how their groups are run than before but that's the whole point. Remember, this is a free site and we rely on moderators to help maintain their groups. If you feel that the moderator acted unfairly, take it up with the moderator and if you two are unable to resolve your differences, just leave the group. Yes, this may sound uncaring but we don't have the ability to get involved in disputes. We hope that this mutual understanding between the group moderator(s) and members will help keep posts on track.

Thanks for your efforts.

I can’t see any problems in any of the groups under my control. Light touch and common sense should be the byword for hosts/moderators.

If they are able to take criticism without lashing out!
I have found there are a few Facebook rightwing trolls using right wing set up false information to control the narrative!
I blocked a crude rude insulting condescending admin to stop any further conflict!

I was band from the group because of this Facebook troll!

Yes!

So now these Facebook trolls can fuck with you more!

I blocked an completely rude condescending insulting admin from harassing me further!
I was blocked from the group for stoping an avoiding further conflict!

I call total BS and this gives the Facebook Fascists trolls more power to discriminate against any one they disagree with!

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but you appear to be saying that Moderators NOW have Charte Blanc over practically EVERYTHING that appears on or in ANY Group.
Don't you think that you MAY have just created your own Frankenstein Monsters here?
Do you actually FEEL that we, the Members, aren't adult enough to decide for ourselves what is appropriate, etc, and what is not, after all, peoples opinions, etc, are as different as people are and there will always be clashes, that, Sir, is life and reality and is NOT reality on the main reasons and aims we Atheists and Agnostics strive for?
I have seen and experienced events akin to this decision of yours on innumerable other Sites and INVARIABLY it ALWAYS results in at least ONE Moderator getting a sniff of 'power' and VOILA, we have a new 'Little Dictator' at the helm.
To my mind, you are disrespecting and disparaging your members as whole with this decision, i,e, literally treating us as MERE children and ,I for one, take great exception to to it.

The one ray of hope i have.. is unlike other forums i have been on (where moderation became to heavy) is here we can make our own groups..

@hippydog Exactly. When it happens, the party it happens to can always make their own group.

@bingst lets be honest.. its not that simple.. starting your own group of one person is really not that fun.. it is a sad popularity contest.. but so is life.. im willing to at least watch the interesting shenanigans go down .. lol

"you are disrespecting and disparaging your members as whole with this decision, i,e, literally treating us MERE children "

I disagree.. this decision is more like treating us like adults, and allowing us to figure our own shit out 😈 ..
I am not "popular" on this site, but i also feel i havent made to many enemies either, so im not to worried.. lol

Interesting.. i see a lot of complaints happening, but i assume things will settle out with time.

Either that OR the entire Site will go down the sewers faster than a string of loose, sloppy turds.

@Triphid think of it as an interesting social experiment 😈

I welcome the probability of getting messages moved and/or banned.

This is why i suggested a count for how many have banned me. Otherwise how will i learn?

"Moderator & Group Creator Meetings" We talk about what hosts and mods do in groups.

We have chat hours in the evenings. And a more formal meeting Sunday evening.

Maybe some group owners want to get together and discuss the changes?

I've always based removing member content on Hate Speech and threats more than anything. Actual violoation of TOS of the site.

I've been here since Oct. 2017 and removed 4 comments in groups. So it's not something I'm apt to start doing now either. But if it's something bad enough that I thought Admin and SiteSupport were going to remove it later? It's going to warrant some thought.

I wouldn't mind bouncing ideas off other originators to see their thoughts on the topic? PM me or join the group if you are interested.

The heaviness or lightness of moderation is always a tradeoff. I have been on sites where it is too heavy (city-data atheism & agnosticism / religion forums) or too light (the now-defunct TheThinkingAtheist forums). Personally I liked the latter better than the former. On TTA, moderators evicted sock puppets and people trying to promote / sell things and people who did not debate fairly, but no one was ever evicted for an idea. The fascinating part of that, is that while for example you couldn't be booted for xenophobia or racism or homophobia, people arguing in favor of such things were generally incapable of avoiding ad hominem attacks, stalking, trolling, and other such behaviors, which got them booted anyway.

I am not sure why those pages went down or if they spun off someplace. People were rather more hot-headed there but I found it bracing and kind of miss it as one of my pit stops. It could have been more civil at times -- some users were gratuitously vulgar and frank -- but it's the one place I've been where I could take the time and effort to respond to something with full confidence that the thread wouldn't be shut down, moved, or removed -- or that I myself might be second-guessed based on some other member taking offense.

Until now, by my staying in the general fora, this place has at least approached that standard.

The problem with this direction your heading in, as I see it, is the moderation in each group is entirely up to the group owner so you have no idea what you're getting into if you post there. Presumably there will be a sticky post with group rules but it might be badly written, dated or disingenuous. The owner can be a decent human, or someone with thin skin and sharp elbows. In short, each group is its own "brand".

Do you really want to cede your brand to the group owners?

Seems to me you could have some overall community standards to which group owners agree to be accountable as a condition of being allowed to use the platform. Otherwise it'll just devolve into the Wild, Wild West. And that way users have some recourse if a group owner doesn't meet at least those minimum standards, plus, the Agnostic/Humanist.com brands are not diluted or sullied. Like it or not, if a group owner is an asshat, some of that asshattery transfers onto the site owners because you tolerate it, tacitly or otherwise.

You have chosen to create a social media platform, so it seems to me that this quest to get yourself off the hook for any moderation or even indirect meta-moderation, demonstrates a failure to understand what you've gotten yourself into. I don't think you can completely evade some police work.

Fair enough.

Good luck with that. You have have a lot more faith in human nature than I do. Same thing with feeling you can trust all the group moderators to be fair with all members. Now watch everybody feel they have to walk on eggshells instead of being honest or outspoken. It was nice while it lasted....The mutual understanding is that the mods have all the power and the other members must toe the line, that's the only thing mutual, certainly not the power situation. If someone gets treated badly by a mod they will have to leave the group and start a competing group on that topic. We already have too many groups, but it will get even worse.....But at least general forum is back, so people can post and comment there without any tyranny of group mods there. Thanks for that....

Just be respectful, follow the rules and you should be fine.

@GuyKeith That would be nice if the rules in each group were clearly spelled out and enforced fairly and consistently, but that's often not the case, Keith. Like most things in life, it often comes down to personalities and favoritism over what is actually in the rules. Like in most of my jobs I've had. Where the boss had all the power and the only power I had was to quit. So glad I'm retired and finally free of all that.
